NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Then he told them a parable about the need to pray continual y and never lose heart.1 Dicebat autem parabolam ad illos, quoniam oportet semper orare et nondeficere,
'There was a judge in a certain town,' he said, 'who had neither fear of God nor respect for anyone.2 dicens: “ Iudex quidam erat in quadam civitate, qui Deum nontimebat et hominem non reverebatur.
In the same town there was also a widow who kept on coming to him and saying, "I want justice fromyou against my enemy!"3 Vidua autem erat in civitate illa etveniebat ad eum dicens: “Vindica me de adversario meo”.
For a long time he refused, but at last he said to himself, "Even though I have neither fear of God norrespect for any human person,4 Et nolebat permultum tempus; post haec autem dixit intra se: “Etsi Deum non timeo nechominem revereor,
I must give this widow her just rights since she keeps pestering me, or she wil come and slap me in the face." '5 tamen quia molesta est mihi haec vidua, vindicabo illam, nein novissimo veniens suggillet me” ”.
And the Lord said, 'You notice what the unjust judge has to say?6 Ait autem Dominus: “ Audite quidiudex iniquitatis dicit;
Now, will not God see justice done to his elect if they keep cal ing to him day and night even though hestill delays to help them?7 Deus autem non faciet vindictam electorum suorumclamantium ad se die ac nocte, et patientiam habebit in illis?
I promise you, he wil see justice done to them, and done speedily. But when the Son of man comes,wil he find any faith on earth?'8 Dico vobis:Cito faciet vindictam illorum. Verumtamen Filius hominis veniens, putas,inveniet fidem in terra? ”.
He spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being upright and despisedeveryone else,9 Dixit autem et ad quosdam, qui in se confidebant tamquam iusti etaspernabantur ceteros, parabolam istam:
'Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax col ector.10 “ Duo homines ascenderunt intemplum, ut orarent: unus pharisaeus et alter publicanus.
The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, "I thank you, God, that I am not grasping,unjust, adulterous like everyone else, and particularly that I am not like this tax col ector here.11 Pharisaeus stanshaec apud se orabat: “Deus, gratias ago tibi, quia non sum sicut ceterihominum, raptores, iniusti, adulteri, velut etiam hic publicanus;
I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on al I get."12 ieiuno bisin sabbato, decimas do omnium, quae possideo”.
The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven; but he beathis breast and said, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."13 Et publicanus a longe stansnolebat nec oculos ad caelum levare, sed percutiebat pectus suum dicens: “Deus,propitius esto mihi peccatori”.
This man, I tell you, went home again justified; the other did not. For everyone who raises himself upwil be humbled, but anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.'14 Dico vobis: Descendit hic iustificatus indomum suam ab illo. Quia omnis, qui se exaltat, humiliabitur; et, qui sehumiliat, exaltabitur ”.
People even brought babies to him, for him to touch them; but when the disciples saw this theyscolded them.15 Afferebant autem ad illum et infantes, ut eos tangeret; quod cum viderent,discipuli increpabant illos.
But Jesus cal ed the children to him and said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stopthem; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.16 Iesus autem convocans illos dixit: “ Sinitepueros venire ad me et nolite eos vetare; talium est enim regnum Dei.
In truth I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enterit.'17 Amendico vobis: Quicumque non acceperit regnum Dei sicut puer, non intrabit in illud”.
One of the rulers put this question to him, 'Good Master, what shal I do to inherit eternal life?'18 Et interrogavit eum quidam princeps dicens: “ Magister bone, quid faciensvitam aeternam possidebo? ”.
Jesus said to him, 'Why do you cal me good? No one is good but God alone.19 Dixit autem ei Iesus: “ Quid me dicis bonum?Nemo bonus nisi solus Deus.
You know the commandments: You shal not commit adultery; You shal not kil ; You shall not steal;You shal not give false witness; Honour your father and your mother.'20 Mandata nosti: non moechaberis, non occides, nonfurtum facies, non falsum testimonium dices, honora patrem tuum et matrem ”.
