He cal ed the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases,1 Then calling together the twelve Apostles, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.
and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the infirm.
He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; anddo not have a spare tunic.3 And he said to them: “You should take nothing for the journey, neither staff, nor traveling bag, nor bread, nor money; and you should not have two tunics.
Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let your departure be from there.4 And into whatever house you shall enter, lodge there, and do not move away from there.
As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet asevidence against them.'5 And whoever will not have received you, upon departing from that city, shake off even the dust on your feet, as a testimony against them.”
So they set out and went from village to vil age proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.6 And going forth, they traveled around, through the towns, evangelizing and curing everywhere.
Meanwhile Herod the tetrarch had heard about al that was going on; and he was puzzled, becausesome people were saying that John had risen from the dead,7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all the things that were being done by him, but he doubted, because it was said
others that Elijah had reappeared, still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.8 by some, “For John has risen from the dead,” yet truly, by others, “For Elijah has appeared,” and by still others, “For one of the prophets from of old has risen again.”
But Herod said, 'John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports about?' And he was anxiousto see him.9 And Herod said: “I beheaded John. So then, who is this, about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.
On their return the apostles gave him an account of al they had done. Then he took them with him andwithdrew towards a town called Bethsaida where they could be by themselves.10 And when the Apostles returned, they explained to him all the things that they had done. And taking them with him, he withdrew to a deserted place apart, which belongs to Bethsaida.
But the crowds got to know and they went after him. He made them welcome and talked to them aboutthe kingdom of God; and he cured those who were in need of healing.11 But when the crowd had realized this, they followed him. And he received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God. And those who were in need of cures, he healed.
It was late afternoon when the Twelve came up to him and said, 'Send the people away, and they cango to the vil ages and farms round about to find lodging and food; for we are in a lonely place here.'12 Then the day began to decline. And drawing near, the twelve said to him: “Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the surrounding towns and villages, they may separate and find food. For we are here in a deserted place.”
He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' But they said, 'We have no more than five loavesand two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy food for al these people.'13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “There is with us no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we are to go and buy food for this entire multitude.”
For there were about five thousand men. But he said to his disciples, 'Get them to sit down in parties ofabout fifty.'14 Now there were about five thousand men. So he said to his disciples, “Have them recline to eat in groups of fifty.”
They did so and made them al sit down.15 And they did so. And they caused them all to recline to eat.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven, and said the blessing overthem; then he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd.16 Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish, he gazed up to heaven, and he blessed and broke and distributed them to his disciples, in order to set them before the crowd.
They al ate as much as they wanted, and when the scraps left over were col ected they fil ed twelvebaskets.17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And twelve baskets of fragments were taken up, which were left over from them.
Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to him and he put this question tothem, 'Who do the crowds say I am?'18 And it happened that, when he was praying alone, his disciples also were with him, and he questioned them, saying: “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”
And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others again one of the ancientprophets come back to life.'19 But they answered by saying: “John the Baptist. But some say Elijah. Yet truly, others say that one of the prophets from before has risen again.”
'But you,' he said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The Christ of God,' hesaid.20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” In response, Simon Peter said, “The Christ of God.”
But he gave them strict orders and charged them not to say this to anyone.21 But speaking sharply to them, he instructed them not to tell this to anyone,
He said, 'The Son of man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priestsand scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.'22 saying, “For the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the leaders of the priests and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day rise again.”
Then, speaking to al , he said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himself andtake up his cross every day and fol ow me.23 Then he said to everyone: “If anyone is willing to come after me: let him deny himself, and take up his cross every day, and follow me.
Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, wil save it.24 For whoever will have saved his life, will lose it. Yet whoever will have lost his life for my sake, will save it.
What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?25 For how does it benefit a man, if he were to gain the whole world, yet lose himself, or cause himself harm?
For if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man wil be ashamed when hecomes in his own glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.26 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words: of him the Son of man will be ashamed, when he will have arrived in his majesty and that of his Father and of the holy Angels.
'I tel you truly, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the kingdom ofGod.'27 And yet, I tell you a truth: There are some standing here who shall not taste death, until they see the kingdom of God.”
Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went upthe mountain to pray.28 And it happened that, about eight days after these words, he took Peter and James and John, and he ascended onto a mountain, so that he might pray.
And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing becamesparkling white.29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his vestment became white and shining.
