1 And now once again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So he cal ed hisdisciples to him and said to them,	1 - In quei giorni essendosi di nuovo fatta intorno una grande folla, che non aveva da mangiare, Gesù chiamò a sè i discepoli e disse loro:
2 'I feel sorry for al these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat.	2 «Ho compassione di questo popolo, perchè già da tre giorni sta con me e non ha da mangiare.
3 If I send them off home hungry they wil col apse on the way; some have come a great distance.'	3 Se li rimando alle loro case digiuni, verranno meno per via, perchè alcuni di essi sono venuti da lontano».
4 His disciples replied, 'Where could anyone get these people enough bread to eat in a deserted place?'	4 I suoi discepoli gli risposero: «Come è mai possibile trovare qui, in un deserto, pane abbastanza per sfamarli?».
5 He asked them, 'How many loaves have you?' And they said to him, 'Seven.'	5 Egli domandò loro: «Quanti pani avete?». Gli risposero: «Sette».
6 Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after givingthanks he broke them and began handing them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them amongthe crowd.	6 Allora comandò alla gente di seder per terra; e, presi i sette pani, rese grazie, li spezzò e li diede ai discepoli da distribuire, ed essi li distribuirono alla folla.
7 They had a few smal fishes as wel , and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to bedistributed too.	7 Avevano anche pochi pesciolini; dopo averli benedetti, Gesù li fece pur essi distribuire.
8 They ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected seven basketfuls of the scraps left over.	8 E mangiarono e furono sazi e si raccolsero sette sporte dei frammenti avanzati.
9 Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away	9 Ora quelli che avevan mangiato eran circa quattromila. Poi congedatili,
10 and at once, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.	10 montò ancora in barca coi suoi discepoli, e venne nel paese di Dalmanuta.
11 The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with him; they demanded of him a sign from heaven,to put him to the test.	11 Sopraggiunsero i Farisei che cominciarono a discutere con lui, e per metterlo alla prova, gli chiesero un segno dal cielo.
12 And with a profound sigh he said, 'Why does this generation demand a sign? In truth I tel you, no signshall be given to this generation.'	12 Ma egli, sospirando, esclamò: «Perchè questa generazione domanda un segno? In verità vi dico che non sarà dato a questa generazione nessun segno».
13 And, leaving them again, he re-embarked and went away to the other side.	13 E, lasciatili, montò novamente nella barca e passò all'altra riva.
14 The disciples had forgotten to take any bread and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.	14 Ma s'eran scordati di prender del pane e non ne avevano con sè nella barca che uno solo,
15 Then he gave them this warning, 'Keep your eyes open; look out for the yeast of the Pharisees andthe yeast of Herod.'	15 e poichè Gesù dava loro questi avvertimenti: «Badate, guardatevi dal lievito de' Farisei e dal lievito di Erode»,
16 And they said to one another, 'It is because we have no bread.'	16 essi discorrevan tra loro osservando che non avevano pane.
17 And Jesus knew it, and he said to them, 'Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you stil notunderstand, stil not realise? Are your minds closed?	17 Gesù, accortosene, disse: «Perchè mai discorrevate tra voi di non aver pane? Non riflettete ancora o non capite? Il vostro cuore è ancora indurato?
18 Have you eyes and do not see, ears and do not hear? Or do you not remember?	18 Avendo occhi, non vedete? E avendo orecchi, non udite? E non vi ricordate,
19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you col ect?'They answered, 'Twelve.'	19 quando spezzai i cinque pani per cinquemila persone, quanti canestri colmi d'avanzi raccoglieste?». «Dodici», gli risposero.
20 'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets ful of scraps did youcol ect?' And they answered, 'Seven.'	20 «E quando spezzai sette pani per quattromila persone, quante ceste d'avanzi raccoglieste?». «Sette», gli risposero.
