Deuteronomy 28

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 'But if you faithful y obey the voice of Yahweh your God, by keeping and observing al hiscommandments, which I am laying down for you today, Yahweh your God wil raise you higher than every othernation in the world,	1 Sin audieris vocem Domini Dei tui, ut facias atque custo dias omnia mandata eius, quae ego praecipio tibi hodie, faciet te Dominus Deus tuus excelsiorem cunctis gentibus, quae versantur in terra,
2 and al these blessings wil befal and overtake you, for having obeyed the voice of Yahweh your God.	2 venientque super te universae benedictiones istae et apprehendent te, si tamen vocem Domini Dei tui audieris.
3 'You wil be blessed in the town and blessed in the countryside;	3 Benedictus tu in civitate et benedictus in agro.
4 blessed, the offspring of your body, the yield of your soil, the yield of your livestock, the young of yourcattle and the increase of your flocks;	4 Benedictus fructus ventris tui et fructus terrae tuae fructusque iumentorum tuorum, partus armentorum tuorum et incrementum ovium tuarum.
5 blessed, your basket and your kneading trough.	5 Benedictum canistrum et pistrinum tuum.
6 You wil be blessed in coming home, and blessed in going out.	6 Benedictus eris et ingrediens et egrediens.
7 The enemies who attack you, Yahweh wil defeat before your eyes; they wil advance on you from onedirection and flee from you in seven.	7 Dabit Dominus inimicos tuos, qui consurgunt adversum te, corruentes in conspectu tuo; per unam viam venient contra te et per septem fugient a facie tua.
8 Yahweh wil command blessedness to be with you, on your barns and on al your undertakings, andhe wil bless you in the country given you by Yahweh your God.	8 Emittet Dominus benedictionem super cellaria tua et super omnia opera manuum tuarum; benedicetque tibi in terra, quam Dominus Deus tuus dabit tibi.
9 'From you Yahweh wil make a people consecrated to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep thecommandments of Yahweh your God and fol ow his ways.	9 Suscitabit te Dominus sibi in populum sanctum, sicut iuravit tibi, si custodieris mandata Domini Dei tui et ambulaveris in viis eius.
10 The peoples of the world, seeing that you bear Yahweh's name, wil al be afraid of you.	10 Videbuntque omnes terrarum populi quod nomen Domini invocatum sit super te, et timebunt te.
11 Yahweh wil make you abound in possessions: in the offspring of your body, in the yield of your cattleand in the yield of your soil, in the country which he swore to your ancestors that he would give you.	11 Abundare te faciet Dominus omnibus bonis, fructu uteri tui et fructu iumentorum tuorum, fructu terrae tuae, quam iuravit Dominus patribus tuis, ut daret tibi.
12 For you Yahweh wil open his treasury of rain, the heavens, to give your country its rain at the righttime, and to bless al your labours. You wil make many nations your subjects, yet you wil be subject to none.	12 Aperiet Dominus tibi thesaurum suum optimum, caelum, ut tribuat pluviam terrae tuae in tempore suo; benedicatque cunctis operibus manuum tuarum; et fenerabis gentibus multis et ipse a nullo fenus accipies.
13 Yahweh wil put you at the head, not at the tail; you wil always be on top and never underneath, ifyou listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God, which I am laying down for you today, and then keepthem and put them into practice,	13 Constituet te Dominus in caput et non in caudam, et eris semper supra et non subter, si audieris mandata Domini Dei tui, quae ego praecipio tibi hodie, et custodieris et feceris
14 not deviating to right or to left from any of the words which I am laying down for you today, byfol owing other gods and serving them.	14 ac non declinaveris a verbis, quae ego praecipio vobis hodie, nec ad dexteram nec ad sinistram, nec secutus fueris deos alienos neque colueris eos.
15 'But if you do not obey the voice of Yahweh your God, and do not keep and observe all hiscommandments and laws which I am laying down for you today then all these curses wil befall and overtakeyou.	15 Quod si audire nolueris vocem Domini Dei tui, ut custodias et facias omnia mandata eius et praecepta, quae ego praecipio tibi hodie, venient super te omnes maledictiones istae et apprehendent te:
16 'You wil be accursed in the town and accursed in the countryside;	16 Maledictus eris in civitate, maledictus in agro.
17 accursed, your basket and your kneading trough;	17 Maledictum canistrum et pistrinum tuum.
18 accursed, the offspring of your body, the yield of your soil, the young of your cattle and the increaseof your flock.	18 Maledictus fructus ventris tui et fructus terrae tuae, partus armentorum tuorum et incrementum ovium tuarum.
