NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
It is for you, then, to preach the behaviour which goes with healthy doctrine.1 Tu autem loquere, quae decentsanam doctrinam.
Older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love and perseverance.2 Senes, ut sobrii sint, pudici, prudentes, sani fide, dilectione, patientia.
Similarly, older women should behave as befits religious people, with no scandal-mongering and noaddiction to wine -- they must be the teachers of right behaviour3 Anus similiter in habitu sanctae, non criminatrices, non vino multo deditae,bene docentes,
and show younger women how they should love their husbands and love their children,4 ut prudentiam doceant adulescentulas, ut viros suos ament,filios diligant,
how they must be sensible and chaste, and how to work in their homes, and be gentle, and obey theirhusbands, so that the message of God is not disgraced.5 prudentes sint, castae, domus curam habentes, benignae,subditae suis viris, ut non blasphemetur verbum Dei.
Similarly, urge younger men to be moderate in everything that they do,6 Iuvenes similiter hortare, ut sobrii sint.
and you yourself set an example of good works, by sincerity and earnestness, when you are teaching,and by a message sound and irreproachable7 In omnibus teipsum praebensexemplum bonorum operum, in doctrina integritatem, gravitatem,
so that any opponent will be at a loss, with no accusation to make against us.8 in verbo sanoirreprehensibilem, ut is, qui ex adverso est, vereatur, nihil habens malumdicere de nobis.
Slaves must be obedient to their masters in everything, and do what is wanted without argument;9 Servos dominis suis subditos esse in omnibus, placentes esse, noncontradicentes,
and there must be no pilfering -- they must show complete honesty at al times, so that they are in everyway a credit to the teaching of God our Saviour.10 non fraudantes, sed omnem fidem bonam ostendentes, utdoctrinam salutaris nostri Dei ornent in omnibus.
You see, God's grace has been revealed to save the whole human race;11 Apparuit enim gratia Dei salutaris omnibus hominibus
it has taught us that we should give up everything contrary to true religion and all our worldly passions;we must be self-restrained and live upright and religious lives in this present world,12 erudiens nos, utabnegantes impietatem et saecularia desideria sobrie et iuste et pie vivamus inhoc saeculo,
waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the appearing of the glory of our great God andSaviour Christ Jesus.13 exspectantes beatam spem et adventum gloriae magni Dei etsalvatoris nostri Iesu Christi;
He offered himself for us in order to ransom us from al our faults and to purify a people to be his veryown and eager to do good.14 qui dedit semetipsum pro nobis, ut nosredimeret ab omni iniquitate et mundaret sibi populum peculiarem, sectatorembonorum operum.
This is what you must say, encouraging or arguing with ful authority; no one should despise you.15 Haec loquere et exhortare et argue cum omni imperio. Nemo te contemnat!
