NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The Israelites then al turned out and, as one man, the entire community from Dan to Beersheba, including Gilead, assembled in Yahweh's presence at Mizpah.1 Egressi sunt itaque omnes fi lii Israel et pariter congrega ti, quasi vir unus, de Dan usque Bersabee et terra Galaad ad Dominum in Maspha.
The leaders of the entire people, of al the tribes of Israel, were present at this assembly of God'speople, four hundred thousand trained infantry.2 Omnisque populi anguli et cunctae tribus Israel in ecclesiam populi Dei convenerunt: quadringenta milia peditum pugnatorum.
The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites then said, 'Tel ushow this crime was committed.'3 Nec latuit filios Beniamin, quod ascendissent filii Israel in Maspha. Interrogatusque Levita maritus mulieris interfectae quo modo tantum scelus perpetratum esset,
The Levite, husband of the murdered woman, spoke in reply and said,4 respondit: “ Veni in Gabaa Beniamin cum uxore mea illucque diverti.
'The men of Gibeah ganged up against me and, during the night, surrounded the house where I waslodging. They intended to murder me. They raped my concubine to death.5 Et ecce homines civitatis illius circumdederunt nocte domum, in qua manebam, volentes me occidere et uxorem meam incredibili libidinis furore vexantes; denique mortua est.
I then took my concubine, cut her up and sent her throughout the entire territory of the heritage ofIsrael, since these men had committed a shameful act, an infamy, in Israel.6 Quam arreptam in frusta concidi misique partes in omnes terminos possessionis Israel, quia fecerunt nefas et piaculum in Israel.
Now, all you Israelites, discuss the matter and give your decision here and now.'7 Adestis omnes, filii Israel: decernite quid facere debeatis ”.
The whole people stood up as one man and said, 'None of us wil go home, none of us will go back tohis house!8 Stansque omnis populus quasi unius hominis sermone respondit: “ Non recedemus in tabernacula nostra, nec suam quisquam intrabit domum,
And this is what we are now going to do to Gibeah. We shal draw lots9 sed hoc contra Gabaa in commune faciemus secundum sortem:
and, throughout the tribes of Israel, select ten men out of a hundred, a hundred out of a thousand anda thousand out of ten thousand to col ect food for the people, so that, on their arrival, the latter may treat Gibeahin Benjamin as this infamy perpetrated in Israel deserves.'10 decem viri eligantur e centum ex omnibus tribubus Israel et centum de mille et mille de decem milibus, ut comportent exercitui cibaria illis, qui venerunt, ut reddant Gabaa Beniamin pro scelere, quod meretur ”.
Thus, as one man, al the men of Israel mustered against the town.11 Convenitque universus Israel ad civitatem quasi unus homo, eadem mente unoque consilio,
The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, 'What is this crimewhich has been committed in your territory?12 et miserunt nuntios ad omnem tribum Beniamin, qui dicerent: “ Quale nefas in vobis repertum est!
Now, give up these men, these scoundrels, living in Gibeah, so that we can put them to death andwipe out this evil from Israel.' The Benjaminites, however, would not listen to their brother Israelites.13 Tradite homines filios Belial in Gabaa, qui hoc flagitium perpetrarunt, ut moriantur, et auferatur malum de Israel ”.
Qui noluerunt fratrum suorum filiorum Israel audire mandatum,
The Benjaminites left their towns and mustered at Gibeah to fight the Israelites.14 sed ex cunctis urbibus, quae suae sortis erant, convenerunt in Gabaa, ut illis ferrent auxilium et contra universum Israel populum dimicarent.
At the time, a count was made of the Benjaminites from the various towns: there were twenty-sixthousand swordsmen; and the count excluded the inhabitants of Gibeah.15 Recensitique sunt in die illa viginti sex milia de civitatibus Beniamin educentium gladium, praeter habitatores Gabaa, qui septingenti erant viri fortissimi.
In this great army there were seven hundred first-rate left-handers, every man of whom could sling astone at a hair and not miss it.16 In universo hoc populo erant septingenti viri electi, qui sinistra pro dextra utebantur et sic fundis lapides ad certum iaciebant, ut capillum quoque possent percutere, et nequaquam in alteram partem ictus lapidis deferretur.
A count was also held of the men of Israel, excluding Benjamin: there were four hundred thousandmen, al experienced swordsmen.17 Virorum quoque Israel, absque filiis Beniamin, recensita sunt quadringenta milia educentium gladios et paratorum ad pugnam.