19 You wil be accursed in coming home, and accursed in going out.	19 Maledictus eris ingrediens et maledictus egrediens.
20 'Yahweh wil send a curse on you, a spel , an imprecation on al your labours until you have beendestroyed and quickly perish, because of your perverse behaviour, for having deserted me.	20 Mittet Dominus super te maledictionem et conturbationem et increpationem in omnia opera tua, quae facies, donec conterat te et perdat velociter propter adinventiones tuas pessimas, in quibus reliquisti me.
21 Yahweh wil fasten the plague on you, until it has exterminated you from the country which you areabout to enter and make your own.	21 Adiunget Dominus tibi pestilentiam, donec consumat te de terra, ad quam ingredieris possidendam.
22 Yahweh wil strike you down with consumption, fever, inflammation, burning fever, drought, wind-blast, mildew, and these wil pursue you to your ruin.	22 Percutiet te Dominus consumptione, febri et inflammatione, ardore et aestu, uredine ac aurugine, et persequentur te, donec pereas.
23 The heavens above you wil be brass, the earth beneath you iron.	23 Et erit caelum, quod est supra caput tuum, aeneum, et terra, quam calcas, ferrea.
24 Your country's rain Yahweh wil turn into dust and sand; it will fal on you from the heavens until youperish.	24 Convertet Dominus imbrem terrae tuae in pulverem, et de caelo descendet super te cinis, donec conteraris.
25 Yahweh wil have you defeated by your enemies; you will advance on them from one direction andflee from them in seven; and you wil be a terrifying object-lesson to al the kingdoms of the world.	25 Tradet te Dominus corruentem ante hostes tuos: per unam viam egredieris contra eos et per septem fugies et eris in terrorem omnibus regnis terrae.
26 Your carcase will be carrion for al wild birds and al wild animals, with no one to scare them away.	26 Eritque cadaver tuum in escam cunctis volatilibus caeli et bestiis terrae, et non erit qui abigat.
27 'Yahweh wil strike you down with Egyptian ulcers, with swel ings in the groin, with scurvy and theitch, for which you wil find no cure.	27 Percutiet te Dominus ulcere Aegypti et tumore, scabie quoque et prurigine, ita ut curari nequeas.
28 Yahweh wil strike you down with madness, blindness, distraction of mind,	28 Percutiet te Dominus amentia et caecitate ac stupore mentis;
29 until you grope your way at noon like a blind man groping in the dark, and your steps will lead younowhere. 'You will never be anything but exploited and plundered, with no one to save you.	29 et palpabis in meridie, sicut palpare solet caecus in tenebris, et non diriges vias tuas. Omnique tempore eris oppressus et exspoliatus nec habebis, qui liberet te.
30 Get engaged to a woman, another man will have her; build a house, you wil not live in it; plant avineyard, you wil not gather its first-fruits.	30 Uxorem accipies, et alius dormiet cum ea. Domum aedificabis et non habitabis in ea. Plantabis vineam et non vindemiabis eam.
31 Your ox wil be slaughtered before your eyes and you will eat none of it; your donkey wil be carriedoff in front of you and not be returned to you; your sheep wil be given to your enemies, and no one will come toyour help.	31 Bos tuus mactabitur coram te, et non comedes ex eo. Asinus tuus rapietur in conspectu tuo et non reddetur tibi. Oves tuae dabuntur inimicis tuis, et non erit qui te adiuvet.
32 Your sons and daughters wil be handed over to another people, and every day you will wear youreyes out watching for them, while your hands are powerless.	32 Filii tui et filiae tuae tradentur alteri populo, videntibus oculis tuis et deficientibus ad conspectum eorum tota die, et non erit fortitudo in manu tua.
33 A nation hitherto unknown to you wil eat the yield of your soil and of all your hard work. You wilnever be anything but exploited and crushed.	33 Fructus terrae tuae et omnes labores tuos comedet populus, quem ignoras, et eris semper oppressus et confractus cunctis diebus
34 You wil be driven mad by the sights you wil see.	34 et insanies in aspectu eorum, quae videbunt oculi tui.
35 Yahweh wil strike you down with foul ulcers on knee and leg, for which you wil find no cure -- fromthe sole of your foot to the top of your head.	35 Percutiet te Dominus ulcere pessimo in genibus et in suris, sanarique non poteris a planta pedis usque ad verticem tuum.
36 'Yahweh wil send away both you and the king whom you have appointed to rule you to a nationunknown either to you or to your ancestors, and there you will serve other gods, made of wood and stone.	36 Ducet te Dominus et regem tuum, quem constitueris super te, in gentem, quam ignorasti tu et patres tui, et servies ibi diis alienis, ligno et lapidi;
37 And you wil be the astonishment, the byword, the laughing-stock of al the peoples where Yahweh istaking you.	37 et eris in stuporem et in proverbium ac fabulam omnibus populis, ad quos te introduxerit Dominus.
