NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
It is for you, then, to preach the behaviour which goes with healthy doctrine.1 Tu autem loquere quæ decent sanam doctrinam :
Older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love and perseverance.2 senes ut sobrii sint, pudici, prudentes, sani in fide, in dilectione, in patientia :
Similarly, older women should behave as befits religious people, with no scandal-mongering and noaddiction to wine -- they must be the teachers of right behaviour3 anus similiter in habitu sancto, non criminatrices, non multo vino servientes, bene docentes :
and show younger women how they should love their husbands and love their children,4 ut prudentiam doceant adolescentulas, ut viros suos ament, filios suos diligant,
how they must be sensible and chaste, and how to work in their homes, and be gentle, and obey theirhusbands, so that the message of God is not disgraced.5 prudentes, castas, sobrias, domus curam habentes, benignas, subditas viris suis, ut non blasphemetur verbum Dei.
Similarly, urge younger men to be moderate in everything that they do,6 Juvenes similiter hortare ut sobrii sint.
and you yourself set an example of good works, by sincerity and earnestness, when you are teaching, and by a message sound and irreproachable7 In omnibus teipsum præbe exemplum bonorum operum, in doctrina, in integritate, in gravitate,
so that any opponent will be at a loss, with no accusation to make against us.8 verbum sanum, irreprehensibile : ut is qui ex adverso est, vereatur, nihil habens malum dicere de nobis.
Slaves must be obedient to their masters in everything, and do what is wanted without argument;9 Servos dominis suis subditos esse, in omnibus placentes, non contradicentes,
and there must be no pilfering -- they must show complete honesty at al times, so that they are in everyway a credit to the teaching of God our Saviour.10 non fraudantes, sed in omnibus fidem bonam ostendentes : ut doctrinam Salvatoris nostri Dei ornent in omnibus.
You see, God's grace has been revealed to save the whole human race;11 Apparuit enim gratia Dei Salvatoris nostri omnibus hominibus,
it has taught us that we should give up everything contrary to true religion and all our worldly passions;we must be self-restrained and live upright and religious lives in this present world,12 erudiens nos, ut abnegantes impietatem, et sæcularia desideria, sobrie, et juste, et pie vivamus in hoc sæculo,
waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the appearing of the glory of our great God andSaviour Christ Jesus.13 exspectantes beatam spem, et adventum gloriæ magni Dei, et Salvatoris nostri Jesu Christi :
He offered himself for us in order to ransom us from al our faults and to purify a people to be his veryown and eager to do good.14 qui dedit semetipsum pro nobis, ut nos redimeret ab omni iniquitate, et mundaret sibi populum acceptabilem, sectatorem bonorum operum.
This is what you must say, encouraging or arguing with ful authority; no one should despise you.15 Hæc loquere, et exhortare, et argue cum omni imperio. Nemo te contemnat.
