NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
Then Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said,1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
'Why do your disciples break away from the tradition of the elders? They eat without washing theirhands.'2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
He answered, 'And why do you break away from the commandment of God for the sake of yourtradition?3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
For God said, "Honour your father and your mother" and "Anyone who curses his father or mother wilbe put to death."4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
But you say, "If anyone says to his father or mother: Anything I might have used to help you isdedicated to God,5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
he is rid of his duty to father or mother." In this way you have made God's word ineffective by means ofyour tradition.6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
Hypocrites! How rightly Isaiah prophesied about you when he said:7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me.8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Their reverence of me is worthless; the lessons they teach are nothing but human commandments.'9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
He called the people to him and said, 'Listen, and understand.10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
What goes into the mouth does not make anyone unclean; it is what comes out of the mouth thatmakes someone unclean.'11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Then the disciples came to him and said, 'Do you know that the Pharisees were shocked when theyheard what you said?'12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
He replied, 'Any plant my heavenly Father has not planted wil be pul ed up by the roots.13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
Leave them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind; and if one blind person leads another, both wilfal into a pit.'14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
At this, Peter said to him, 'Explain the parable for us.'15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
Jesus replied, 'Even you -- don't you yet understand?16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
Can't you see that whatever goes into the mouth passes through the stomach and is discharged intothe sewer?17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and it is this that makes someoneunclean.18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
For from the heart come evil intentions: murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander.19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands does not makeanyone unclean.'20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
Jesus left that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
And suddenly out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, 'Lord, Son ofDavid, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.'22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
But he said not a word in answer to her. And his disciples went and pleaded with him, saying, 'Giveher what she wants, because she keeps shouting after us.'23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
He said in reply, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.'24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
But the woman had come up and was bowing low before him. 'Lord,' she said, 'help me.'25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
He replied, 'It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to little dogs.'26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.
She retorted, 'Ah yes, Lord; but even little dogs eat the scraps that fal from their masters' table.'27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
Then Jesus answered her, 'Woman, you have great faith. Let your desire be granted.' And from thatmoment her daughter was wel again.28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Jesus went on from there and reached the shores of the Lake of Galilee, and he went up onto themountain. He took his seat,29 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
and large crowds came to him bringing the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others;these they put down at his feet, and he cured them.30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
The crowds were astonished to see the dumb speaking, the cripples whole again, the lame walkingand the blind with their sight, and they praised the God of Israel.31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
But Jesus cal ed his disciples to him and said, 'I feel sorry for al these people; they have been withme for three days now and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them off hungry, or they might col apse onthe way.'32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
The disciples said to him, 'Where in a deserted place could we get sufficient bread for such a largecrowd to have enough to eat?'33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
Jesus said to them, 'How many loaves have you?' They said, 'Seven, and a few smal fish.'34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground,35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
and he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks he broke them and began handingthem to the disciples, who gave them to the crowds.36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected what was left of the scraps, seven basketsful .37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
Now four thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
And when he had sent the crowds away he got into the boat and went to the territory of Magadan.39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala,