They moved off, up to Bethel, to consult God. The Israelites put the question, 'Which of us is to gofirst into battle against the Benjaminites?' And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to go first.'18 Qui surgentes venerunt in Bethel consulueruntque Deum atque dixerunt: “ Quis erit in exercitu nostro princeps certaminis contra filios Beniamin? ”. Quibus respondit Dominus: “ Iuda ascendet primus ”.
In the morning, the Israelites moved off and pitched their camp over against Gibeah.19 Statimque filii Israel surgentes mane castrametati sunt contra Gabaa;
The men of Israel advanced to do battle with Benjamin; they drew up their battle line in front ofGibeah.20 et inde procedentes ad pugnam contra Beniamin, contra urbem aciem direxerunt.
But the Benjaminites sal ied out from Gibeah and that day massacred twenty-two thousand Israelites.21 Egressique filii Beniamin de Gabaa occiderunt de filiis Israel die illo viginti duo milia viros.
The army of the men of Israel then took fresh heart and again drew up their battle line in the sameplace as the day before.22 Rursum filii Israel confortati in eodem loco, in quo prius certaverant, aciem direxerunt,
The Israelites went and wept before Yahweh until evening; they then consulted Yahweh; they asked,'Shal we join battle again with the sons of our brother Benjamin?' Yahweh replied, 'March against him!'23 ita tamen ut prius ascenderent et flerent coram Domino usque ad noctem consulerentque eum et dicerent: “ Debeo ultra procedere ad dimicandum contra filios Beniamin fratres meos, an non? ”. Quibus ille respondit: “ Ascendite ad eos ”.
This second day, the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites,24 Cumque filii Israel altero die contra filios Beniamin ad proelium processissent,
and, this second day, Benjamin sallied out from Gibeah to meet them and massacred anothereighteen thousand Israelites, al experienced swordsmen.25 eruperunt filii Beniamin de Gabaa et occurrentes eis iterum decem et octo milia virorum educentium gladium prostraverunt.
Then al the Israelites and the whole people went off to Bethel; they wept and sat in Yahweh'spresence; they fasted all day till the evening and presented burnt offerings and communion sacrifices beforeYahweh.26 Quam ob rem omnes filii Israel, universus populus, venerunt in Bethel et sedentes flebant coram Domino ieiunaveruntque die illo usque ad vesperam et obtulerunt ei holocausta et pacificas victimas
The Israelites then consulted Yahweh. In those days, the ark of the covenant of God was there,27 et super statu suo interrogaverunt. Eo tempore ibi erat arca foederis Dei,
and Phinehas son of Eleazer, son of Aaron was its minister at the time. They said, 'Ought I to go intobattle against the sons of my brother Benjamin again, or should I stop?' Yahweh replied, 'March! For tomorrow Ishall deliver him into your hands.'28 et Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron stabat coram eo. Consuluerunt igitur Dominum atque dixerunt: “ Exire ultra debemus ad pugnam contra filios Beniamin fratres nostros, an quiescere? ”. Quibus ait Dominus: “ Ascendite, cras enim tradam eos in manus vestras ”.
Israel then positioned troops in ambush al round Gibeah.29 Posueruntque filii Israel insidias per circuitum urbis Gabaa
On the third day the Israelites marched against the Benjaminites and, as before, drew up their line infront of Gibeah.30 et tertia vice sicut semel et bis contra Beniamin et Gabaa exercitum produxerunt.
The Benjaminites sal ied out to engage the people and let themselves be drawn away from the town.As before, they began by kil ing those of the people who were on the roads, one of which runs up to Bethel, andthe other to Gibeah through open country: some thirty men of Israel.31 Sed et filii Beniamin eruperunt in occursum populi et abstracti de civitate coeperunt caedere ex eis sicut primo et secundo die, per duas semitas terga vertentes, quarum una ferebat in Bethel, altera in Gabaa, atque prosternere in campo triginta circiter viros.
The Benjaminites thought, 'We have beaten them, as we did the first time,' but the Israelites haddecided, 'We shal run away and draw them away from the town along the roads.'32 Putaverunt enim solito eos more percussos cedere; qui fugam simulaverunt, ut abstraherent eos de civitate et quasi fugientes ad supradictas semitas perducerent.
