Jonah 1

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 La parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jonas, fils d'Amittaï:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 "Lève-toi, lui dit-il, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et annonce-leur que leur méchanceté est montéejusqu'à moi."
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 Jonas se mit en route pour fuir à Tarsis, loin de Yahvé. Il descendit à Joppé et trouva un vaisseau àdestination de Tarsis, il paya son passage et s'embarqua pour se rendre avec eux à Tarsis, loin de Yahvé.
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 Mais Yahvé lança sur la mer un vent violent, et il y eut grande tempête sur la mer, au point que levaisseau menaçait de se briser.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 Les matelots prirent peur; ils crièrent chacun vers son dieu, et pour s'alléger, jetèrent à la mer lacargaison. Jonas cependant était descendu au fond du bateau; il s'était couché et dormait profondément.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 Le chef de l'équipage s'approcha de lui et lui dit: "Qu'as-tu à dormir? Lève-toi, crie vers ton Dieu!Peut-être Dieu songera-t-il à nous et nous ne périrons pas."
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 Puis ils se dirent les uns aux autres: "Tirons donc au sort, pour savoir de qui nous vient ce mal." Ilsjetèrent les sorts et le sort tomba sur Jonas.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 Ils lui dirent alors: "Dis-nous donc quelle est ton affaire, d'où tu viens, quel est ton pays et à quelpeuple tu appartiens."
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 Il leur répondit: "Je suis Hébreu, et c'est Yahvé que j'adore, le Dieu du ciel qui a fait la mer et la terre."
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 Les hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte et ils lui dirent: "Qu'as-tu fait là!" Ils savaient en effetqu'il fuyait loin de Yahvé, car il le leur avait raconté.
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 Ils lui dirent: "Que te ferons-nous pour que la mer s'apaise pour nous?" Car la mer se soulevait deplus en plus.
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 Il leur répondit: "Prenez-moi et jetez-moi à la mer, et la mer s'apaisera pour vous. Car, je le sais, c'està cause de moi que cette violente tempête vous assaille."
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 Les hommes ramèrent pour gagner le rivage, mais en vain, car la mer se soulevait de plus en pluscontre eux.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 Alors ils implorèrent Yahvé et dirent: "Ah! Yahvé, puissions-nous ne pas périr à cause de la vie decet homme, et puisses-tu ne pas nous charger d'un sang innocent, car c'est toi, Yahvé, qui as agi selon ton bonplaisir."
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 Et, s'emparant de Jonas, ils le jetèrent à la mer, et la mer apaisa sa fureur.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 Les hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte de Yahvé; ils offrirent un sacrifice à Yahvé et firentdes voeux.
