Jonah 1

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 La palabra del Señor se dirigió a Jonás, hijo de Amitai, en estos términos:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 «Parte ahora mismo para Nínive, la gran ciudad, y clama contra ella, porque su maldad ha llegado hasta mí».
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 Pero Jonás partió para huir a Tarsis, lejos de la presencia del Señor. Bajó a Jope y encontró allí un barco que zarpaba hacia Tarsis; pagó su pasaje y se embarcó para irse con ellos a Tarsis, lejos de la presencia del Señor.
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 Pero el Señor envió un fuerte viento sobre el mar, y se desencadenó una tempestad tan grande que el barco estaba a punto de partirse.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 Los marineros, aterrados, invocaron cada uno a su dios, y arrojaron el cargamento al mar para aligerar la nave. Mientras tanto, Jonás había descendido al fondo del barco, se había acostado y dormía profundamente.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 El jefe de la tripulación se acercó a él y le preguntó: «¿Qué haces aquí dormido? Levántate e invoca a tu dios. Tal vez ese dios se acuerde de nosotros, para que no perezcamos».
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 Luego se dijeron unos a otros: «Echemos suertes para saber por culpa de quién nos viene este desgracia». Así lo hicieron, y la suerte recayó sobre Jonás.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 Entonces le dijeron: «Explícanos por qué nos sobrevino esta desgracia. ¿Cuál es tu oficio? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu país? ¿A qué pueblo perteneces?».
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 El les respondió: «Yo soy hebreo y venero al Señor, el Dios del cielo, el que hizo el mar y la tierra».
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 Aquellos hombres sintieron un gran temor, y le dijeron: «¡Qué has hecho!», ya que comprendieron, por lo que él les había contado, que huía de la presencia del Señor.
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 Y como el mar se agitaba cada vez más, le preguntaron: «¿Qué haremos contigo para que el mar se nos calme?».
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 Jonás les respondió: «Levántenme y arrójenme al mar, y el mar se les calmará. Yo sé muy bien que por mi culpa les ha sobrevenido esta gran tempestad».
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 Los hombres se pusieron a remar con fuerza, para alcanzar tierra firme; pero no lo consiguieron, porque el mar se agitaba cada vez más contra ellos.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 Entonces invocaron al Señor, diciendo: «¡Señor, que no perezcamos a causa de la vida de este hombre! No nos hagas responsables de una sangre inocente, ya que tú, Señor, has obrado conforme a tu voluntad».
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 Luego, levantaron a Jonás, lo arrojaron al mar, y en seguida se aplacó la furia del mar.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 Los hombres, llenos de un gran temor al Señor, le ofrecieron un sacrificio e hicieron votos.