38 'You wil cast seed in plenty on the fields but harvest little, since the locust wil devour it.	38 Sementem multam iacies in terram et modicum congregabis, quia locustae devorabunt omnia.
39 You wil plant and till your vineyards but not drink the wine or gather the grapes, since the grub willeat them up.	39 Vineas plantabis et coles et vinum non bibes nec colliges ex ea quippiam, quoniam vastabitur vermibus.
40 You wil grow olive trees throughout your territory but not anoint yourself with the oil, since your olivetrees wil be cut down.	40 Olivas habebis in omnibus terminis tuis et non ungeris oleo, quia defluent et peribunt.
41 You wil father sons and daughters but they will not belong to you, since they wil go into captivity.	41 Filios generabis et filias et non frueris eis, quoniam ducentur in captivitatem.
42 Al your trees and the whole yield of your soil will be the prey of insects.	42 Omnes arbores tuas et fruges terrae tuae locusta consumet.
43 'The foreigners living with you wil rise higher and higher at your expense, while you yourself sinklower and lower.	43 Advena, qui tecum versatur in terra, ascendet super te eritque sublimior; tu autem descendes et eris inferior.
44 You wil be subject to them, not they to you; they wil be the ones at the head, and you the one at thetail.	44 Ipse fenerabit tibi, et tu non fenerabis ei; ipse erit in caput, et tu eris in caudam.
45 'Al these curses wil befal you, pursue you and overtake you until you have been destroyed, for nothaving obeyed the voice of Yahweh your God by keeping his commandments and laws which he has laid downfor you.	45 Et venient super te omnes maledictiones istae et persequentes apprehendent te, donec intereas, quia non audisti vocem Domini Dei tui nec servasti mandata eius et praecepta, quae praecepit tibi.
46 They wil be a sign and a wonder over you and your descendants for ever.	46 Et erunt in te signa atque prodigia et in semine tuo usque in sempiternum.
47 'For not having joyful y and with happy heart served Yahweh your God, despite the abundance ofeverything,	47 Eo quod non servieris Domino Deo tuo in gaudio cordisque laetitia propter rerum omnium abundantiam,
48 you will have to serve the enemy whom Yahweh wil send against you, in hunger, thirst, lack ofclothing and total privation. He will put an iron yoke on your neck, until he has destroyed you.	48 servies inimico tuo, quem immittet Dominus tibi, in fame et siti et nuditate et omnium penuria, et ponet iugum ferreum super cervicem tuam, donec te conterat.
49 'Against you Yahweh wil raise a distant nation from the ends of the earth like an eagle taking wing: anation whose language you do not understand,	49 Adducet Dominus super te gentem de longinquo et de extremis finibus terrae in similitudinem aquilae volantis cum impetu, cuius linguam intellegere non possis:
50 a nation grim of face, with neither respect for the old, nor pity for the young.	50 gentem procacissimam, quae non deferat seni nec misereatur parvulo;
51 He wil eat the yield of your cattle and the yield of your soil until you have been destroyed; he willleave you neither wheat, nor wine, nor oil, nor the young of your cattle, nor increase of your flock, until he hasmade an end of you.	51 et devoret fructum iumentorum tuorum ac fruges terrae tuae, donec intereas, et non relinquat tibi triticum, vinum et oleum, partum armentorum et incrementum ovium, donec te disperdat
52 He wil besiege you inside al your towns until your loftiest and most strongly fortified walls collapse,on which, throughout your country, you have relied. He wil besiege you inside al the towns throughout yourcountry, given you by Yahweh your God.	52 et obsideat te in cunctis urbibus tuis, donec destruantur muri tui firmi atque sublimes, in quibus habebas fiduciam in omni terra tua. Obsideberis intra portas tuas in omni terra tua, quam dabit tibi Dominus Deus tuus,
53 During the siege and in the distress to which your enemy wil reduce you, you wil eat the offspring ofyour own body, the flesh of the sons and daughters given you by Yahweh your God.	53 et comedes fructum uteri tui, carnes filiorum tuorum et filiarum tuarum, quas dederit tibi Dominus Deus tuus, in obsidione et angustia, qua opprimet te hostis tuus.
54 The gentlest and tenderest of your men wil scowl at his brother, and at the wife whom he embraces,and at his remaining children,	54 Homo tener in te et delicatus valde invidebit fratri suo et uxori, quae cubat in sinu suo, et residuis filiis suis, quos reservaverit,
55 not wil ing to give any of them any of his own children's flesh, which he is eating; because of thesiege and the distress to which your enemy wil reduce you in all your towns, he wil have nothing left.	55 ne det uni ex eis de carnibus filiorum suorum, quas comedet, eo quod nihil aliud habeat in obsidione et angustia, qua oppresserit te inimicus tuus intra omnes portas tuas.
