NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:1 Et factum est verbum Domini ad Ionam filium Amathi dicens:
'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'2 “ Surge etvade in Nineven civitatem grandem et praedica in ea, quia ascendit malitia eiuscoram me ”.
Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.3 Et surrexit Ionas, ut fugeret in Tharsis a facie Domini; etdescendit Ioppen et invenit navem euntem in Tharsis et dedit naulum eius etdescendit in eam, ut iret cum eis in Tharsis a facie Domini.
But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.4 Dominus autem misit ventum magnum in mare, et facta est tempestas magna inmari, et navis periclitabatur conteri.
The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,5 Et timuerunt nautae et clamaveruntunusquisque ad deum suum et miserunt vasa, quae erant in navi, in mare, utalleviaretur ab eis. Ionas autem descenderat ad interiora navis et, cumrecubuisset, dormiebat sopore gravi.
when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'6 Et accessit ad eum gubernator et dixitei: “ Quid? Tu sopore deprimeris? Surge, invoca Deum tuum, si forte recogitetDeus de nobis, et non pereamus ”.
Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.7 Et dixit unusquisque ad collegam suum: “ Venite, et mittamus sortes, utsciamus quare hoc malum sit nobis ”. Et miserunt sortes, et cecidit sors superIonam.
Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country? What is your nationality?'8 Et dixerunt ad eum: “ Indica nobis cuius causa malum istud sit nobis.Quod est opus tuum, et unde venis? Quae terra tua, et ex quo populo es tu? ”.
He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'9 Et dixit ad eos: “ Hebraeus ego sum et Dominum, Deum caeli, ego timeo, quifecit mare et aridam ”.
The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.10 Et timuerunt viri timore magno et dixerunt ad eum:“ Quid hoc fecisti? ”. Cognoverant enim viri quod a facie Domini fugeret, quia indicaverat eis.
They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.11 Et dixerunt ad eum: “ Quid faciemus tibi, ut conticescat mare a nobis? ”.Mare enim magis ac magis intumescebat.
He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'12 Et dixit ad eos: “ Tollite me etmittite in mare, et cessabit mare a vobis; scio enim ego quoniam propter metempestas haec grandis super vos ”.
The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.13 Et remigabant viri, ut reverterentur ad aridam; et non valebant, quia maremagis intumescebat super eos.
So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'14 Et clamaverunt ad Dominum et dixerunt: “Quaesumus, Domine, ne pereamus in anima viri istius, et ne des super nossanguinem innocentem; quia tu, Domine, sicut voluisti, fecisti ”.
And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.15 Ettulerunt Ionam et miserunt in mare; et stetit mare a fervore suo.
At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.16 Ettimuerunt viri timore magno Dominum et immolaverunt hostias Domino et voveruntvota.
