Deuteronomy 2

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 'We then turned round and made for the desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph, as Yahweh hadordered me. For many days we skirted Mount Seir.	1 ונפן ונסע המדברה דרך ים סוף כאשר דבר יהוה אלי ונסב את הר שעיר ימים רבים
2 Yahweh then said to me,	2 ויאמר יהוה אלי לאמר
3 "You have gone far enough round this mountain; now turn north.	3 רב לכם סב את ההר הזה פנו לכם צפנה
4 And give the people this order: You are about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the sons ofEsau who live in Seir. They are afraid of you, and you wil be wel protected.	4 ואת העם צו לאמר אתם עברים בגבול אחיכם בני עשו הישבים בשעיר וייראו מכם ונשמרתם מאד
5 Do not provoke them, for I shall give you none of their land, no, not so much as a foot's length of it. Ihave given the highlands of Seir to Esau as his domain.	5 אל תתגרו בם כי לא אתן לכם מארצם עד מדרך כף רגל כי ירשה לעשו נתתי את הר שעיר
6 Pay them in money for what food you eat; and pay them in money for the water you drink.	6 אכל תשברו מאתם בכסף ואכלתם וגם מים תכרו מאתם בכסף ושתיתם
7 Yahweh your God has blessed you in al you do; he has watched over your journeying through this vastdesert. Yahweh your God has been with you these forty years and you have never been in want."	7 כי יהוה אלהיך ברכך בכל מעשה ידך ידע לכתך את המדבר הגדל הזה זה ארבעים שנה יהוה אלהיך עמך לא חסרת דבר
8 'So we passed beyond those relatives of ours, the children of Esau who live in Seir, by the road throughthe Arabah, Elath and Ezion-Geber; then, changing direction, we took the road towards the Plains of Moab.	8 ונעבר מאת אחינו בני עשו הישבים בשעיר מדרך הערבה מאילת ומעצין גבר ונפן ונעבר דרך מדבר מואב
9 Yahweh then said to me, "Do not attack Moab, do not provoke him to fight, for I shal give you none ofhis land, since I have given Ar to the children of Lot as their domain."	9 ויאמר יהוה אלי אל תצר את מואב ואל תתגר בם מלחמה כי לא אתן לך מארצו ירשה כי לבני לוט נתתי את ער ירשה
10 (At one time the Emim lived there, a great and numerous people, tal as the Anakim;	10 האמים לפנים ישבו בה עם גדול ורב ורם כענקים
11 and, like the Anakim, they were considered to be Rephaim, though the Moabites cal them Emim.	11 רפאים יחשבו אף הם כענקים והמאבים יקראו להם אמים
12 The Horites, too, lived in Seir at one time; these, however, were dispossessed and exterminated bythe children of Esau who settled there in place of them, just as Israel has done in the country given to it byYahweh as a heritage.)	12 ובשעיר ישבו החרים לפנים ובני עשו יירשום וישמידום מפניהם וישבו תחתם כאשר עשה ישראל לארץ ירשתו אשר נתן יהוה להם
13 "On your way, then! Cross the Wadi Zered!" 'And so we crossed the Wadi Zered.	13 עתה קמו ועברו לכם את נחל זרד ונעבר את נחל זרד
14 From Kadesh-Barnea to the crossing of the Wadi Zered our wanderings had taken thirty-eight years;as a result of which, the entire generation of those of age to bear arms had been eliminated, as Yahweh hadsworn to them.	14 והימים אשר הלכנו מקדש ברנע עד אשר עברנו את נחל זרד שלשים ושמנה שנה עד תם כל הדור אנשי המלחמה מקרב המחנה כאשר נשבע יהוה להם
15 Yahweh's hand had been against them, to eliminate them completely from the camp.	15 וגם יד יהוה היתה בם להמם מקרב המחנה עד תמם
16 'When death had carried off from the people those of age to bear arms, to the last man,	16 ויהי כאשר תמו כל אנשי המלחמה למות מקרב העם
17 Yahweh said this to me,	17 וידבר יהוה אלי לאמר
18 "You are now crossing Ar, the country of Moab,	18 אתה עבר היום את גבול מואב את ער
19 and soon you wil encounter the children of Ammon. Do not attack them, do not provoke them, for Ishall give you none of the land belonging to the children of Ammon as your domain. I have given it to thechildren of Lot as theirs."	19 וקרבת מול בני עמון אל תצרם ואל תתגר בם כי לא אתן מארץ בני עמון לך ירשה כי לבני לוט נתתיה ירשה