21 Then he said to them, 'Do you still not realise?'	21 E diceva loro: «Come mai non capite ancora?».
22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought to him a blind man whom they begged him totouch.	22 Giunti a Betsaida, venne condotto a Gesù un cieco pregandolo di toccarlo.
23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the vil age. Then, putting spittle on his eyesand laying his hands on him, he asked, 'Can you see anything?'	23 Egli, preso il cieco per mano, lo condusse fuor del villaggio; gli mise della saliva sugli occhi e, impostegli le mani, gli domandò se vedesse qualche cosa.
24 The man, who was beginning to see, replied, 'I can see people; they look like trees as they walkaround.'	24 Quegli, alzati gli occhi, disse: «Vedo degli uomini come alberi che camminano».
25 Then he laid his hands on the man's eyes again and he saw clearly; he was cured, and he could seeeverything plainly and distinctly.	25 Gesù impose un'altra volta le mani sugli occhi di lui; quello guardò fisso, si trovò guarito e vedeva chiaramente ogni cosa.
26 And Jesus sent him home, saying, 'Do not even go into the vil age.'	26 Gesù allora lo rimandò a casa sua, dicendo: «Va' a casa tua e se dovessi entrare nel villaggio non parlarne ad alcuno».
27 Jesus and his disciples left for the vil ages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question tohis disciples, 'Who do people say I am?'	27 Poi Gesù co'suoi discepoli se ne andò alla volta di Cesarea di Filippo e cammin facendo interrogò i suoi discepoli così: «La gente chi dice ch'io sia?».
28 And they told him, 'John the Baptist, others Elijah, others again, one of the prophets.'	28 Essi risposero: «Gli uni dicono che sei Giovanni Battista; altri Elia; altri uno dei profeti».
29 'But you,' he asked them, 'who do you say I am?' Peter spoke up and said to him, 'You are the Christ.'	29 «Ma voialtri», domandò loro: «chi dite ch'io sia?». Pietro gli rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo».
30 And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.	30 E vietò loro di parlare ad alcuno di sè.
31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of man was destined to suffer grievously, and to berejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to riseagain;	31 Quindi cominciò a spiegar loro ch'era necessario che il Figliuol dell'uomo soffrisse molte cose, fosse riprovato dai Seniori, dai principi dei Sacerdoti e dagli Scribi e fosse ucciso e dopo tre giorni risuscitasse.
32 and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter tried to rebuke him.	32 E diceva queste cose apertamente. Pietro, presolo in disparte, cominciò a dargli sulla voce.
33 But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, 'Get behind me, Satan! Youare thinking not as God thinks, but as human beings do.'	33 Ma Gesù, voltatosi e vedendo i suoi discepoli, rimproverò Pietro, esclamando: «Va' via da me, Satana! Perchè tu non ragioni secondo Dio, ma secondo gli uomini».
34 He called the people and his disciples to him and said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, lethim renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.	34 Chiamata a sè la moltitudine coi discepoli, disse loro: «Se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me, rinneghi se stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua.
35 Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for thesake of the gospel, wil save it.	35 Perchè chi vorrà salvare la sua vita, la perderà; e chi perderà la sua vita per amor mio e del Vangelo, la salverà.
36 What gain, then, is it for anyone to win the whole world and forfeit his life?	36 Che gioverà infatti all'uomo acquistare il mondo intero, se poi perde la sua anima?
37 And indeed what can anyone offer in exchange for his life?	37 Perchè qual cosa darà l'uomo in cambio della sua anima?
38 For if anyone in this sinful and adulterous generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son ofman wil also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.'	38 Se alcuno avrà avuto vergogna di me e delle mie parole in mezzo a questa generazione adultera e peccatrice, il Figliuol dell'uomo quando verrà nella gloria del Padre suo con gli angeli santi, avrà vergogna pure lui».
	39 E soggiungeva: «In verità vi dico che tra coloro che son qui presenti, ve ne sono alcuni che non gusteranno la morte prima di aver visto il regno di Dio venire con potenza».
