1 Al those under the yoke of slavery must have unqualified respect for their masters, so that the name ofGod and our teaching are not brought into disrepute.1 Quicumque sunt sub iugo, servi dominos suos omni honore di gnos arbitrentur, ne nomen Dei et doctrina blasphemetur.
2 Those whose masters are believers are not to respect them less because they are brothers; on thecontrary, they should serve them al the better, since those who have the benefit of their services are believersand dear to God. This is what you are to teach and urge.2 Qui autem fideles habent dominos, non contemnant, quia fratres sunt, sed magis serviant, quia fideles sunt et dilecti, qui beneficii participes sunt. Haec doce et exhortare.
3 Anyone who teaches anything different and does not keep to the sound teaching which is that of ourLord Jesus Christ, the doctrine which is in accordance with true religion,3 Si quis aliter docet et non accedit sanis sermonibus Domini nostri Iesu Christi et ei, quae secundum pietatem est, doctrinae,
4 is proud and has no understanding, but rather a weakness for questioning everything and arguing aboutwords. Al that can come of this is jealousy, contention, abuse and evil mistrust;4 superbus est, nihil sciens, sed languens circa quaestiones et pugnas verborum, ex quibus oriuntur invidiae, contentiones, blasphemiae, suspiciones malae,
5 and unending disputes by people who are depraved in mind and deprived of truth, and imagine thatreligion is a way of making a profit.5 conflictationes hominum mente corruptorum et qui veritate privati sunt, existimantium quaestum esse pietatem.
6 Religion, of course, does bring large profits, but only to those who are content with what they have.6 Est autem quaestus magnus pietas cum sufficientia.
7 We brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it;7 Nihil enim intulimus in mundum, quia nec auferre quid possumus;
8 but as long as we have food and clothing, we shal be content with that.8 habentes autem alimenta et quibus tegamur, his contenti erimus.
9 People who long to be rich are a prey to trial; they get trapped into all sorts of foolish and harmfulambitions which plunge people into ruin and destruction.9 Nam qui volunt divites fieri, incidunt in tentationem et laqueum et desideria multa stulta et nociva, quae mergunt homines in interitum et perditionem;
10 'The love of money is the root of all evils' and there are some who, pursuing it, have wandered awayfrom the faith and so given their souls any number of fatal wounds.10 radix enim omnium malorum est cupiditas, quam quidam appetentes erraverunt a fide et inseruerunt se doloribus multis.
11 But, as someone dedicated to God, avoid al that. You must aim to be upright and religious, fil ed withfaith and love, perseverance and gentleness.11 Tu autem, o homo Dei, haec fuge; sectare vero iustitiam, pietatem, fidem, caritatem, patientiam, mansuetudinem.
12 Fight the good fight of faith and win the eternal life to which you were cal ed and for which you madeyour noble profession of faith before many witnesses.12 Certa bonum certamen fidei, apprehende vitam aeternam, ad quam vocatus es, et confessus es bonam confessionem coram multis testibus.
13 Now, before God, the source of all life, and before Jesus Christ, who witnessed to his noble professionof faith before Pontius Pilate, I charge you13 Praecipio tibi coram Deo, qui vivificat omnia, et Christo Iesu, qui testimonium reddidit sub Pontio Pilato bonam confessionem,
14 to do al that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,14 ut serves mandatum sine macula irreprehensibile usque in adventum Domini nostri Iesu Christi,
15 who at the due time wil be revealed by God, the blessed and only Ruler of al , the King of kings andthe Lord of lords,15 quem suis temporibus ostendet beatus et solus potens, Rex regnantium et Dominus dominantium,
16 who alone is immortal, whose home is in inaccessible light, whom no human being has seen or is ableto see: to him be honour and everlasting power. Amen.16 qui solus habet immortalitatem, lucem habitans inaccessibilem, quem vidit nullus hominum nec videre potest; cui honor et imperium sempiternum. Amen.
17 Instruct those who are rich in this world's goods that they should not be proud and should set theirhopes not on money, which is untrustworthy, but on God who gives us richly al that we need for our happiness.17 Divitibus huius saeculi praecipe non superbe sapere neque sperare in incerto divitiarum sed in Deo, qui praestat nobis omnia abunde ad fruendum,
18 They are to do good and be rich in good works, generous in giving and always ready to share-18 bene agere, divites fieri in operibus bonis, facile tribuere, communicare,
19 this is the way they can amass a good capital sum for the future if they want to possess the only lifethat is real.19 thesaurizare sibi fundamentum bonum in futurum, ut apprehendant veram vitam.
20 My dear Timothy, take great care of al that has been entrusted to you. Turn away from godlessphilosophical discussions and the contradictions of the 'knowledge' which is not knowledge at al ;20 O Timothee, depositum custodi, devitans profanas vocum novitates et oppositiones falsi nominis scientiae,
21 by adopting this, some have missed the goal of faith. Grace be with you.21 quam quidam profitentes circa fidem aberraverunt.