20 (This used also to be considered as Rephaim territory; at one time the Rephaim lived there, thoughthe Ammonites call them Zamzummim,	20 ארץ רפאים תחשב אף הוא רפאים ישבו בה לפנים והעמנים יקראו להם זמזמים
21 a great and numerous people, and tal like the Anakim. Yahweh exterminated them for the Ammoniteswho dispossessed them and settled there in place of them,	21 עם גדול ורב ורם כענקים וישמידם יהוה מפניהם ויירשם וישבו תחתם
22 just as he had done for the children of Esau who live in Seir, so that they dispossessed the Horitesand settled there instead of them and are stil there now.	22 כאשר עשה לבני עשו הישבים בשעיר אשר השמיד את החרי מפניהם ויירשם וישבו תחתם עד היום הזה
23 It was the same with the Avvites who occupied encampments as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, comingfrom Caphtor, exterminated them and settled there instead.)	23 והעוים הישבים בחצרים עד עזה כפתרים היצאים מכפתור השמידם וישבו תחתם
24 "On your way! Break camp and cross the Wadi Arnon. See, I am putting Sihon the Amorite, king ofHeshbon, at your mercy, and his country too. Set about the conquest; engage him in battle.	24 קומו סעו ועברו את נחל ארנן ראה נתתי בידך את סיחן מלך חשבון האמרי ואת ארצו החל רש והתגר בו מלחמה
25 Today and henceforth, I shal fill the peoples under al heaven with fear and terror of you; whoeverhears word of your approach wil tremble and writhe in anguish because of you."	25 היום הזה אחל תת פחדך ויראתך על פני העמים תחת כל השמים אשר ישמעון שמעך ורגזו וחלו מפניך
26 'So, from the desert of Kedemoth I sent envoys to Sihon king of Heshbon with this peaceful message,	26 ואשלח מלאכים ממדבר קדמות אל סיחון מלך חשבון דברי שלום לאמר
27 "I intend to cross your country. I shal go my way, straying neither to right nor to left.	27 אעברה בארצך בדרך בדרך אלך לא אסור ימין ושמאול
28 I shal eat and pay for the food you choose to sell me, and I shall drink and pay for the water you letme have. I only want to march through,	28 אכל בכסף תשברני ואכלתי ומים בכסף תתן לי ושתיתי רק אעברה ברגלי
29 just as the children of Esau who live in Seir permitted, as wel as the Moabites who live in Ar, until Icross the Jordan into the country that Yahweh our God is giving us."	29 כאשר עשו לי בני עשו הישבים בשעיר והמואבים הישבים בער עד אשר אעבר את הירדן אל הארץ אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו
30 'But Sihon king of Heshbon would not give us leave to pass through his territory; Yahweh our God hadmade his spirit obstinate and his heart stubborn, to put him at your mercy, as he stil is.	30 ולא אבה סיחן מלך חשבון העברנו בו כי הקשה יהוה אלהיך את רוחו ואמץ את לבבו למען תתו בידך כיום הזה
31 Yahweh said to me, "You see, I am starting to give you Sihon and his country. Begin the conquest byseizing his country."	31 ויאמר יהוה אלי ראה החלתי תת לפניך את סיחן ואת ארצו החל רש לרשת את ארצו
32 Sihon marched out against us, he and all his people, to give battle at Jahaz.	32 ויצא סיחן לקראתנו הוא וכל עמו למלחמה יהצה
33 And Yahweh our God handed him over to us: we defeated him and his sons and al his people.	33 ויתנהו יהוה אלהינו לפנינו ונך אתו ואת בנו ואת כל עמו
34 We captured al his towns and laid al these towns under the curse of destruction: men, women andchildren, we left no survivors	34 ונלכד את כל עריו בעת ההוא ונחרם את כל עיר מתם והנשים והטף לא השארנו שריד
35 except the livestock which we took as our booty, and the spoils of the captured towns.	35 רק הבהמה בזזנו לנו ושלל הערים אשר לכדנו
36 From Aroer on the edge of the Arnon valley and from the town down in the val ey, as far as Gilead, notone town was beyond our reach; Yahweh our God delivered them al to us.	36 מערער אשר על שפת נחל ארנן והעיר אשר בנחל ועד הגלעד לא היתה קריה אשר שגבה ממנו את הכל נתן יהוה אלהינו לפנינו
37 You did not, however, go near the country of the Ammonites, or the region of the River Jabbok, or thetowns in the highlands, or anywhere forbidden us by Yahweh our God.'	37 רק אל ארץ בני עמון לא קרבת כל יד נחל יבק וערי ההר וכל אשר צוה יהוה אלהינו
