NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
He cal ed the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases,1 Convocatis autem Duodecim, dedit illis virtutem et potesta tem superomnia daemonia, et ut languores curarent,
and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.2 et misit illos praedicare regnum Deiet sanare infirmos;
He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; anddo not have a spare tunic.3 et ait ad illos: “ Nihil tuleritis in via, neque virgamneque peram neque panem neque pecuniam, neque duas tunicas habeatis.
Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let your departure be from there.4 Et inquamcumque domum intraveritis, ibi manete et inde exite.
As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet asevidence against them.'5 Et quicumque nonreceperint vos, exeuntes de civitate illa pulverem pedum vestrorum excutite intestimonium supra illos ”.
So they set out and went from village to vil age proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.6 Egressi autem circumibant per castellaevangelizantes et curantes ubique.
Meanwhile Herod the tetrarch had heard about al that was going on; and he was puzzled, becausesome people were saying that John had risen from the dead,7 Audivit autem Herodes tetrarcha omnia, quae fiebant, et haesitabat, eo quoddiceretur a quibusdam: “ Ioannes surrexit a mortuis ”;
others that Elijah had reappeared, still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.8 a quibusdam vero:“ Elias apparuit ”; ab aliis autem: “ Propheta unus de antiquis surrexit”.
But Herod said, 'John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports about?' And he was anxiousto see him.9 Et ait Herodes: “ Ioannem ego decollavi; quis autem est iste, de quoaudio ego talia? ”. Et quaerebat videre eum.
On their return the apostles gave him an account of al they had done. Then he took them with him andwithdrew towards a town called Bethsaida where they could be by themselves.10 Et reversi apostolinarraverunt illi, quaecumque fecerunt. Et assumptis illis, secessit seorsum adcivitatem, quae vocatur Bethsaida.
But the crowds got to know and they went after him. He made them welcome and talked to them aboutthe kingdom of God; and he cured those who were in need of healing.11 Quod cum cognovissent turbae, secutae suntillum. Et excepit illos et loquebatur illis de regno Dei et eos, qui curaindigebant, sanabat.
It was late afternoon when the Twelve came up to him and said, 'Send the people away, and they cango to the vil ages and farms round about to find lodging and food; for we are in a lonely place here.'12 Dies autem coeperat declinare; et accedentes Duodecimdixerunt illi: “ Dimitte turbam, ut euntes in castella villasque, quae circasunt, divertant et inveniant escas, quia hic in loco deserto sumus ”.
He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' But they said, 'We have no more than five loavesand two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy food for al these people.'13 Aitautem ad illos: “ Vos date illis manducare ”. At illi dixerunt: “ Non suntnobis plus quam quinque panes et duo pisces, nisi forte nos eamus et emamus inomnem hanc turbam escas ”.
For there were about five thousand men. But he said to his disciples, 'Get them to sit down in parties ofabout fifty.'14 Erant enim fere viri quinque milia. Ait autem addiscipulos suos: “ Facite illos discumbere per convivia ad quinquagenos ”.
They did so and made them al sit down.15 Et ita fecerunt et discumbere fecerunt omnes.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven, and said the blessing overthem; then he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd.16 Acceptis autem quinquepanibus et duobus piscibus, respexit in caelum et benedixit illis et fregit etdabat discipulis suis, ut ponerent ante turbam.
They al ate as much as they wanted, and when the scraps left over were col ected they fil ed twelvebaskets.17 Et manducaverunt et saturatisunt omnes; et sublatum est, quod superfuit illis, fragmentorum cophiniduodecim.
Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to him and he put this question tothem, 'Who do the crowds say I am?'18 Et factum est, cum solus esset orans, erant cum illo discipuli, etinterrogavit illos dicens: “ Quem me dicunt esse turbae? ”.
And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others again one of the ancientprophets come back to life.'19 At illiresponderunt et dixerunt: “ Ioannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero:Propheta unus de prioribus surrexit ”.
