NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
And now once again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So he cal ed hisdisciples to him and said to them,1 In diebus illis iterum cum turba multa esset, nec haberent quod manducarent, convocatis discipulis, ait illis :
'I feel sorry for al these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat.2 Misereor super turbam : quia ecce jam triduo sustinent me, nec habent quod manducent :
If I send them off home hungry they wil col apse on the way; some have come a great distance.'3 et si dimisero eos jejunos in domum suam, deficient in via : quidam enim ex eis de longe venerunt.
His disciples replied, 'Where could anyone get these people enough bread to eat in a deserted place?'4 Et responderunt ei discipuli sui : Unde illos quis poterit saturare panibus in solitudine ?
He asked them, 'How many loaves have you?' And they said to him, 'Seven.'5 Et interrogavit eos : Quot panes habetis ? Qui dixerunt : Septem.
Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after givingthanks he broke them and began handing them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them amongthe crowd.6 Et præcepit turbæ discumbere super terram. Et accipiens septem panes, gratias agens fregit, et dabat discipulis suis ut apponerent, et apposuerunt turbæ.
They had a few smal fishes as wel , and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to bedistributed too.7 Et habebant pisciculos paucos : et ipsos benedixit, et jussit apponi.
They ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected seven basketfuls of the scraps left over.8 Et manducaverunt, et saturati sunt, et sustulerunt quod superaverat de fragmentis, septem sportas.
Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away9 Erant autem qui manducaverunt, quasi quatuor millia : et dimisit eos.
and at once, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.10 Et statim ascendens navim cum discipulis suis, venit in partes Dalmanutha.
The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with him; they demanded of him a sign from heaven,to put him to the test.11 Et exierunt pharisæi, et cœperunt conquirere cum eo, quærentes ab illo signum de cælo, tentantes eum.
And with a profound sigh he said, 'Why does this generation demand a sign? In truth I tel you, no signshall be given to this generation.'12 Et ingemiscens spiritu, ait : Quid generatio ista signum quærit ? Amen dico vobis, si dabitur generationi isti signum.
And, leaving them again, he re-embarked and went away to the other side.13 Et dimittens eos, ascendit iterum navim et abiit trans fretum.
The disciples had forgotten to take any bread and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.14 Et obliti sunt panes sumere : et nisi unum panem non habebant secum in navi.
Then he gave them this warning, 'Keep your eyes open; look out for the yeast of the Pharisees andthe yeast of Herod.'15 Et præcipiebat eis, dicens : Videte, et cavete a fermento pharisæorum, et fermento Herodis.
And they said to one another, 'It is because we have no bread.'16 Et cogitabant ad alterutrum, dicentes : quia panes non habemus.
And Jesus knew it, and he said to them, 'Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you stil notunderstand, stil not realise? Are your minds closed?17 Quo cognito, ait illis Jesus : Quid cogitatis, quia panes non habetis ? nondum cognoscetis nec intelligitis ? adhuc cæcatum habetis cor vestrum ?
Have you eyes and do not see, ears and do not hear? Or do you not remember?18 oculos habentes non videtis ? et aures habentes non auditis ? nec recordamini,
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you col ect?'They answered, 'Twelve.'19 quando quinque panes fregi in quinque millia : quot cophinos fragmentorum plenos sustulistis ? Dicunt ei : Duodecim.
'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets ful of scraps did youcol ect?' And they answered, 'Seven.'20 Quando et septem panes in quatuor millia : quot sportas fragmentorum tulistis ? Et dicunt ei : Septem.
Then he said to them, 'Do you still not realise?'21 Et dicebat eis : Quomodo nondum intelligitis ?
They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought to him a blind man whom they begged him totouch.22 Et veniunt Bethsaidam, et adducunt ei cæcum, et rogabant eum ut illum tangeret.
He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the vil age. Then, putting spittle on his eyesand laying his hands on him, he asked, 'Can you see anything?'23 Et apprehensa manu cæci, eduxit eum extra vicum : et exspuens in oculos ejus impositis manibus suis, interrogavit eum si quid videret.
The man, who was beginning to see, replied, 'I can see people; they look like trees as they walkaround.'24 Et aspiciens, ait : Video homines velut arbores ambulantes.
Then he laid his hands on the man's eyes again and he saw clearly; he was cured, and he could seeeverything plainly and distinctly.25 Deinde iterum imposuit manus super oculos ejus : et cœpit videre : et restitutus est ita ut clare videret omnia.
And Jesus sent him home, saying, 'Do not even go into the vil age.'26 Et misit illum in domum suam, dicens : Vade in domum tuam : et si in vicum introieris, nemini dixeris.
Jesus and his disciples left for the vil ages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question tohis disciples, 'Who do people say I am?'27 Et egressus est Jesus, et discipuli ejus in castella Cæsareæ Philippi : et in via interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens eis : Quem me dicunt esse homines ?
And they told him, 'John the Baptist, others Elijah, others again, one of the prophets.'28 Qui responderunt illi, dicentes : Joannem Baptistam, alii Eliam, alii vero quasi unum de prophetis.
'But you,' he asked them, 'who do you say I am?' Peter spoke up and said to him, 'You are the Christ.'29 Tunc dicit illis : Vos vero quem me esse dicitis ? Respondens Petrus, ait ei : Tu es Christus.
And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.30 Et comminatus est eis, ne cui dicerent de illo.
Then he began to teach them that the Son of man was destined to suffer grievously, and to berejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to riseagain;31 Et cœpit docere eos quoniam oportet Filium hominis pati multa, et reprobari a senioribus, et a summis sacerdotibus et scribis, et occidi : et post tres dies resurgere.
and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter tried to rebuke him.32 Et palam verbum loquebatur. Et apprehendens eum Petrus, cœpit increpare eum.
But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, 'Get behind me, Satan! Youare thinking not as God thinks, but as human beings do.'33 Qui conversus, et videns discipulos suos, comminatus est Petro, dicens : Vade retro me Satana, quoniam non sapis quæ Dei sunt, sed quæ sunt hominum.
He called the people and his disciples to him and said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, lethim renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.34 Et convocata turba cum discipulis suis, dixit eis : Si quis vult me sequi, deneget semetipsum : et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me.
Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for thesake of the gospel, wil save it.35 Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet eam : qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me, et Evangelium, salvam faciet eam.
What gain, then, is it for anyone to win the whole world and forfeit his life?36 Quid enim proderit homini, si lucretur mundum totum et detrimentum animæ suæ faciat ?
And indeed what can anyone offer in exchange for his life?37 Aut quid dabit homo commutationis pro anima sua ?
For if anyone in this sinful and adulterous generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son ofman wil also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.'38 Qui enim me confusus fuerit, et verba mea in generatione ista adultera et peccatrice, et Filius hominis confundetur eum, cum venerit in gloria Patris sui cum angelis sanctis.
Et dicebat illis : Amen dico vobis, quia sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem donec videant regnum Dei veniens in virtute.
