Deuteronomy 2

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 'We then turned round and made for the desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph, as Yahweh hadordered me. For many days we skirted Mount Seir.	1 Allora tornammo indietro e ci incamminammo verso il deserto in direzione del Mar Rosso, come il Signore mi aveva detto, e per lungo tempo girammo intorno alla montagna di Seir.
2 Yahweh then said to me,	2 Il Signore mi disse:
3 "You have gone far enough round this mountain; now turn north.	3 “Avete girato abbastanza intorno a questa montagna; volgetevi verso settentrione.
4 And give the people this order: You are about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the sons ofEsau who live in Seir. They are afraid of you, and you wil be wel protected.	4 Da’ quest’ordine al popolo: Voi state per passare i confini dei figli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, che dimorano in Seir; essi avranno paura di voi, ma state molto attenti:
5 Do not provoke them, for I shall give you none of their land, no, not so much as a foot's length of it. Ihave given the highlands of Seir to Esau as his domain.	5 non muovete loro guerra, perché della loro terra io non vi darò neppure quanto ne può calcare la pianta di un piede; infatti ho dato la montagna di Seir in proprietà a Esaù.
6 Pay them in money for what food you eat; and pay them in money for the water you drink.	6 Comprerete da loro con denaro le vettovaglie che mangerete e comprerete da loro con denaro anche l’acqua che berrete,
7 Yahweh your God has blessed you in al you do; he has watched over your journeying through this vastdesert. Yahweh your God has been with you these forty years and you have never been in want."	7 perché il Signore, tuo Dio, ti ha benedetto in ogni lavoro delle tue mani, ti ha seguito nel tuo viaggio attraverso questo grande deserto. Il Signore, tuo Dio, è stato con te in questi quarant’anni e non ti è mancato nulla”.
8 'So we passed beyond those relatives of ours, the children of Esau who live in Seir, by the road throughthe Arabah, Elath and Ezion-Geber; then, changing direction, we took the road towards the Plains of Moab.	8 Allora passammo oltre i nostri fratelli, i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, lungo la via dell’Araba, per Elat ed Esion-Ghèber. Poi piegammo e avanzammo in direzione del deserto di Moab.
9 Yahweh then said to me, "Do not attack Moab, do not provoke him to fight, for I shal give you none ofhis land, since I have given Ar to the children of Lot as their domain."	9 Il Signore mi disse: “Non attaccare Moab e non gli muovere guerra, perché io non ti darò nulla da possedere nella sua terra; infatti ho dato Ar ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà”.
10 (At one time the Emim lived there, a great and numerous people, tal as the Anakim;	10 Prima vi abitavano gli Emìm, popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti.
11 and, like the Anakim, they were considered to be Rephaim, though the Moabites cal them Emim.	11 Erano anch’essi considerati Refaìm, come gli Anakiti, ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emìm.
12 The Horites, too, lived in Seir at one time; these, however, were dispossessed and exterminated bythe children of Esau who settled there in place of them, just as Israel has done in the country given to it byYahweh as a heritage.)	12 Anche in Seir prima abitavano gli Urriti, ma i figli di Esaù li scacciarono, li distrussero e si stabilirono al posto loro, come ha fatto Israele nella terra che possiede e che il Signore gli ha dato.
13 "On your way, then! Cross the Wadi Zered!" 'And so we crossed the Wadi Zered.	13 “Ora alzatevi e attraversate il torrente Zered!”. E attraversammo il torrente Zered.
14 From Kadesh-Barnea to the crossing of the Wadi Zered our wanderings had taken thirty-eight years;as a result of which, the entire generation of those of age to bear arms had been eliminated, as Yahweh hadsworn to them.	14 La durata del nostro cammino, da Kades-Barnea al passaggio del torrente Zered, fu di trentotto anni, finché tutta quella generazione di uomini atti alla guerra scomparve dall’accampamento, come il Signore aveva loro giurato.
15 Yahweh's hand had been against them, to eliminate them completely from the camp.	15 Anche la mano del Signore era stata contro di loro, per sterminarli dall’accampamento fino ad annientarli.
16 'When death had carried off from the people those of age to bear arms, to the last man,	16 Quando da mezzo al popolo scomparvero per morte tutti quegli uomini atti alla guerra,
17 Yahweh said this to me,	17 il Signore mi disse:
18 "You are now crossing Ar, the country of Moab,	18 “Oggi tu stai per attraversare i confini di Moab, ad Ar,
19 and soon you wil encounter the children of Ammon. Do not attack them, do not provoke them, for Ishall give you none of the land belonging to the children of Ammon as your domain. I have given it to thechildren of Lot as theirs."	19 e ti avvicinerai agli Ammoniti. Non li attaccare e non muover loro guerra, perché io non ti darò nessun possesso nella terra degli Ammoniti; infatti l’ho data in proprietà ai figli di Lot”.