'But you,' he said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The Christ of God,' hesaid.20 Dixit autem illis: “ Vos autemquem me esse dicitis? ”. Respondens Petrus dixit: “ Christum Dei ”.
But he gave them strict orders and charged them not to say this to anyone.21 Atille increpans illos praecepit, ne cui dicerent hoc,
He said, 'The Son of man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priestsand scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.'22 dicens: “ OportetFilium hominis multa pati et reprobari a senioribus et principibus sacerdotum etscribis et occidi et tertia die resurgere ”.
Then, speaking to al , he said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himself andtake up his cross every day and fol ow me.23 Dicebat autem ad omnes: “ Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsumet tollat crucem suam cotidie et sequatur me.
Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, wil save it.24 Qui enim voluerit animam suamsalvam facere, perdet illam; qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me, hicsalvam faciet illam.
What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?25 Quid enim proficit homo, si lucretur universum mundum,se autem ipsum perdat vel detrimentum sui faciat?
For if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man wil be ashamed when hecomes in his own glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.26 Nam qui me erubuerit etmeos sermones, hunc Filius hominis erubescet, cum venerit in gloria sua etPatris et sanctorum angelorum.
'I tel you truly, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the kingdom ofGod.'27 Dico autem vobis vere: Sunt aliqui hicstantes, qui non gustabunt mortem, donec videant regnum Dei ”.
Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went upthe mountain to pray.28 Factum est autem post haec verba fere dies octo, et assumpsit Petrum etIoannem et Iacobum et ascendit in montem, ut oraret.
And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing becamesparkling white.29 Et facta est, dumoraret, species vultus eius altera, et vestitus eius albus, refulgens.
And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah30 Etecce duo viri loquebantur cum illo, et erant Moyses et Elias,
appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.31 qui visi ingloria dicebant exodum eius, quam completurus erat in Ierusalem.
Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two menstanding with him.32 Petrus veroet qui cum illo gravati erant somno; et evigilantes viderunt gloriam eius etduos viros, qui stabant cum illo.
As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let usmake three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.33 Et factum est, cum discederent ab illo, aitPetrus ad Iesum: “ Praeceptor, bonum est nos hic esse; et faciamus triatabernacula: unum tibi et unum Moysi et unum Eliae ”, nesciens quid diceret.
As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into thecloud the disciples were afraid.34 Haec autem illo loquente, facta est nubes et obumbravit eos; et timueruntintrantibus illis in nubem.
And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'35 Et vox facta est de nube dicens: “ Hic estFilius meus electus; ipsum audite ”.
And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time,told no one what they had seen.36 Et dum fieret vox, inventus est Iesussolus. Et ipsi tacuerunt et nemini dixerunt in illis diebus quidquam ex his,quae viderant.
Now it happened that on the fol owing day when they were coming down from the mountain a largecrowd came to meet him.37 Factum est autem in sequenti die, descendentibus illis de monte, occurritilli turba multa.
And suddenly a man in the crowd cried out. 'Master,' he said, 'I implore you to look at my son: he is myonly child.38 Et ecce vir de turba exclamavit dicens: “ Magister,obsecro te, respice in filium meum, quia unicus est mihi;
A spirit wil suddenly take hold of him, and all at once it gives a sudden cry and throws the boy intoconvulsions with foaming at the mouth; it is slow to leave him, but when it does, it leaves the boy worn out.39 et ecce spiritusapprehendit illum, et subito clamat, et dissipat eum cum spuma et vix disceditab eo dilanians eum;
I begged your disciples to drive it out, and they could not.'40 et rogavi discipulos tuos, ut eicerent illum, et nonpotuerunt ”.
In reply Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be among you andput up with you? Bring your son here.'41 Respondens autem Iesus dixit: “ O generatio infidelis etperversa, usquequo ero apud vos et patiar vos? Adduc huc filium tuum ”.
