The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to theBabylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.17 Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before theycame to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.
Her husband Joseph, being an upright man and wanting to spare her disgrace, decided to divorce herinformal y.19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
He had made up his mind to do this when suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dreamand said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceivedwhat is in her by the Holy Spirit.20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.
She wil give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save hispeople from their sins.'21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Now al this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Look! the virgin is with child and will give birth to a son whom they wil cal Immanuel, a name whichmeans 'God-is-with-us'.23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means "God is with us."
When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to hishome;24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
he had not had intercourse with her when she gave birth to a son; and he named him Jesus.25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.
