Jonah 1

1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 И было слово Господне к Ионе, сыну Амафиину:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 встань, иди в Ниневию, город великий, и проповедуй в нем, ибо злодеяния его дошли до Меня.
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 И встал Иона, чтобы бежать в Фарсис от лица Господня, и пришел в Иоппию, и нашел корабль, отправлявшийся в Фарсис, отдал плату за провоз и вошел в него, чтобы плыть с ними в Фарсис от лица Господа.
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 Но Господь воздвиг на море крепкий ветер, и сделалась на море великая буря, и корабль готов был разбиться.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 И устрашились корабельщики, и взывали каждый к своему богу, и стали бросать в море кладь с корабля, чтобы облегчить его от нее; Иона же спустился во внутренность корабля, лег и крепко заснул.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 И пришел к нему начальник корабля и сказал ему: что ты спишь? встань, воззови к Богу твоему; может быть, Бог вспомнит о нас и мы не погибнем.
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 И сказали друг другу: пойдем, бросим жребии, чтобы узнать, за кого постигает нас эта беда. И бросили жребии, и пал жребий на Иону.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 Тогда сказали ему: скажи нам, за кого постигла нас эта беда? какое твое занятие, и откуда идешь ты? где твоя страна, и из какого ты народа?
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 И он сказал им: я Еврей, чту Господа Бога небес, сотворившего море и сушу.
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 И устрашились люди страхом великим и сказали ему: для чего ты это сделал? Ибо узнали эти люди, что он бежит от лица Господня, как он сам объявил им.
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 И сказали ему: что сделать нам с тобою, чтобы море утихло для нас? Ибо море не переставало волноваться.
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 Тогда он сказал им: возьмите меня и бросьте меня в море, и море утихнет для вас, ибо я знаю, что ради меня постигла вас эта великая буря.
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 Но эти люди начали усиленно грести, чтобы пристать к земле, но не могли, потому что море все продолжало бушевать против них.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 Тогда воззвали они к Господу и сказали: молим Тебя, Господи, да не погибнем за душу человека сего, и да не вменишь нам кровь невинную; ибо Ты, Господи, соделал, что угодно Тебе!
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 И взяли Иону и бросили его в море, и утихло море от ярости своей.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 И устрашились эти люди Господа великим страхом, и принесли Господу жертву, и дали обеты.
	17 (2-1) И повелел Господь большому киту поглотить Иону; и был Иона во чреве этого кита три дня и три ночи.