And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah30 And behold, two men were talking with him. And these were Moses and Elijah, appearing in majesty.
appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.31 And they spoke of his departure, which he would accomplish at Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two menstanding with him.32 Yet truly, Peter and those who were with him were weighed down by sleep. And becoming alert, they saw his majesty and the two men who were standing with him.
As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let usmake three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.33 And it happened that, as these were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus: “Teacher, it is good for us to be here. And so, let us make three tabernacles: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what he was saying.
As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into thecloud the disciples were afraid.34 Then, as he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them. And as these were entering into the cloud, they were afraid.
And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying: “This is my beloved son. Listen to him.”
And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.36 And while the voice was being uttered, Jesus was found to be alone. And they were silent and told no one, in those days, any of these things, which they had seen.
Now it happened that on the fol owing day when they were coming down from the mountain a largecrowd came to meet him.37 But it happened on the following day that, as they were descending from the mountain, a great crowd met him.
And suddenly a man in the crowd cried out. 'Master,' he said, 'I implore you to look at my son: he is myonly child.38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you, look kindly on my son, for he is my only son.
A spirit wil suddenly take hold of him, and all at once it gives a sudden cry and throws the boy intoconvulsions with foaming at the mouth; it is slow to leave him, but when it does, it leaves the boy worn out.39 And behold, a spirit takes hold of him, and he suddenly cries out, and it throws him down and convulses him, so that he foams. And though it tears him apart, it leaves him only with difficulty.
I begged your disciples to drive it out, and they could not.'40 And I asked your disciples to cast him out, and they were unable.”
In reply Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be among you andput up with you? Bring your son here.'41 And in response, Jesus said: “O unfaithful and perverse generation! How long will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here.”
Even while the boy was coming, the devil threw him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebukedthe unclean spirit and cured the boy and gave him back to his father,42 And as he was approaching him, the demon threw him down and convulsed him.
and everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God. But while everyone was ful of admiration for alhe did, he said to his disciples,43 And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and he healed the boy, and he restored him to his father.
'For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is going to be deliveredinto the power of men.'44 And all were astonished at the greatness of God. And as everyone was wondering over all that he was doing, he said to his disciples: “You must set these words in your hearts. For it shall be that the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.”
But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see themeaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.45 But they did not understood this word, and it was concealed from them, so that they did not perceive it. And they were afraid to question him about this word.
An argument started between them about which of them was the greatest.46 Now an idea entered into them, as to which of them was greater.
Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child whom he set byhis side47 But Jesus, perceiving the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and stood him beside him.
and then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; andanyone who welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. The least among you all is the one who is thegreatest.'48 And he said to them: “Whoever will receive this child in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. For whoever is the lesser among you all, the same is greater.”
John spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'we saw someone driving out devils in your name, and because he isnot with us we tried to stop him.'49 And responding, John said: “Teacher, we saw a certain one casting out demons in your name. And we prohibited him, for he does not follow with us.”
But Jesus said to him, 'You must not stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.'50 And Jesus said to him: “Do not prohibit him. For whoever is not against you, is for you.”
Now it happened that as the time drew near for him to be taken up, he resolutely turned his facetowards Jerusalem51 Now it happened that, while the days of his dissipation were being completed, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.
and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan vil age to makepreparations for him,52 And he sent messengers before his face. And going on, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him.
but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem.53 And they would not receive him, because his face was going toward Jerusalem.
Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to cal down fire from heaven toburn them up?'54 And when his disciples, James and John, had seen this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call for fire to descend from heaven and consume them?”
But he turned and rebuked them,55 And turning, he rebuked them, saying: “Do you not know of whose spirit you are?
and they went on to another village.56 The Son of man came, not to destroy lives, but to save them.” And they went into another town.
As they travel ed along they met a man on the road who said to him, 'I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'57 And it happened that, as they were walking along the way, someone said to him, “I will follow you, wherever you will go.”
Jesus answered, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hasnowhere to lay his head.'58 Jesus said to him: “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the air have nests. But the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Another to whom he said, 'Fol ow me,' replied, 'Let me go and bury my father first.'59 Then he said to another, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”
But he answered, 'Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of thekingdom of God.'60 And Jesus said to him: “Let the dead bury their dead. But you go and announce the kingdom of God.”
Another said, 'I wil fol ow you, sir, but first let me go and say good -- bye to my people at home.'61 And another said: “I will follow you, Lord. But permit me first to explain this to those of my house.”
Jesus said to him, 'Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom ofGod.'62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow, and then looks back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
