Jonah 1

1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 Il Signore parlò a Giona figliuolo di Amathi, e disse:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 Alzati, e va a Ninive citta grande, ed ivi predica, perchè il clamore di sua malvagità è salito fino a me.
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 E Giona si mosse per fuggirsene a Tharsis dalla faccia del Signore, e andò a Joppe, e trovò una nave, che facea vela per Tharsis, e pagò il suo nolo, ed entrò in essa cogli altri per andarsene a Tharsis, fuggendo dalla faccia del Signore.
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 Ma il Signore mandò sul mare un gran vento, e si fece gran tempesta di mare, e la nave era in pericolo di essere fracassata.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 E i marinari erano sbigottiti, e alzò le grida ciascuno al suo dio, e gettarono in mare il carico della nave per alleggiarla: ma Giona era sceso nel fondo della nave, e dormiva profondamente.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 E il piloto se gli accostò, e gli disse: Che fai tu dormiglione? alzati, e invoca il tuo Dio, se a sorte Dio si ricordasse di noi, e ci sottraesse alla perdizione.
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 Indi dissero l'un uomo all'altro: Venite, e tiriamo le sorti per sapere donde venga a noi questa sciagura: e tirarono a sorte, e la sorte cadde sopra di Giona.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 E dissero a lui: Fa tu sapere a noi il perchè ci troviamo in tal miseria, che mestiere è il tuo? di dove sei, e dove vai, e di qual nazione se' tu?
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 E quegli disse: Io sono Ebreo, e temo il Signore Dio del cielo, e della terra, che fece il mare, e la terra.
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 E coloro rimasero sbigottiti grandemente, e gli dissero: Perchè hai tu fatto questo? (Imperocché dal suo racconto avean compreso, com'ei fuggiva dalla faccia del Signore.)
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 E gli dissero: Che farem noi di te, affinchè il mare si plachi con noi? perocché il mare si andava ingrossando.
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 Ed ei disse loro: Prendetemi, e gettatemi in mare, e il mare si acquieterà; perocché io so, che per mia cagione vi ha assaliti questa tempesta.
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 E la gente s'aiutava co' remi per tornare a terra, ma non potevano, per chè il mare si andava gonfiando sopra di loro.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 E alzaron le grida al Signore, e dissero: Signore, ti preghiamo, che non abbiam noi a perire, per aver data la morte a quest'uomo, e non porre sopra di noi il sangue innocente; per chè tu, o Signore, fai quello, che ti piace.
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 E preser Giona, e lo messero nel mare, e il furore del mare cessò.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 E quelli concepiron timore grande del Signore; e immolarono ostie al Signore, e fecer dei voti.
