NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
After he had come down from the mountain large crowds fol owed him.1 Cum autem descendisset de monte, secutæ sunt eum turbæ multæ :
Suddenly a man with a virulent skin-disease came up and bowed low in front of him, saying, 'Lord, ifyou are wil ing, you can cleanse me.'2 et ecce leprosus veniens, adorabat eum, dicens : Domine, si vis, potes me mundare.
Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him saying, 'I am willing. Be cleansed.' And his skin-diseasewas cleansed at once.3 Et extendens Jesus manum, tetigit eum, dicens : Volo : mundare. Et confestim mundata est lepra ejus.
Then Jesus said to him, 'Mind you tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priest and make theoffering prescribed by Moses, as evidence to them.'4 Et ait illi Jesus : Vide, nemini dixeris : sed vade, ostende te sacerdoti, et offer munus, quod præcepit Moyses, in testimonium illis.
When he went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him.5 Cum autem introisset Capharnaum, accessit ad eum centurio, rogans eum,
'Sir,' he said, 'my servant is lying at home paralysed and in great pain.'6 et dicens : Domine, puer meus jacet in domo paralyticus, et male torquetur.
Jesus said to him, 'I wil come myself and cure him.'7 Et ait illi Jesus : Ego veniam, et curabo eum.
The centurion replied, 'Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and myservant will be cured.8 Et respondens centurio, ait : Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum : sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur puer meus.
For I am under authority myself and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, "Go," and he goes;to another, "Come here," and he comes; to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'9 Nam et ego homo sum sub potestate constitutus, habens sub me milites, et dico huic : Vade, et vadit : et alii : Veni, et venit : et servo meo : Fac hoc, et facit.
When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, 'In truth I tell you, in no onein Israel have I found faith as great as this.10 Audiens autem Jesus miratus est, et sequentibus se dixit : Amen dico vobis, non inveni tantam fidem in Israël.
And I tel you that many will come from east and west and sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacobat the feast in the kingdom of Heaven;11 Dico autem vobis, quod multi ab oriente et occidente venient, et recumbent cum Abraham, et Isaac, et Jacob in regno cælorum :
but the children of the kingdom wil be thrown out into the darkness outside, where there wil beweeping and grinding of teeth.'12 filii autem regni ejicientur in tenebras exteriores : ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.
And to the centurion Jesus said, 'Go back, then; let this be done for you, as your faith demands.' Andthe servant was cured at that moment.13 Et dixit Jesus centurioni : Vade, et sicut credidisti, fiat tibi. Et sanatus est puer in illa hora.
And going into Peter's house Jesus found Peter's mother-in-law in bed and feverish.14 Et cum venisset Jesus in domum Petri, vidit socrum ejus jacentem, et febricitantem :
He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him.15 et tetigit manum ejus, et dimisit eam febris, et surrexit, et ministrabat eis.
That evening they brought him many who were possessed by devils. He drove out the spirits with acommand and cured al who were sick.16 Vespere autem facto, obtulerunt ei multos dæmonia habentes : et ejiciebat spiritus verbo, et omnes male habentes curavit :
This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: He himself bore our sicknesses away andcarried our diseases.17 ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam, dicentem : Ipse infirmitates nostras accepit :
et ægrotationes nostras portavit.
When Jesus saw the crowd al about him he gave orders to leave for the other side.18 Videns autem Jesus turbas multas circum se, jussit ire trans fretum.
One of the scribes then came up and said to him, 'Master, I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'19 Et accedens unus scriba, ait illi : Magister, sequar te, quocumque ieris.
Jesus said, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere tolay his head.'20 Et dicit ei Jesus : Vulpes foveas habent, et volucres cæli nidos ; Filius autem hominis non habet ubi caput reclinet.
Another man, one of the disciples, said to him, 'Lord, let me go and bury my father first.'21 Alius autem de discipulis ejus ait illi : Domine, permitte me primum ire, et sepelire patrem meum.
But Jesus said, 'Fol ow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.'22 Jesus autem ait illi : Sequere me, et dimitte mortuos sepelire mortuos suos.
Then he got into the boat fol owed by his disciples.23 Et ascendente eo in naviculam, secuti sunt eum discipuli ejus :
Suddenly a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the boat was being swamped by the waves. Buthe was asleep.24 et ecce motus magnus factus est in mari, ita ut navicula operiretur fluctibus : ipse vero dormiebat.
So they went to him and woke him saying, 'Save us, Lord, we are lost!'25 Et accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, et suscitaverunt eum, dicentes : Domine, salva nos : perimus.
And he said to them, 'Why are you so frightened, you who have so little faith?' And then he stood upand rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.26 Et dicit eis Jesus : Quid timidi estis, modicæ fidei ? Tunc surgens imperavit ventis, et mari, et facta est tranquillitas magna.
They were astounded and said, 'Whatever kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obeyhim?'27 Porro homines mirati sunt, dicentes : Qualis est hic, quia venti et mare obediunt ei ?
When he reached the territory of the Gadarenes on the other side, two demoniacs came towards himout of the tombs -- they were so dangerously violent that nobody could use that path.28 Et cum venisset trans fretum in regionem Gerasenorum, occurrerunt ei duo habentes dæmonia, de monumentis exeuntes, sævi nimis, ita ut nemo posset transire per viam illam.
Suddenly they shouted, 'What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture usbefore the time?'29 Et ecce clamaverunt, dicentes : Quid nobis et tibi, Jesu fili Dei ? Venisti huc ante tempus torquere nos ?
Now some distance away there was a large herd of pigs feeding,30 Erat autem non longe ab illis grex multorum porcorum pascens.
and the devils pleaded with Jesus, 'If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.'31 Dæmones autem rogabant eum, dicentes : Si ejicis nos hinc, mitte nos in gregem porcorum.
And he said to them, 'Go then,' and they came out and made for the pigs; and at that the whole herdcharged down the cliff into the lake and perished in the water.32 Et ait illis : Ite. At illi exeuntes abierunt in porcos, et ecce impetu abiit totus grex per præceps in mare : et mortui sunt in aquis.
The herdsmen ran off and made for the city, where they told the whole story, including what hadhappened to the demoniacs.33 Pastores autem fugerunt : et venientes in civitatem, nuntiaverunt omnia, et de eis qui dæmonia habuerant.
Suddenly the whole city set out to meet Jesus; and as soon as they saw him they implored him toleave their neighbourhood.34 Et ecce tota civitas exiit obviam Jesu : et viso eo, rogabant ut transiret a finibus eorum.
