NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
Al those under the yoke of slavery must have unqualified respect for their masters, so that the name ofGod and our teaching are not brought into disrepute.1 Οσοι ειναι υπο ζυγον δουλειας, ας νομιζωσι τους κυριους αυτων αξιους πασης τιμης, δια να μη βλασφημηται το ονομα του Θεου και η διδασκαλια.
Those whose masters are believers are not to respect them less because they are brothers; on thecontrary, they should serve them al the better, since those who have the benefit of their services are believersand dear to God. This is what you are to teach and urge.2 Οι δε εχοντες πιστους κυριους ας μη καταφρονωσιν αυτους, διοτι ειναι αδελφοι, αλλα προθυμοτερον ας δουλευωσι, διοτι ειναι πιστοι και αγαπητοι οι απολαμβανοντες την ευεργεσιαν. Ταυτα διδασκε και νουθετει.
Anyone who teaches anything different and does not keep to the sound teaching which is that of ourLord Jesus Christ, the doctrine which is in accordance with true religion,3 Εαν τις ετεροδιδασκαλη και δεν ακολουθη τους υγιαινοντας λογους του Κυριου ημων Ιησου Χριστου και την διδασκαλιαν την κατ' ευσεβειαν,
is proud and has no understanding, but rather a weakness for questioning everything and arguing aboutwords. Al that can come of this is jealousy, contention, abuse and evil mistrust;4 ειναι τετυφωμενος και δεν εξευρει ουδεν, αλλα νοσει περι συζητησεις και λογομαχιας, εκ των οποιων προερχεται φθονος, ερις, βλασφημιαι, υπονοιαι πονηραι,
and unending disputes by people who are depraved in mind and deprived of truth, and imagine thatreligion is a way of making a profit.5 ματαιαι συνδιαλεξεις ανθρωπων διεφθαρμενων τον νουν και απεστερημενων της αληθειας, νομιζοντων την ευσεβειαν οτι ειναι πλουτισμος. Απομακρυνου απο των τοιουτων.
Religion, of course, does bring large profits, but only to those who are content with what they have.6 Μεγας δε πλουτισμος ειναι η ευσεβεια μετα αυταρκειας.
We brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it;7 Διοτι δεν εφεραμεν ουδεν εις τον κοσμον, φανερον οτι ουδε δυναμεθα να εκφερωμεν τι?
but as long as we have food and clothing, we shal be content with that.8 εχοντες δε διατροφας και σκεπασματα, ας αρκωμεθα εις ταυτα.
People who long to be rich are a prey to trial; they get trapped into all sorts of foolish and harmfulambitions which plunge people into ruin and destruction.9 Οσοι δε θελουσι να πλουτωσι πιπτουσιν εις πειρασμον και παγιδα και εις επιθυμιας πολλας ανοητους και βλαβερας, αιτινες βυθιζουσι τους ανθρωπους εις ολεθρον και απωλειαν.
'The love of money is the root of all evils' and there are some who, pursuing it, have wandered awayfrom the faith and so given their souls any number of fatal wounds.10 Διοτι ριζα παντων των κακων ειναι η φιλαργυρια, την οποιαν τινες ορεγομενοι απεπλανηθησαν απο της πιστεως και διεπερασαν εαυτους με οδυνας πολλας.
But, as someone dedicated to God, avoid al that. You must aim to be upright and religious, fil ed withfaith and love, perseverance and gentleness.11 Συ ομως, ω ανθρωπε του Θεου, ταυτα φευγε? ζητει δε δικαιοσυνην, ευσεβειαν, πιστιν, αγαπην, υπομονην, πραοτητα.
Fight the good fight of faith and win the eternal life to which you were cal ed and for which you madeyour noble profession of faith before many witnesses.12 Αγωνιζου τον καλον αγωνα της πιστεως? κρατει την αιωνιον ζωην, εις την οποιαν και προσεκληθης και ωμολογησας την καλην ομολογιαν ενωπιον πολλων μαρτυρων.
Now, before God, the source of all life, and before Jesus Christ, who witnessed to his noble professionof faith before Pontius Pilate, I charge you13 Σε παραγγελλω ενωπιον του Θεου του ζωοποιουντος τα παντα και του Ιησου Χριστου του μαρτυρησαντος ενωπιον του Ποντιου Πιλατου την καλην ομολογιαν,
to do al that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,14 να φυλαξης την εντολην αμολυντον, αμεμπτον, μεχρι της επιφανειας του Κυριου ημων Ιησου Χριστου,
who at the due time wil be revealed by God, the blessed and only Ruler of al , the King of kings andthe Lord of lords,15 την οποιαν εν τοις ωρισμενοις καιροις θελει δειξει ο μακαριος και μονος Δεσποτης, ο Βασιλευς των βασιλευοντων, και Κυριος των κυριευοντων,
who alone is immortal, whose home is in inaccessible light, whom no human being has seen or is ableto see: to him be honour and everlasting power.
Instruct those who are rich in this world's goods that they should not be proud and should set theirhopes not on money, which is untrustworthy, but on God who gives us richly al that we need for our happiness.17 Εις τους πλουσιους του κοσμου τουτου παραγγελλε να μη υψηλοφρονωσι, μηδε να ελπιζωσιν επι την αδηλοτητα του πλουτου, αλλ' επι τον Θεον τον ζωντα, οστις διδει εις ημας πλουσιως παντα εις απολαυσιν,
They are to do good and be rich in good works, generous in giving and always ready to share-18 να αγαθοεργωσι, να πλουτωσιν εις εργα καλα, να ηναι ευμεταδοτοι, κοινωνικοι,
this is the way they can amass a good capital sum for the future if they want to possess the only lifethat is real.19 θησαυριζοντες εις εαυτους θεμελιον καλον εις το μελλον, δια να απολαυσωσι την αιωνιον ζωην.
My dear Timothy, take great care of al that has been entrusted to you. Turn away from godlessphilosophical discussions and the contradictions of the 'knowledge' which is not knowledge at al ;20 Ω Τιμοθεε, την παρακαταθηκην φυλαξον, αποστρεφομενος τας βεβηλους ματαιολογιας και τας αντιλογιας της ψευδωνυμου γνωσεως,
by adopting this, some have missed the goal of faith. Grace be with you.21 την οποιαν τινες επαγγελλομενοι επλανηθησαν κατα την πιστιν. Η χαρις ειη μετα σου? αμην.