He replied, 'I have kept all these since my earliest days.'21 Qui ait: “ Haec omnia custodivi a iuventute ”.
And when Jesus heard this he said, 'There is stil one thing you lack. Sell everything you own anddistribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.'22 Quo audito, Iesus aitei: “ Adhuc unum tibi deest: omnia, quaecumque habes, vende et da pauperibuset habebis thesaurum in caelo: et veni, sequere me ”.
But when he heard this he was overcome with sadness, for he was very rich.23 His ille auditis,contristatus est, quia dives erat valde.
Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to make their way into thekingdom of God!24 Videns autem illum Iesus tristemfactum dixit: “ Quam difficile, qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei intrant.
Yes, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter thekingdom of God.'25 Facilius est enim camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem intrare inregnum Dei ”.
Those who were listening said, 'In that case, who can be saved?'26 Et dixerunt, qui audiebant: “ Et quis potest salvus fieri?”.
He replied, 'Things that are impossible by human resources, are possible for God.'27 Ait autem illis: “ Quae impossibilia sunt apud homi nes, possibiliasunt apud Deum ”.
But Peter said, 'Look, we left al we had to follow you.'28 Ait autem Petrus: “ Ecce nos dimisimus nostra et secutisumus te ”.
He said to them, 'In truth I tel you, there is no one who has left house, wife, brothers, parents orchildren for the sake of the kingdom of God29 Qui dixit eis: “ Amen dico vobis: Nemo est, qui reliquitdomum aut uxorem aut fratres aut parentes aut filios propter regnum Dei,
who will not receive many times as much in this present age and, in the world to come, eternal life.'30 etnon recipiat multo plura in hoc tempore et in saeculo venturo vitam aeternam ”.
Then taking the Twelve aside he said to them, 'Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everythingthat is written by the prophets about the Son of man is to come true.31 Assumpsit autem Duodecim et ait illis: “ Ecce ascendimus Ierusalem, etconsummabuntur omnia, quae scripta sunt per Prophetas de Filio hominis:
For he wil be handed over to the gentiles and wil be mocked, maltreated and spat on,32 tradetur enim gentibus et illudetur et contumeliis afficietur et conspuetur;
and when they have scourged him they will put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.'33 et, postquam flagellaverint, occident eum, et die tertia resurget ”.
But they could make nothing of this; what he said was quite obscure to them, they did not understandwhat he was tel ing them.34 Etipsi nihil horum intellexerunt; et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis, et nonintellegebant, quae dicebantur.
Now it happened that as he drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the roadbegging.35 Factum est autem, cum appropinquaret Iericho, caecus quidam sedebat secusviam mendicans.
When he heard the crowd going past he asked what it was all about,36 Et cum audiret turbam praetereuntem, interrogabat quid hocesset.
and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by.37 Dixerunt autem ei: “ Iesus Nazarenus transit ”.
So he called out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.'38 Et clamavitdicens: “ Iesu, fili David, miserere mei! ”.
The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted al the louder, 'Son ofDavid, have pity on me.'39 Et qui praeibant,increpabant eum, ut taceret; ipse vero multo magis clamabat: “ Fili David,miserere mei! ”.
Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him,40 Stans autem Iesus iussit illum adduci ad se. Et cumappropinquasset, interrogavit illum:
'What do you want me to do for you?' 'Sir,' he replied, 'let me see again.'41 “ Quid tibi vis faciam? ”. At illedixit: “ Domine, ut videam ”.
Jesus said to him, 'Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.'42 Et Iesus dixit illi: “ Respice! Fides tuate salvum fecit ”. 43 Et confestim vidit et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum.Et omnis plebs, ut vidit, dedit laudem Deo.
And instantly his sight returned and he fol owed him praising God, and al the people who saw it gavepraise to God.
