Jonah 1

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:	1 - E il Signore comunicò la sua parola a Giona, figlio di Amati, e gli disse:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'	2 «Alzati e va' nella grande città di Ninive a predicare, perchè la sua malvagità è salita fino a me».
3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.	3 E Giona si alzò per fuggirsene in Tarsis dalla faccia del Signore; e scese a Joppe e trovò una nave che salpava per Tarsis, e le pagò il nolo e vi montò sopra per andarsene in Tarsis, fuggendo dalla faccia del Signore.
4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.	4 E il Signore scatenò un gran vento in mare e si fece gran burrasca, e la nave era in pericolo di rompersi.
5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,	5 E i marinai erano tutti spaventati e ciascuno invocava il suo Dio, e gettavano in mare il carico per alleggerirla, e Giona era sceso nell'interno della nave e dormiva in un profondo sonno.
6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'	6 E il pilota gli si accostò e gli disse: «Che stai sprofondato nel sonno? Alzati e invoca il tuo Dio; che voglia Dio ricordarsi di noi, e non periamo!».
7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.	7 E dissero gli uni ai loro compagni: «Venite, tiriamo le sorti, vogliam sapere per causa di chi ci sia venuta questa disgrazia?». E tirarono le sorti, e la sorte cadde sopra Giona.
8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'	8 Allora gli dissero: «Facci sapere per causa di chi questa disgrazia si è scatenata sopra di noi? che faccenda hai? di che paese sei, e dove vai, e di che nazione sei tu?».
9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'	9 Ed egli disse loro: «Sono ebreo e venero il Signore Dio del cielo che fece il mare e la terra».
10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.	10 E quegli uomini si sgomentarono grandemente e gli dissero: «Che mai hai fatto!». (Avevano infatti sentito che fuggiva dalla faccia del Signore, perchè l'aveva loro palesato).
11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.	11 E gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare di te, affinchè il mare cessi dall'infuriare contro di noi?». Perchè il mare infuriava e andava sempre più ingrossandosi.
12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'	12 E disse loro: «Prendetemi e gettatemi in mare e il mare deporrà le sue ire contro di voi, perchè so io bene che per causa mia questa gran tempesta è venuta sopra di noi».
13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.	13 E gli uomini facevano ogni sforzo di remi per raggiungere terra, ma non riuscivano perchè il mare si faceva sempre più agitato e gonfio contro di loro.
14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'	14 Allora esclamarono verso il Signore dicendo: «Signore, ti preghiamo di non farci perire per l'anima di questo uomo e di non fare colpa a noi di sangue innocente, perchè sei tu, o Signore, che hai fatto come hai voluto».
15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.	15 E presero Giona e lo gettarono in mare e il mare subito ristette dall'infuriare.
16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.	16 E quegli uomini concepirono gran timore pel Signore; ed immolarono vittime al Signore e fecero voti.