Even while the boy was coming, the devil threw him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebukedthe unclean spirit and cured the boy and gave him back to his father,42 Etcum accederet, elisit illum daemonium et dissipavit. Et increpavit Iesusspiritum immundum et sanavit puerum et reddidit illum patri eius.
and everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God. But while everyone was ful of admiration for alhe did, he said to his disciples,43 Stupebantautem omnes in magnitudine Dei.
Omnibusque mirantibus in omnibus, quae faciebat, dixit ad discipulos suos:
'For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is going to be deliveredinto the power of men.'44 “ Ponite vos in auribus vestris sermones istos: Filius enim hominis futurumest ut tradatur in manus hominum ”.
But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see themeaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.45 At illi ignorabant verbum istud, eterat velatum ante eos, ut non sentirent illud, et time bant interrogare eum dehoc verbo.
An argument started between them about which of them was the greatest.46 Intravit autem cogitatio in eos, quis eorum maior esset.
Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child whom he set byhis side47 AtIesus sciens cogitationem cordis illorum, apprehendens puerum statuit eum secusse
and then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; andanyone who welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. The least among you all is the one who is thegreatest.'48 et ait illis: “ Quicumque susceperit puerum istum in nomine meo, merecipit; et, quicumque me receperit, recipit eum, qui me misit; nam qui minorest inter omnes vos, hic maior est ”.
John spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'we saw someone driving out devils in your name, and because he isnot with us we tried to stop him.'49 Respondens autem Ioannes dixit: “ Praeceptor, vidimus quendam in nomine tuoeicientem daemonia et prohibuimus eum, quia non sequitur nobiscum ”.
But Jesus said to him, 'You must not stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.'50 Et aitad illum Iesus: “ Nolite prohibere; qui enim non est adversus vos, pro vobisest ”.
Now it happened that as the time drew near for him to be taken up, he resolutely turned his facetowards Jerusalem51 Factum est autem, dum complerentur dies assumptionis eius, et ipse faciemsuam firmavit, ut iret Ierusalem,
and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan vil age to makepreparations for him,52 et misit nuntios ante conspectum suum. Eteuntes intraverunt in castellum Samaritanorum, ut pararent illi.
but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem.53 Et nonreceperunt eum, quia facies eius erat euntis Ierusalem.
Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to cal down fire from heaven toburn them up?'54 Cum vidissent autemdiscipuli Iacobus et Ioannes, dixerunt: “ Domine, vis dicamus, ut ignisdescendat de caelo et consumat illos? ”.
But he turned and rebuked them,55 Et conversus increpavit illos.
and they went on to another village.56 Et ierunt in aliud castellum.
As they travel ed along they met a man on the road who said to him, 'I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'57 Et euntibus illis in via, dixit quidam ad illum: “ Sequar te, quocumqueieris ”.
Jesus answered, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hasnowhere to lay his head.'58 Et ait illi Iesus: “ Vulpes foveas habent, et volucres caelinidos, Filius autem hominis non habet, ubi caput reclinet ”.
Another to whom he said, 'Fol ow me,' replied, 'Let me go and bury my father first.'59 Ait autem adalterum: “ Sequere me ”. Ille autem dixit: “ Domine, permitte mihi primumire et sepelire patrem meum ”.
But he answered, 'Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of thekingdom of God.'60 Dixitque ei Iesus: “ Sine, ut mortuisepeliant mortuos suos; tu autem vade, annuntia regnum Dei ”.
Another said, 'I wil fol ow you, sir, but first let me go and say good -- bye to my people at home.'61 Et ait alter:“ Sequar te, Domine, sed primum permitte mihi renuntiare his, qui domi sunt”.
Jesus said to him, 'Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom ofGod.'62 Ait ad illum Iesus: “ Nemo mittens manum suam in aratrum et aspiciensretro, aptus est regno Dei ”.
