NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
'We then turned round and made for the desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph, as Yahweh hadordered me. For many days we skirted Mount Seir.1 "When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.
Yahweh then said to me,2 Finally the LORD said to me,
"You have gone far enough round this mountain; now turn north.3 'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.
And give the people this order: You are about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the sons ofEsau who live in Seir. They are afraid of you, and you wil be wel protected.4 Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful
Do not provoke them, for I shall give you none of their land, no, not so much as a foot's length of it. Ihave given the highlands of Seir to Esau as his domain.5 not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.
Pay them in money for what food you eat; and pay them in money for the water you drink.6 You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.
Yahweh your God has blessed you in al you do; he has watched over your journeying through this vastdesert. Yahweh your God has been with you these forty years and you have never been in want."7 The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'
'So we passed beyond those relatives of ours, the children of Esau who live in Seir, by the road throughthe Arabah, Elath and Ezion-Geber; then, changing direction, we took the road towards the Plains of Moab.8 "Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.
Yahweh then said to me, "Do not attack Moab, do not provoke him to fight, for I shal give you none ofhis land, since I have given Ar to the children of Lot as their domain."9 And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.
(At one time the Emim lived there, a great and numerous people, tal as the Anakim;10 (Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;
and, like the Anakim, they were considered to be Rephaim, though the Moabites cal them Emim.11 like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.
The Horites, too, lived in Seir at one time; these, however, were dispossessed and exterminated bythe children of Esau who settled there in place of them, just as Israel has done in the country given to it byYahweh as a heritage.)12 In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)
"On your way, then! Cross the Wadi Zered!" 'And so we crossed the Wadi Zered.13 Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.
From Kadesh-Barnea to the crossing of the Wadi Zered our wanderings had taken thirty-eight years;as a result of which, the entire generation of those of age to bear arms had been eliminated, as Yahweh hadsworn to them.14 Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.
Yahweh's hand had been against them, to eliminate them completely from the camp.15 For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.
'When death had carried off from the people those of age to bear arms, to the last man,16 "When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,
Yahweh said this to me,17 the LORD said to me,
"You are now crossing Ar, the country of Moab,18 'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.
and soon you wil encounter the children of Ammon. Do not attack them, do not provoke them, for Ishall give you none of the land belonging to the children of Ammon as your domain. I have given it to thechildren of Lot as theirs."19 As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.
(This used also to be considered as Rephaim territory; at one time the Rephaim lived there, thoughthe Ammonites call them Zamzummim,20 (This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,
a great and numerous people, and tal like the Anakim. Yahweh exterminated them for the Ammoniteswho dispossessed them and settled there in place of them,21 a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.
just as he had done for the children of Esau who live in Seir, so that they dispossessed the Horitesand settled there instead of them and are stil there now.22 He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.
It was the same with the Avvites who occupied encampments as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, comingfrom Caphtor, exterminated them and settled there instead.)23 So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)
"On your way! Break camp and cross the Wadi Arnon. See, I am putting Sihon the Amorite, king ofHeshbon, at your mercy, and his country too. Set about the conquest; engage him in battle.24 "'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.
Today and henceforth, I shal fill the peoples under al heaven with fear and terror of you; whoeverhears word of your approach wil tremble and writhe in anguish because of you."25 This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'
'So, from the desert of Kedemoth I sent envoys to Sihon king of Heshbon with this peaceful message,26 "So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:
"I intend to cross your country. I shal go my way, straying neither to right nor to left.27 'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.
I shal eat and pay for the food you choose to sell me, and I shall drink and pay for the water you letme have. I only want to march through,28 For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,
just as the children of Esau who live in Seir permitted, as wel as the Moabites who live in Ar, until Icross the Jordan into the country that Yahweh our God is giving us."29 as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'
'But Sihon king of Heshbon would not give us leave to pass through his territory; Yahweh our God hadmade his spirit obstinate and his heart stubborn, to put him at your mercy, as he stil is.30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.
Yahweh said to me, "You see, I am starting to give you Sihon and his country. Begin the conquest byseizing his country."31 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'
Sihon marched out against us, he and all his people, to give battle at Jahaz.32 So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;
And Yahweh our God handed him over to us: we defeated him and his sons and al his people.33 but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
We captured al his towns and laid al these towns under the curse of destruction: men, women andchildren, we left no survivors34 At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.
except the livestock which we took as our booty, and the spoils of the captured towns.35 Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.
From Aroer on the edge of the Arnon valley and from the town down in the val ey, as far as Gilead, notone town was beyond our reach; Yahweh our God delivered them al to us.36 From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.
You did not, however, go near the country of the Ammonites, or the region of the River Jabbok, or thetowns in the highlands, or anywhere forbidden us by Yahweh our God.'37 However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.