56 The most refined and fastidious of your women, so refined, so fastidious that she has never venturedto set the sole of her foot to the ground, wil scowl at the husband whom she embraces, and at her son anddaughter, and at the after-birth when it leaves her womb, and at the child to which she has given birth-	56 Tenera mulier in te et delicata, quae non tentabat pedis vestigium figere in terram propter mollitiem et teneritudinem nimiam, invidebit viro suo, qui cubat in sinu eius, filio et filiae
57 she will hide away and eat them, so complete wil be the starvation resulting from the siege and thedistress to which your enemy wil reduce you in all your towns.	57 et illuviei secundarum, quae egrediuntur de medio feminum eius, et liberis, qui eadem hora nati sunt; comedet enim eos clam propter rerum omnium penuriam in obsidione et angustia, qua opprimet te inimicus tuus intra portas tuas.
58 'If you do not keep and observe al the words of this Law, which are written in this book, in the fear ofthis glorious and awe-inspiring name: Yahweh your God,	58 Nisi custodieris et feceris omnia verba legis huius, quae scripta sunt in hoc volumine, et timueris nomen gloriosum et terribile hoc, Dominum Deum tuum,
59 Yahweh wil strike you down with monstrous plagues, you and your descendants: with plaguesgrievous and lasting, diseases pernicious and enduring.	59 augebit ultra modum Dominus plagas tuas et plagas seminis tui, plagas magnas et perseverantes, infirmitates pessimas et perpetuas,
60 He wil afflict you with al the maladies of Egypt which you used to dread, and they wil fasten on you.	60 et convertet in te omnes afflictiones Aegypti, quas timuisti, et adhaerebunt tibi.
61 What is more, Yahweh wil afflict you with all the plagues and all the diseases not mentioned in thebook of this Law, until you have been destroyed.	61 Insuper universos languores et plagas, quae non sunt scriptae in volumine legis huius, inducet Dominus super te, donec te conterat;
62 There will only be a smal group of you left, you who were once as numerous as the stars of heaven.'For not having obeyed the voice of Yahweh your God,	62 et remanebitis pauci numero, qui prius eratis sicut astra caeli prae multitudine, quoniam non audisti vocem Domini Dei tui.
63 just as Yahweh used to delight in making you happy and in making your numbers grow, so wil hetake delight in ruining you and destroying you. You wil be torn from the country which you are about to enter andmake your own.	63 Et sicut ante laetatus est Dominus super vos bene vobis faciens vosque multiplicans, sic laetabitur super vos disperdens vos atque subvertens, ut auferamini de terra, ad quam ingredieris possidendam.
64 Yahweh wil scatter you throughout every people, from one end of the earth to the other; there youwil serve other gods made of wood and stone, hitherto unknown either to you or to your ancestors.	64 Disperget te Dominus in omnes populos a summitate terrae usque ad terminos eius, et servies ibi diis alienis, quos et tu ignorasti et patres tui, lignis et lapidibus.
65 Among these nations there wil be no repose for you, no rest for the sole of your foot; there Yahwehwil give you a quaking heart, weary eyes, halting breath.	65 In gentibus quoque illis non quiesces, neque erit requies vestigio pedis tui; dabit enim tibi Dominus ibi cor pavidum et deficientes oculos et animam consumptam maerore.
66 Your life ahead of you wil hang in doubt; you wil be afraid day and night, uncertain of your life.	66 Et erit vita tua quasi pendens ante te; timebis nocte et die et non credes vitae tuae.
67 In the morning you wil say, "How I wish it were evening!", and in the evening you will say, "How I wish it were morning!", such terror will grip your heart and such sights you wil see!	67 Mane dices: “Quis mihi det vesperum?”; et vespere: “Quis mihi det mane?”, propter cordis tui formidinem, qua terreberis, et propter ea, quae tuis videbis oculis.
68 Yahweh wil send you back to Egypt, either by ship or by a road which I promised you would neversee again. And there you wil want to offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as serving men and women, butno one wil buy you.'	68 Reducet te Dominus classibus in Aegyptum per viam, de qua dixi tibi, ut eam amplius non videres; ibi vendetis vos inimicis vestris in servos et ancillas, et non erit qui emat ”.
69 These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh ordered Moses to make with the Israelites inMoab, in addition to the covenant which he had made with them at Horeb.	69 Haec sunt verba foederis, quod praecepit Dominus Moysi, ut feriret cum filiis Israel in terra Moab, praeter illud foedus, quod cum eis pepigit in Horeb.
