Deuteronomy 2

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 'We then turned round and made for the desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph, as Yahweh hadordered me. For many days we skirted Mount Seir.	1 Ci siamo mossi e siamo partiti verso il deserto, sul cammino del Mar Rosso, come mi aveva ordinato il Signore, e per lunghi giorni abbiamo girato intorno alla montagna di Seir.
2 Yahweh then said to me,	2 Il Signore disse:
3 "You have gone far enough round this mountain; now turn north.	3 "Basta con il vostro girare intorno a questa montagna. Voltatevi verso settentrione.
4 And give the people this order: You are about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the sons ofEsau who live in Seir. They are afraid of you, and you wil be wel protected.	4 Ordina al popolo: State per attraversare il territorio dei vostri fratelli, i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir; essi avranno paura di voi, ma badate bene,
5 Do not provoke them, for I shall give you none of their land, no, not so much as a foot's length of it. Ihave given the highlands of Seir to Esau as his domain.	5 non provocateli. Della loro terra infatti non vi darò nulla, neppure quanto ne calca la pianta di un piede, poiché a Esaù ho dato in possesso la montagna di Seir.
6 Pay them in money for what food you eat; and pay them in money for the water you drink.	6 Con denaro vi comprerete da loro il cibo da mangiare; con denaro acquisterete da loro anche l'acqua da bere.
7 Yahweh your God has blessed you in al you do; he has watched over your journeying through this vastdesert. Yahweh your God has been with you these forty years and you have never been in want."	7 Il Signore tuo Dio ti ha infatti benedetto in ogni opera delle tue mani; ha vegliato sul tuo viaggio in questo grande deserto. Da quarant'anni il Signore tuo Dio è con te, e non ti è mancato nulla".
8 'So we passed beyond those relatives of ours, the children of Esau who live in Seir, by the road throughthe Arabah, Elath and Ezion-Geber; then, changing direction, we took the road towards the Plains of Moab.	8 Abbiamo oltrepassato i nostri fratelli, i figli di Esaù, che abitano il Seir, per il cammino dell'Araba, per Elat e per Ezion-Gheber, quindi abbiamo piegato e abbiamo preso il cammino del deserto di Moab.
9 Yahweh then said to me, "Do not attack Moab, do not provoke him to fight, for I shal give you none ofhis land, since I have given Ar to the children of Lot as their domain."	9 Il Signore mi ha detto: "Non essere ostile verso Moab e non provocarli a battaglia; non ti metterò in possesso della sua terra, poiché ho già dato Ar in possesso ai figli di Lot".
10 (At one time the Emim lived there, a great and numerous people, tal as the Anakim;	10 Prima vi abitavano gli Emim, popolo grande, numeroso e di alta statura come gli Anakiti.
11 and, like the Anakim, they were considered to be Rephaim, though the Moabites cal them Emim.	11 Anch'essi, come gli Anakiti, erano considerati Refaim; ma i Moabiti li chiamarono Emim.
12 The Horites, too, lived in Seir at one time; these, however, were dispossessed and exterminated bythe children of Esau who settled there in place of them, just as Israel has done in the country given to it byYahweh as a heritage.)	12 In Seir, poi, prima abitavano gli Hurriti che i figli di Esaù hanno cacciato e sterminato, e si sono stabiliti al loro posto, come ha fatto Israele per la terra del proprio possesso che il Signore gli ha dato.
13 "On your way, then! Cross the Wadi Zered!" 'And so we crossed the Wadi Zered.	13 "Ora levatevi e attraversate il torrente Zered". Abbiamo attraversato il torrente Zered.
14 From Kadesh-Barnea to the crossing of the Wadi Zered our wanderings had taken thirty-eight years;as a result of which, the entire generation of those of age to bear arms had been eliminated, as Yahweh hadsworn to them.	14 Il tempo in cui abbiamo peregrinato da Kades-Barnea fino a quando abbiamo attraversato il torrente Zered fu di trentotto anni, cioè finché dall'accampamento non è scomparsa tutta la generazione degli uomini di guerra, come il Signore aveva loro giurato.
15 Yahweh's hand had been against them, to eliminate them completely from the camp.	15 Anche la mano del Signore è stata contro di loro per disperderli dall'accampamento fino ad annientarli.
16 'When death had carried off from the people those of age to bear arms, to the last man,	16 Quando tutti gli uomini di guerra scomparvero per morte dal popolo,
17 Yahweh said this to me,	17 il Signore mi ha parlato:
18 "You are now crossing Ar, the country of Moab,	18 "Stai oggi per attraversare Ar, territorio di Moab,
19 and soon you wil encounter the children of Ammon. Do not attack them, do not provoke them, for Ishall give you none of the land belonging to the children of Ammon as your domain. I have given it to thechildren of Lot as theirs."	19 e ti avvicinerai davanti ai figli di Ammon. Non essere ostile con loro e non provocarli: non ti darò il possesso della terra dei figli di Ammon, poiché è stata data in possesso ai figli di Lot".
