NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Then he told them a parable about the need to pray continual y and never lose heart.1 Dicebat autem et parabolam ad illos, quoniam oportet semper orare et non deficere,
'There was a judge in a certain town,' he said, 'who had neither fear of God nor respect for anyone.2 dicens : Judex quidam erat in quadam civitate, qui Deum non timebat, et hominem non reverebatur.
In the same town there was also a widow who kept on coming to him and saying, "I want justice fromyou against my enemy!"3 Vidua autem quædam erat in civitate illa, et veniebat ad eum, dicens : Vindica me de adversario meo.
For a long time he refused, but at last he said to himself, "Even though I have neither fear of God norrespect for any human person,4 Et nolebat per multum tempus. Post hæc autem dixit intra se : Etsi Deum non timeo, nec hominem revereor :
I must give this widow her just rights since she keeps pestering me, or she wil come and slap me in the face." '5 tamen quia molesta est mihi hæc vidua, vindicabo illam, ne in novissimo veniens sugillet me.
And the Lord said, 'You notice what the unjust judge has to say?6 Ait autem Dominus : Audite quid judex iniquitatis dicit :
Now, will not God see justice done to his elect if they keep cal ing to him day and night even though hestill delays to help them?7 Deus autem non faciet vindictam electorum suorum clamantium ad se die ac nocte, et patientiam habebit in illis ?
I promise you, he wil see justice done to them, and done speedily. But when the Son of man comes, wil he find any faith on earth?'8 Dico vobis quia cito faciet vindictam illorum. Verumtamen Filius hominis veniens, putas, inveniet fidem in terra ?
He spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being upright and despisedeveryone else,9 Dixit autem et ad quosdam qui in se confidebant tamquam justi, et aspernabantur ceteros, parabolam istam :
'Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax col ector.10 Duo homines ascenderunt in templum ut orarent : unus pharisæus et alter publicanus.
The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, "I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like everyone else, and particularly that I am not like this tax col ector here.11 Pharisæus stans, hæc apud se orabat : Deus, gratias ago tibi, quia non sum sicut ceteri hominum : raptores, injusti, adulteri, velut etiam hic publicanus :
I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on al I get."12 jejuno bis in sabbato, decimas do omnium quæ possideo.
The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven; but he beathis breast and said, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."13 Et publicanus a longe stans, nolebat nec oculos ad cælum levare : sed percutiebat pectus suum, dicens : Deus propitius esto mihi peccatori.
This man, I tell you, went home again justified; the other did not. For everyone who raises himself upwil be humbled, but anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.'14 Dico vobis, descendit hic justificatus in domum suam ab illo : quia omnis qui se exaltat, humiliabitur, et qui se humiliat, exaltabitur.
People even brought babies to him, for him to touch them; but when the disciples saw this theyscolded them.15 Afferebant autem ad illum et infantes, ut eos tangeret. Quod cum viderent discipuli, increpabant illos.
But Jesus cal ed the children to him and said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stopthem; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.16 Jesus autem convocans illos, dixit : Sinite pueros venire ad me, et nolite vetare eos : talium est enim regnum Dei.
In truth I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enterit.'17 Amen dico vobis, quicumque non acceperit regnum Dei sicut puer, non intrabit in illud.
One of the rulers put this question to him, 'Good Master, what shal I do to inherit eternal life?'18 Et interrogavit eum quidam princeps, dicens : Magister bone, quid faciens vitam æternam possidebo ?
Jesus said to him, 'Why do you cal me good? No one is good but God alone.19 Dixit autem ei Jesus : Quid me dicis bonum ? nemo bonus nisi solus Deus.
You know the commandments: You shal not commit adultery; You shal not kil ; You shall not steal; You shal not give false witness; Honour your father and your mother.'20 Mandata nosti : non occides ; non mœchaberis ; non furtum facies ; non falsum testimonium dices ; honora patrem tuum et matrem.
He replied, 'I have kept all these since my earliest days.'21 Qui ait : Hæc omnia custodivi a juventute mea.
And when Jesus heard this he said, 'There is stil one thing you lack. Sell everything you own anddistribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.'22 Quo audito, Jesus ait ei : Adhuc unum tibi deest : omnia quæcumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo : et veni, sequere me.
But when he heard this he was overcome with sadness, for he was very rich.23 His ille auditis, contristatus est : quia dives erat valde.
Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to make their way into thekingdom of God!24 Videns autem Jesus illum tristem factum, dixit : Quam difficile, qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei intrabunt !
Yes, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter thekingdom of God.'25 facilius est enim camelum per foramen acus transire quam divitem intrare in regnum Dei.
Those who were listening said, 'In that case, who can be saved?'26 Et dixerunt qui audiebant : Et quis potest salvus fieri ?
He replied, 'Things that are impossible by human resources, are possible for God.'27 Ait illis : Quæ impossibilia sunt apud homines, possibilia sunt apud Deum.
But Peter said, 'Look, we left al we had to follow you.'28 Ait autem Petrus : Ecce nos dimisimus omnia et secuti sumus te.
He said to them, 'In truth I tel you, there is no one who has left house, wife, brothers, parents orchildren for the sake of the kingdom of God29 Qui dixit eis : Amen dico vobis, nemo est qui reliquit domum, aut parentes, aut fratres, aut uxorem, aut filios propter regnum Dei,
who will not receive many times as much in this present age and, in the world to come, eternal life.'30 et non recipiat multo plura in hoc tempore, et in sæculo venturo vitam æternam.
Then taking the Twelve aside he said to them, 'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everythingthat is written by the prophets about the Son of man is to come true.31 Assumpsit autem Jesus duodecim, et ait illis : Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et consummabuntur omnia quæ scripta sunt per prophetas de Filio hominis :
For he wil be handed over to the gentiles and wil be mocked, maltreated and spat on,32 tradetur enim gentibus, et illudetur, et flagellabitur, et conspuetur :
and when they have scourged him they will put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.'33 et postquam flagellaverint, occident eum, et tertia die resurget.
But they could make nothing of this; what he said was quite obscure to them, they did not understandwhat he was tel ing them.34 Et ipsi nihil horum intellexerunt, et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis, et non intelligebant quæ dicebantur.
Now it happened that as he drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the roadbegging.35 Factum est autem, cum appropinquaret Jericho, cæcus quidam sedebat secus viam, mendicans.
When he heard the crowd going past he asked what it was all about,36 Et cum audiret turbam prætereuntem, interrogabat quid hoc esset.
and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by.37 Dixerunt autem ei quod Jesus Nazarenus transiret.
So he called out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.'38 Et clamavit, dicens : Jesu, fili David, miserere mei.
The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted al the louder, 'Son ofDavid, have pity on me.'39 Et qui præibant, increpabant eum ut taceret. Ipse vero multo magis clamabat : Fili David, miserere mei.
Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him,40 Stans autem Jesus jussit illum adduci ad se. Et cum appropinquasset, interrogavit illum,
'What do you want me to do for you?' 'Sir,' he replied, 'let me see again.'41 dicens : Quid tibi vis faciam ? At ille dixit : Domine, ut videam.
Jesus said to him, 'Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.'42 Et Jesus dixit illi : Respice, fides tua te salvum fecit.
And instantly his sight returned and he fol owed him praising God, and al the people who saw it gavepraise to God.43 Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum. Et omnis plebs ut vidit, dedit laudem Deo.
