NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
After he had come down from the mountain large crowds fol owed him.1 When Jesus came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
Suddenly a man with a virulent skin-disease came up and bowed low in front of him, saying, 'Lord, ifyou are wil ing, you can cleanse me.'2 And then a leper approached, did him homage, and said, "Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean."
Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him saying, 'I am willing. Be cleansed.' And his skin-diseasewas cleansed at once.3 He stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, "I will do it. Be made clean." His leprosy was cleansed immediately.
Then Jesus said to him, 'Mind you tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priest and make theoffering prescribed by Moses, as evidence to them.'4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you tell no one, but go show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them."
When he went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him.5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him,
'Sir,' he said, 'my servant is lying at home paralysed and in great pain.'6 saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully."
Jesus said to him, 'I wil come myself and cure him.'7 He said to him, "I will come and cure him."
The centurion replied, 'Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and myservant will be cured.8 The centurion said in reply, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.
For I am under authority myself and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, "Go," and he goes;to another, "Come here," and he comes; to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'9 For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come here,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it."
When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, 'In truth I tell you, in no onein Israel have I found faith as great as this.10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, "Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
And I tel you that many will come from east and west and sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacobat the feast in the kingdom of Heaven;11 I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the kingdom of heaven,
but the children of the kingdom wil be thrown out into the darkness outside, where there wil beweeping and grinding of teeth.'12 but the children of the kingdom will be driven out into the outer darkness, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth."
And to the centurion Jesus said, 'Go back, then; let this be done for you, as your faith demands.' Andthe servant was cured at that moment.13 And Jesus said to the centurion, "You may go; as you have believed, let it be done for you." And at that very hour (his) servant was healed.
And going into Peter's house Jesus found Peter's mother-in-law in bed and feverish.14 Jesus entered the house of Peter, and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him.15 He touched her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and waited on him.
That evening they brought him many who were possessed by devils. He drove out the spirits with acommand and cured al who were sick.16 When it was evening, they brought him many who were possessed by demons, and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick,
This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: He himself bore our sicknesses away andcarried our diseases.17 to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet: "He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases."
When Jesus saw the crowd al about him he gave orders to leave for the other side.18 When Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side.
One of the scribes then came up and said to him, 'Master, I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'19 A scribe approached and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus said, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere tolay his head.'20 Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."
Another man, one of the disciples, said to him, 'Lord, let me go and bury my father first.'21 Another of (his) disciples said to him, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father."
But Jesus said, 'Fol ow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.'22 But Jesus answered him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead."
Then he got into the boat fol owed by his disciples.23 He got into a boat and his disciples followed him.
Suddenly a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the boat was being swamped by the waves. Buthe was asleep.24 Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep.
So they went to him and woke him saying, 'Save us, Lord, we are lost!'25 They came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!"
And he said to them, 'Why are you so frightened, you who have so little faith?' And then he stood upand rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.26 He said to them, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?" Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.
They were astounded and said, 'Whatever kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obeyhim?'27 The men were amazed and said, "What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?"
When he reached the territory of the Gadarenes on the other side, two demoniacs came towards himout of the tombs -- they were so dangerously violent that nobody could use that path.28 When he came to the other side, to the territory of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs who were coming from the tombs met him. They were so savage that no one could travel by that road.
Suddenly they shouted, 'What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture usbefore the time?'29 They cried out, "What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?"
Now some distance away there was a large herd of pigs feeding,30 Some distance away a herd of many swine was feeding.
and the devils pleaded with Jesus, 'If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.'31 The demons pleaded with him, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine."
And he said to them, 'Go then,' and they came out and made for the pigs; and at that the whole herdcharged down the cliff into the lake and perished in the water.32 And he said to them, "Go then!" They came out and entered the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea where they drowned.
The herdsmen ran off and made for the city, where they told the whole story, including what hadhappened to the demoniacs.33 The swineherds ran away, and when they came to the town they reported everything, including what had happened to the demoniacs.
Suddenly the whole city set out to meet Jesus; and as soon as they saw him they implored him toleave their neighbourhood.34 Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district.
