NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 So if in Christ there is anything that will move you, any incentive in love, any fel owship in the Spirit, anywarmth or sympathy -- I appeal to you,1 Si qua ergo consolatio in Christo, si quod solacium cari tatis, si quacommunio spiritus, si quae viscera et miserationes,
2 make my joy complete by being of a single mind, one in love, one in heart and one in mind.2 implete gaudium meum, utidem sapiatis, eandem caritatem habentes, unanimes, id ipsum sapientes;
3 Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead, out of humility of mind everyone should givepreference to others,3 nihilper contentionem neque per inanem gloriam, sed in humilitate superiores sibiinvicem arbitrantes;
4 everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others.4 non, quae sua sunt, singuli considerantes, sed et ea,quae aliorum.
5 Make your own the mind of Christ Jesus:5 Hoc sentite in vobis, quod et in Christo Iesu:
6 Who, being in the form of God, did not count equality with God something to be grasped.6 qui cum in forma Dei esset,
non rapinam arbitratus est esse se aequalem Deo,
7 But he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, becoming as human beings are; and being in everyway like a human being,7 sed semetipsum exinanivit formam servi accipiens,
in similitudinem hominum factus;
et habitu inventus ut homo,
8 he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross.8 humiliavit semetipsum factus oboediens usque ad mortem,
mortem autem crucis.
9 And for this God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above al other names;9 Propter quod et Deus illum exaltavit
et donavit illi nomen,
quod est super omne nomen,
10 so that al beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name ofJesus10 ut in nomine Iesu omne genu flectatur
caelestium et terrestrium et infernorum,
11 and that every tongue should acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.11 et omnis lingua confiteatur
“ Dominus Iesus Christus! ”,
in gloriam Dei Patris.
12 So, my dear friends, you have always been obedient; your obedience must not be limited to timeswhen I am present. Now that I am absent it must be more in evidence, so work out your salvation in fear andtrembling.12 Itaque, carissimi mei, sicut semper oboedistis, non ut in praesentia meitantum sed multo magis nunc in absentia mea, cum metu et tremore vestram salutemoperamini;
13 It is God who, for his own generous purpose, gives you the intention and the powers to act.13 Deus est enim, qui operatur in vobis et velle et perficere pro suobeneplacito.
14 Let your behaviour be free of murmuring and complaining14 Omnia facite sine murmurationibus et haesitationibus,
15 so that you remain faultless and pure, unspoilt children of God surrounded by a deceitful andunderhand brood, shining out among them like bright stars in the world,15 utefficiamini sine querela et simplices, filii Dei sine reprehensione in mediogenerationis pravae et perversae, inter quos lucetis sicut luminaria in mundo,
16 proffering to it the Word of life. Then I shall have reason to be proud on the Day of Christ, for it wil notbe for nothing that I have run the race and toiled so hard.16 verbum vitae firmiter tenentes ad gloriam meam in die Christi, quia non invacuum cucurri neque in vacuum laboravi.
17 Indeed, even if my blood has to be poured as a libation over your sacrifice and the offering of yourfaith, then I shal be glad and join in your rejoicing-17 Sed et si delibor supra sacrificiumet obsequium fidei vestrae, gaudeo et congaudeo omnibus vobis;
18 and in the same way, you must be glad and join in my rejoicing.18 idipsum autemet vos gaudete et congaudete mihi.
19 I hope, in the Lord Jesus, to send Timothy to you soon, so that my mind may be set at rest when I hearhow you are.19 Spero autem in Domino Iesu Timotheum citome mittere ad vos, ut et ego bono animo sim, cognitis, quae circa vos sunt.
20 There is nobody else that I can send who is like him and cares as sincerely for your well-being;20 Neminem enim habeo tam unanimem, qui sincere pro vobis sollicitus sit;
21 they al want to work for themselves, not for Jesus Christ.21 omnesenim sua quaerunt, non quae sunt Iesu Christi.
22 But you know what sort of person he has proved himself, working with me for the sake of the gospellike a son with his father.22 Probationem autem eiuscognoscitis, quoniam sicut patri filius mecum servivit in evangelium.
23 That is the man, then, that I am hoping to send to you immediately I can make out what is going tohappen to me;23 Huncigitur spero me mittere, mox ut videro, quae circa me sunt;
24 but I am confident in the Lord that I shal come myself, too, before long.24 confido autem inDomino, quoniam et ipse cito veniam.
25 Nevertheless I thought it essential to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fel ow-worker andcompanion-in-arms since he came as your representative to look after my needs;25 Necessarium autem existimavi Epaphroditum fratrem et cooperatorem etcommilitonem meum, vestrum autem apostolum et ministrum necessitatis meae,mittere ad vos,
26 because he was missing you al and was worrying because you had heard that he was il .26 quoniam omnes vos desiderabat et maestus erat, propterea quodaudieratis illum infirmatum.
27 Indeed he was seriously il and nearly died; but God took pity on him -- and not only on him but also onme, to spare me one grief on top of another.27 Nam et infirmatus est usque ad mortem, sed Deusmisertus est eius; non solum autem eius, verum et mei, ne tristitiam supertristitiam haberem.
28 So I am sending him back as promptly as I can so that you wil have the joy of seeing him again, andthat wil be some comfort to me in my distress.28 Festinantius ergo misi illum, ut, viso eo, iterumgaudeatis, et ego sine tristitia sim.
29 Welcome him in the Lord, then, with al joy; hold people like him in honour,29 Excipite itaque illum in Domino cumomni gaudio et eiusmodi cum honore habetote,
30 because it was for Christ's work that he came so near to dying, risking his life to do the duty to mewhich you could not do yourselves.30 quoniam propter opus Christiusque ad mortem accessit in interitum tradens animam suam, ut suppleret id, quodvobis deerat ministerii erga me.