20 (This used also to be considered as Rephaim territory; at one time the Rephaim lived there, thoughthe Ammonites call them Zamzummim,	20 Anche questa terra era reputata terra dei Refaìm: prima vi abitavano i Refaìm e gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zamzummìm,
21 a great and numerous people, and tal like the Anakim. Yahweh exterminated them for the Ammoniteswho dispossessed them and settled there in place of them,	21 popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti; ma il Signore li aveva distrutti davanti agli Ammoniti, che li avevano scacciati e si erano stabiliti al loro posto.
22 just as he had done for the children of Esau who live in Seir, so that they dispossessed the Horitesand settled there instead of them and are stil there now.	22 Allo stesso modo il Signore aveva fatto per i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir, quando distrusse gli Urriti davanti a loro; essi li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto e vi sono rimasti fino ad oggi.
23 It was the same with the Avvites who occupied encampments as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, comingfrom Caphtor, exterminated them and settled there instead.)	23 Anche gli Avviti, che dimoravano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono distrutti dai Caftoriti, usciti da Caftor, i quali si stabilirono al loro posto.
24 "On your way! Break camp and cross the Wadi Arnon. See, I am putting Sihon the Amorite, king ofHeshbon, at your mercy, and his country too. Set about the conquest; engage him in battle.	24 “Alzatevi, levate l’accampamento e attraversate il torrente Arnon; ecco, io metto in tuo potere Sicon, l’Amorreo, re di Chesbon, e la sua terra; comincia a prenderne possesso e muovigli guerra.
25 Today and henceforth, I shal fill the peoples under al heaven with fear and terror of you; whoeverhears word of your approach wil tremble and writhe in anguish because of you."	25 Da quest'oggi comincerò a incutere paura e terrore di te nei popoli che sono sotto tutti i cieli, così che, all’udire la tua fama, tremeranno e saranno presi da spavento dinanzi a te”.
26 'So, from the desert of Kedemoth I sent envoys to Sihon king of Heshbon with this peaceful message,	26 Allora mandai messaggeri dal deserto di Kedemòt a Sicon, re di Chesbon, con parole di pace, per dirgli:
27 "I intend to cross your country. I shal go my way, straying neither to right nor to left.	27 “Lasciami passare nella tua terra; io camminerò per la strada maestra, senza volgermi né a destra né a sinistra.
28 I shal eat and pay for the food you choose to sell me, and I shall drink and pay for the water you letme have. I only want to march through,	28 Tu mi venderai per denaro le vettovaglie che mangerò e mi darai per denaro l’acqua che berrò; permettimi solo il transito,
29 just as the children of Esau who live in Seir permitted, as wel as the Moabites who live in Ar, until Icross the Jordan into the country that Yahweh our God is giving us."	29 come mi hanno permesso i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, e i Moabiti, che abitano ad Ar, finché io abbia passato il Giordano verso la terra che il Signore, nostro Dio, sta per darci”.
30 'But Sihon king of Heshbon would not give us leave to pass through his territory; Yahweh our God hadmade his spirit obstinate and his heart stubborn, to put him at your mercy, as he stil is.	30 Ma Sicon, re di Chesbon, non volle lasciarci passare, perché il Signore, tuo Dio, gli aveva reso inflessibile lo spirito e ostinato il cuore, per metterlo nelle tue mani, come appunto è oggi.
31 Yahweh said to me, "You see, I am starting to give you Sihon and his country. Begin the conquest byseizing his country."	31 Il Signore mi disse: “Vedi, ho cominciato a mettere in tuo potere Sicon e la sua terra; da’ inizio alla conquista impadronendoti della sua terra”.
32 Sihon marched out against us, he and all his people, to give battle at Jahaz.	32 Allora Sicon uscì contro di noi con tutta la sua gente per darci battaglia a Iaas.
33 And Yahweh our God handed him over to us: we defeated him and his sons and al his people.	33 Il Signore, nostro Dio, ce lo consegnò e noi sconfiggemmo lui, i suoi figli e tutta la sua gente.
34 We captured al his towns and laid al these towns under the curse of destruction: men, women andchildren, we left no survivors	34 In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città e votammo allo sterminio ogni città, uomini, donne e bambini; non vi lasciammo alcun superstite.
35 except the livestock which we took as our booty, and the spoils of the captured towns.	35 Soltanto prelevammo per noi come preda il bestiame e le spoglie delle città che avevamo preso.
36 From Aroer on the edge of the Arnon valley and from the town down in the val ey, as far as Gilead, notone town was beyond our reach; Yahweh our God delivered them al to us.	36 Da Aroèr, che è sulla riva del torrente Arnon, e dalla città che è nella valle, fino a Gàlaad, non ci fu città che fosse inaccessibile per noi: il Signore, nostro Dio, le mise tutte in nostro potere.
37 You did not, however, go near the country of the Ammonites, or the region of the River Jabbok, or thetowns in the highlands, or anywhere forbidden us by Yahweh our God.'	37 Ma non ti avvicinasti alla terra degli Ammoniti, a tutta la riva del torrente Iabbok, alle città delle montagne, a tutti i luoghi che il Signore, nostro Dio, ci aveva proibito.
