Jonah 1

NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 LA parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Giona, figliuolo di Amittai, dicendo:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 Levati, va’ in Ninive, la gran città, e predica contro ad essa; perciocchè la lor malvagità è salita nel mio cospetto.
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 Ma Giona si levò, per fuggirsene in Tarsis, dal cospetto del Signore; e scese in Iafo, ove trovò una nave, che andava in Tarsis; ed egli, pagato il nolo, vi entrò, per andarsene con la gente della nave in Tarsis, lungi dal cospetto del Signore
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 Ma il Signore lanciò un gran vento nel mare, e vi fu una gran tempesta in mare, talchè la nave si credette rompere.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 E i marinai temettero, e gridarono ciascuno al suo dio, e gettarono gli arredi ch’erano nella nave in mare, per alleviarsene. Or Giona era sceso nel fondo della nave, e giaceva, ed era profondamente addormentato.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 E il nocchiero si accostò a lui, e gli disse: Che fai tu, dormitore? Levati, grida all’Iddio tuo; forse Iddio si darà pensier di noi, e non periremo.
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 Poi dissero l’uno all’altro: Venite, e tiriamo le sorti, e sappiamo chi è cagione che questo male ci è avvenuto. Trassero adunque le sorti, e la sorte cadde sopra Giona.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 Allora essi gli dissero: Deh! dichiaraci chi è cagione che questo male ci è avvenuto; quale è il tuo mestiere? ed onde vieni? quale è il tuo paese? e di qual popolo sei?
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 Ed egli disse loro: Io sono Ebreo, e temo il Signore Iddio del cielo, che ha fatto il mare e l’asciutto.
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 E quegli uomini temettero di gran timore, e gli dissero: Che hai tu fatto? Conciossiachè quegli uomini sapessero ch’egli se ne fuggiva dal cospetto del Signore; perciocchè egli l’avea lor dichiarato
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 Ed essi gli dissero: Che ti faremo, acciocchè il mare si acqueti, lasciandoci in riposo? conciossiachè la tempesta del mare andasse vie più crescendo.
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 Ed egli disse loro: Prendetemi, e gettatemi nel mare, e il mare si acqueterà lasciandovi in riposo; perciocchè io conosco che per cagion mia questa gran tempesta vi è sopraggiunta.
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 E quegli uomini a forza di remi si studiavano di ammainare a terra; ma non potevano, perciocchè la tempesta del mare andava vie più crescendo contro a loro.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 Allora gridarono al Signore, e dissero: Ahi Signore! deh! non far che periamo per la vita di quest’uomo; e non metterci addosso il sangue innocente; conciossiachè tu Signore, abbi operato come ti è piaciuto.
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 E presero Giona, e lo gettarono in mare; e il mare si fermò, cessando dal suo cruccio.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 E quegli uomini temettero di gran timore il Signore; e sacrificarono sacrificii al Signore, e votarono voti.
	17 OR il Signore avea preparato un gran pesce, per inghiottir Giona; e Giona fu nelle interiora del pesce tre giorni, e tre notti
