Jonah 1

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 Il Signore parlò a Giona figlio d'Amati, e gli disse:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 « Alzati e va a Ninive, la gran città, a predicarvi, perchè la sua malvagità giunse fino a me ».
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 Giona si mosse per fuggire a Tarsis, lungi dal Signore. Disceso a loppe, e trovatavi una nave che andava a Tarsis, pagò il suo nolo e v'entrò, per andare cogli altri a Tarsis, lungi dal Signore.
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 Mà il Signore mandò sul mare un gran vento, e il mare fu agitato da gran tempesta, e la nave minacciava di sfasciarsi.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 I marinai erano impauriti, ciascuno alzò le grida al suo dio, gettarono il carico della nave per alleggerirla; ma Giona, sceso nel fondo della nave, dormiva profondamente.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 Allora il capitano della nave gli s'accostò e gli disse: « Che stai tu a dormire? Alzati e invoca il tuo Dio: forse Dio penserà a noi e non periremo ».
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 Poi si dissero l'un l'altro: « Venite, gettiamo le sorti, per sapere da chi ci viene questa sciagura ». Gettate le sorti, la sorte cadde sopra Giona.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 Allora gli dissero: « Facci sapere la ragione di questa sventura. Qual'è la tua professione? Di dove sei? dove vai? Quale è il tuo popolo? »
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 Giona rispose: « Io sono ebreo, e temo il Signore Dio del Cielo, che fece il mare e la terra ».
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 Gli uomini, presi da gran timore, gli dissero: « Perchè hai fatto questo? » (Dal suo racconto avevano compreso com'ei fuggisse dalla faccia del Signore).
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 Poi gli dissero: « Che dobbiam farti, perchè il mare non infurii più contro di noi? » Il mare seguitava a ingrossare.
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 Giona rispose loro: « Prendetemi e gettatemi in mare, e il mare si placherà, perchè so bene che per colpa mia s'è abbattuta su di voi questa gran tempesta ».
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 La gente cercò d'aiutarsi coi remi per tornare a terra; ma non fu possibile, perchè il mare seguitava a gonfiare sopra di loro.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 Allora alzaron le grida al Signore, e dissero: «Ti scongiuriamo, o Signore, a non farci perire per la morte di quest'uomo, non imputarci un sangue innocente, perchè sei tu, o Signore, che hai fatto quel che t'è piaciuto ».
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 Poi, preso Giona, lo gettarono in mare; e il mare si calmò.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 Allora quegli uomini, presi da gran timore pel Signore, immolarono ostie al Signore e fecero dei voti.
