It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you, immorality of a kind that is not foundeven among gentiles: that one of you is living with his stepmother.1 שְׁמוּעָה נִשְׁמַעַת בָּאָרֶץ כִּי־נִמְצְאָה זְנוּת בֵּינֵיכֶם וְאַף־זְנוּת אֲשֶׁר בַּגּוֹיִם לֹא־סֻפַּר כָּמוֹהָ כִּי־יִקַּח אִישׁ אֶת־אֵשֶׁת אָבִיו
And you so fil ed with your own self-importance! It would have been better if you had been grievingbitterly, so that the man who has done this thing were turned out of the community.2 וְאַתֶּם עוֹד גְּבֹהֵי רוּחַ תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר הָיָה לָכֶם לְהִתְאַבֵּל לְמַעַן יוּסַר מִקִּרְבְּכֶם עֹשֵׂה הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַזֶּה
For my part, however distant I am physical y, I am present in spirit and have already condemned theman who behaved in this way, just as though I were present in person.3 הֵן אָנֹכִי הָרָחוֹק מִכֶּם בְּגוּפִי וְקָרוֹב בְּרוּחִי כְּבָר דַּנְתִּי כְּאִלּוּ הָיִיתִי אֶצְלְכֶם עַל־הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה כַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה
When you have gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, with the presence of my spirit, and inthe power of our Lord Jesus,4 בְּשֵׁם אֲדֹנֵינוּ יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ בְּהִקָּהֶלְכֶם יַחַד וְרוּחִי אִתְּכֶם עִם־גְּבוּרַת אֲדֹנֵינוּ יֵשׁוּעַ הַמָּשִׁיחַ
hand such a man over to Satan, to be destroyed as far as natural life is concerned, so that on the Dayof the Lord his spirit may be saved.5 לִמְסֹר אֶת־הָאִישׁ הַהוּא לְשָׂטָן לְאָבְדַן הַבָּשָׂר לְמַעַן יִוָּשַׁע הָרוּחַ בְּיוֹם הָאָדוֹן יֵשׁוּעַ
Your self-satisfaction is il founded. Do you not realise that only a little yeast leavens the whole batch ofdough?6 לֹא־טוֹב הִתְהַלֶּלְכֶם הֲלֹא יְדַעְתֶּם כִּי מְעַט שְׂאֹר מְחַמֵּץ אֶת־כָּל־הָעִסָּה
Throw out the old yeast so that you can be the fresh dough, unleavened as you are. For our Passoverhas been sacrificed, that is, Christ;7 בַּעֲרוּ אֶת־הַשְּׂאוֹר הַיָּשָׁן לְמַעַן תִּהְיוּ עִסָּה חֲדָשָׁה הֲלֹא לֶחֶם מַצּוֹת אַתֶּם כִּי גַם־לָנוּ פִסְחֵנוּ הַנִּזְבָּח בַּעֲדֵנוּ הוּא הַמָּשִׁיחַ
let us keep the feast, then, with none of the old yeast and no leavening of evil and wickedness, but onlythe unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.8 עַל־כֵּן נָחֹגָּה־נָּא הֶחָג לֹא־בִשְׂאֹר יָשָׁן וְלֹא־בִשְׂאֹר הָרֹעַ וְהָרֶשַׁע כִּי אִם־בְּמַצּוֹת הַיּשֶׁר וְהָאֱמֶת
In my letter, I wrote to you that you should have nothing to do with people living immoral lives.9 כָּתַבְתִּי לָכֶם בָּאִגֶּרֶת שֶׁלֹּא תִתְעָרְבוּ עִם־הַזֹּנִים
I was not including everybody in this present world who is sexually immoral, or everybody who isgreedy, or dishonest or worships false gods -- that would mean you would have to cut yourselves off completelyfrom the world.10 וְאֵין־דַּעְתִּי בָזֹאת עַל־הַזֹּנִים שֶׁבָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה אוֹ עַל־בֹּצְעֵי בֶצַע וְגַזְלָנִים וְעֹבְדֵי אֱלִילִים כִּי אָז יִהְיֶה לָכֶם לָצֵאת מִן־הָעוֹלָם
In fact what I meant was that you were not to have anything to do with anyone going by the name ofbrother who is sexual y immoral, or is greedy, or worships false gods, or is a slanderer or a drunkard ordishonest; never even have a meal with anybody of that kind.11 אַךְ־זֹאת כָּתַבְתִּי לָכֶם לְבִלְתִּי הִתְעָרֵב עִם־אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־אָח יִקָּרֵא וְהוּא זֹנֶה אוֹ־בֹצֵעַ בֶּצַע אוֹ־עֹבֵד אֱלִילִים אוֹ מְגַדֵּף אוֹ סֹבֵא אוֹ גַזְלָן עִם־הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר כָּזֶה גַּם לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ
It is no concern of mine to judge outsiders. It is for you to judge those who are inside, is it not?12 כִּי מַה־לִּי לִשְׁפֹּט אֶת־אֲשֶׁר בַּחוּץ הֲלֹא תִשְׁפְּטוּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר בַּבָּיִת
But outsiders are for God to judge. You must banish this evil-doer from among you.13 וַאֲשֶׁר בַּחוּץ הָאֱלֹהִים יִשְׁפְּטֵם וְאַתֶּם תְּבַעֲרוּ אֶת־הָרָע מִקִּרְבְּכֶם