20 (This used also to be considered as Rephaim territory; at one time the Rephaim lived there, thoughthe Ammonites call them Zamzummim,	20 Essa era pure considerata terra dei Refaim. Prima vi abitavano i Refaim che gli Ammoniti chiamano Zamzummim.
21 a great and numerous people, and tal like the Anakim. Yahweh exterminated them for the Ammoniteswho dispossessed them and settled there in place of them,	21 Popolo grande, numeroso e di alta statura come gli Anakiti, ma il Signore li sterminò innanzi agli Ammoniti che li spossessarono e si stabilirono al loro posto.
22 just as he had done for the children of Esau who live in Seir, so that they dispossessed the Horitesand settled there instead of them and are stil there now.	22 Come aveva fatto per i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, quando sterminò gli Hurriti innanzi a loro: essi li cacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto fino ad oggi.
23 It was the same with the Avvites who occupied encampments as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, comingfrom Caphtor, exterminated them and settled there instead.)	23 Così gli Avviti, che abitavano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono sterminati dai Kaftoriti, venuti da Kaftor, che si stabilirono al loro posto.
24 "On your way! Break camp and cross the Wadi Arnon. See, I am putting Sihon the Amorite, king ofHeshbon, at your mercy, and his country too. Set about the conquest; engage him in battle.	24 "Levatevi e partite, attraversate il torrente Arnon. Vedi, metto nella tua mano Sicon, l'Amorreo, re di Chesbon, e la sua terra; incomincia a conquistarla, attaccalo in battaglia.
25 Today and henceforth, I shal fill the peoples under al heaven with fear and terror of you; whoeverhears word of your approach wil tremble and writhe in anguish because of you."	25 Da oggi comincio a spargere il terrore e la paura di te sui popoli sotto tutti i cieli. Quando sentiranno di te tremeranno e saranno in angoscia davanti alla tua faccia".
26 'So, from the desert of Kedemoth I sent envoys to Sihon king of Heshbon with this peaceful message,	26 Dal deserto di Kedemot ho inviato messaggeri a Sicon, re di Chesbon, con parole di pace:
27 "I intend to cross your country. I shal go my way, straying neither to right nor to left.	27 "Lasciami attraversare la tua terra; andrò per la mia strada senza deviare né a destra né a sinistra.
28 I shal eat and pay for the food you choose to sell me, and I shall drink and pay for the water you letme have. I only want to march through,	28 Per denaro mi venderai cibo da mangiare e per denaro mi darai acqua da bere; lascia soltanto che io passi a piedi,
29 just as the children of Esau who live in Seir permitted, as wel as the Moabites who live in Ar, until Icross the Jordan into the country that Yahweh our God is giving us."	29 come mi hanno permesso i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir e i Moabiti che abitano in Ar, finché io abbia passato il Giordano verso la terra che il Signore nostro Dio ci dona".
30 'But Sihon king of Heshbon would not give us leave to pass through his territory; Yahweh our God hadmade his spirit obstinate and his heart stubborn, to put him at your mercy, as he stil is.	30 Ma Sicon, re di Chesbon, ha rifiutato di lasciarci passare nel suo territorio, perché il Signore tuo Dio aveva irrigidito il suo spirito e indurito il suo cuore per metterlo nelle tue mani, come è oggi.
31 Yahweh said to me, "You see, I am starting to give you Sihon and his country. Begin the conquest byseizing his country."	31 Il Signore mi ha detto: "Vedi, ho cominciato col porre davanti a te Sicon e la sua terra: incomincia la conquista per impadronirti della sua terra".
32 Sihon marched out against us, he and all his people, to give battle at Jahaz.	32 Sicon è uscito contro di noi con tutto il suo popolo in battaglia a Iaaz.
33 And Yahweh our God handed him over to us: we defeated him and his sons and al his people.	33 Ma il Signore nostro Dio ce lo ha messo nelle mani, e abbiamo battuto lui con i figli e tutto il popolo.
34 We captured al his towns and laid al these towns under the curse of destruction: men, women andchildren, we left no survivors	34 Ci siamo allora impadroniti di tutte le sue città, abbiamo votato all'anatema ogni città abitata, le donne e i fanciulli; non abbiamo lasciato alcun superstite.
35 except the livestock which we took as our booty, and the spoils of the captured towns.	35 Solo del bestiame abbiamo fatto nostro bottino, con le spoglie delle città conquistate.
36 From Aroer on the edge of the Arnon valley and from the town down in the val ey, as far as Gilead, notone town was beyond our reach; Yahweh our God delivered them al to us.	36 Da Aroer che è sul bordo del torrente Arnon e dalla città che è situata nella valle fino in Galaad nessuna città è stata per noi inaccessibile. Il Signore nostro Dio ce le ha messe tutte nelle mani.
37 You did not, however, go near the country of the Ammonites, or the region of the River Jabbok, or thetowns in the highlands, or anywhere forbidden us by Yahweh our God.'	37 Solo non ti sei avvicinato alla terra dei figli di Ammon, a tutta la regione del torrente Iabbok e alle città della montagna. Tutto come il Signore nostro Dio vi aveva ordinato.
