NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you, immorality of a kind that is not foundeven among gentiles: that one of you is living with his stepmother.1 Omnino auditur inter vos for nicatio, et talis fornicatio qualis necinter gentes, ita ut uxorem patris aliquis habeat.
And you so fil ed with your own self-importance! It would have been better if you had been grievingbitterly, so that the man who has done this thing were turned out of the community.2 Et vos inflati estis et nonmagis luctum habuistis, ut tollatur de medio vestrum, qui hoc opus fecit?
For my part, however distant I am physical y, I am present in spirit and have already condemned theman who behaved in this way, just as though I were present in person.3 Egoquidem absens corpore, praesens autem spiritu, iam iudicavi ut praesens eum, quisic operatus est,
When you have gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, with the presence of my spirit, and inthe power of our Lord Jesus,4 in nomine Domini nostri Iesu, congregatis vobis et meospiritu cum virtute Domini nostri Iesu,
hand such a man over to Satan, to be destroyed as far as natural life is concerned, so that on the Dayof the Lord his spirit may be saved.5 tradere huiusmodi Satanae in interitumcarnis, ut spiritus salvus sit in die Domini.
Your self-satisfaction is il founded. Do you not realise that only a little yeast leavens the whole batch ofdough?6 Non bona gloriatio vestra. Nescitis quia modicum fermentum totam massamcorrumpit?
Throw out the old yeast so that you can be the fresh dough, unleavened as you are. For our Passoverhas been sacrificed, that is, Christ;7 Expurgate vetus fermentum, ut sitis nova consparsio, sicut estisazymi. Etenim Pascha nostrum immolatus est Christus!
let us keep the feast, then, with none of the old yeast and no leavening of evil and wickedness, but onlythe unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.8 Itaque festa celebremus, non in fermento veteri neque in fermento malitiae et nequitiae, sed in azymissinceritatis et veritatis.
In my letter, I wrote to you that you should have nothing to do with people living immoral lives.9 Scripsi vobis in epistula: Ne commisceamini fornicariis.
I was not including everybody in this present world who is sexually immoral, or everybody who isgreedy, or dishonest or worships false gods -- that would mean you would have to cut yourselves off completelyfrom the world.10 Non utiquefornicariis huius mundi aut avaris aut rapacibus aut idolis servientibus, alioquin debueratis de hoc mundo exisse!
In fact what I meant was that you were not to have anything to do with anyone going by the name ofbrother who is sexual y immoral, or is greedy, or worships false gods, or is a slanderer or a drunkard ordishonest; never even have a meal with anybody of that kind.11 Nunc autem scripsi vobis noncommisceri, si is, qui frater nominatur, est fornicator aut avarus aut idolisserviens aut maledicus aut ebriosus aut rapax; cum eiusmodi nec cibum sumere.
It is no concern of mine to judge outsiders. It is for you to judge those who are inside, is it not?12 Quid enim mihi de his, qui foris sunt, iudicare? Nonne de his, qui intus sunt, vos iudicatis?
But outsiders are for God to judge. You must banish this evil-doer from among you.13 Nam eos, qui foris sunt, Deus iudicabit. Auferte malum exvobis ipsis!