All the Israelites then retreated and reformed at Baal-Tamar, while the Israelite troops in ambushsurged from their positions to the west of Gibeah.33 Omnes itaque viri Israel surgentes de sedibus suis tetenderunt aciem in loco, qui vocatur Baalthamar. Insidiae quoque eruperunt de loco suo, de regione in occidente Gabaa.
Ten thousand picked men, chosen from the whole of Israel, launched their attack on Gibeah. Thebattle was fierce; and the others knew nothing of the disaster impending.34 Venerunt ergo adversus Gabaa decem milia virorum electorum de universo Israel. Ingravatumque est bellum contra filios Beniamin, et non intellexerunt quod ex omni parte illis instaret interitus.
Yahweh defeated Benjamin before Israel and that day the Israelites kil ed twenty-five thousand onehundred men of Benjamin, al of them trained swordsmen.35 Percussitque eos Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israel, et interfecerunt ex eis in illo die viginti quinque milia et centum viros, omnes bellatores et educentes gladium.
The Benjaminites saw that they were beaten. The Israelites had given ground to Benjamin, since theywere relying on the ambush which they had positioned close to Gibeah.36 Filii autem Beniamin, cum se inferiores esse vidissent, coeperunt fugere. Quod cernentes filii Israel, dederunt eis ad fugiendum locum, quia confidebant in insidiis, quas iuxta urbem posuerant.
The troops in ambush threw themselves against Gibeah at top speed; fanning out, they put the wholetown to the sword.37 Qui cum repente de latibulis surrexissent, irruerunt super Gabaa et ingressi celeriter percusserunt totam civitatem in ore gladii.
Now it had been agreed between the Israelites and those of the ambush that the latter should raise asmoke signal from the town,38 Signum autem dederant filii Israel his, quos in insidiis collocaverant, ut ignem accenderent et, ascendente in altum fumo, captam urbem demonstrarent.
whereupon the Israelites in the thick of the battle would turn about. Benjamin began by kil ing some ofthe Israelites, about thirty men, and thought, 'We have certainly beaten them, as we did in the first battle.'39 Verterant ergo terga filii Israel in ipso certamine positi, et filii Beniamin putantes quod percussissent eos sicut in priore pugna, coeperant de exercitu eorum caedere triginta fere viros.
But the signal, a column of smoke, began to rise from the town, and the Benjaminites looking backsaw the whole town going up in flames to the sky.40 Cum autem columna fumi de civitate conscendere coepisset, et Beniamin quoque retro aspiciens cerneret de civitate flammas in sublime ferri,
The Israelites then turned about, and the Benjaminites were seized with terror, for they saw thatdisaster had struck them.41 cumque vir Israel versa facie aggrederetur, vir Beniamin conturbatus est, quia vidit se apprehensum a malo.
They broke before the Israelite onslaught and made for the desert, but the fighters pressed themhard, while the others coming out of the town took and slaughtered them from the rear.42 Et ad viam deserti ire coeperunt, illuc quoque eos adversariis persequentibus.
Of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men fel , al of them brave men.44 Fuerunt autem, qui interfecti sunt de Beniamin, decem et octo milia virorum omnes robustissimi pugnatores.
They then turned tail and fled into the desert, towards the Rock of Rimmon. Five thousand of themwere picked off on the roads, and the rest were relentlessly pursued as far as Gideon, two thousand of thembeing kil ed.45 Qui remanserant, fugerunt in solitudinem et pergebant ad petram, cuius vocabulum est Remmon. Quasi racemos colligentes occiderunt in viis quinque milia viros. Et cum instantius eos persequerentur usque Gadaam, interfecerunt etiam alios duo milia.
The total number of Benjaminites who fel that day was twenty-five thousand swordsmen, al of thembrave men.46 Et sic factum est ut omnes, qui ceciderant de Beniamin in die illa, essent viginti quinque milia pugnatores ad bella promptissimi.
Six hundred men, however, turned tail and escaped into the desert, to the Rock of Rimmon, andthere they stayed for four months.47 Remanserunt itaque, qui evadere potuerant et fugere in solitudinem, sescenti viri; sederuntque in petra Remmon mensibus quattuor.
The men of Israel then went back to the Benjaminites, and put them to the sword-people, livestockand everything else that came their way in the town. And they fired all the towns involved.48 Regressi autem filii Israel ex civitatibus a viris usque ad iumenta, usque ad omne, quod inveniri poterat, gladio percusserunt, cunctasque urbes et viculos Beniamin vorax flamma consumpsit.
