' "This is the list of the tribes. One portion in the far north by way of Hethlon to the Pass of Hamath, toHazer-Enon, with the territory of Damascus to the north, and marching with Hamath, from the eastern limit to thewestern limit: Dan.1 This is the list of the tribes. Dan: at the northern extremity, adjoining Hamath, all along from the approaches to Hethlon through Labo of Hamath to Hazar-enon, on the northerly border with Damascus, with his possession reaching from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Dan, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Asher.2 Asher: on the frontier of Dan, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Asher, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Naphtali.3 Naphtali: on the frontier of Asher, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Naphtali, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Manasseh.4 Manasseh: on the frontier of Naphtali, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Manasseh, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Ephraim.5 Ephraim: on the frontier of Manasseh, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Ephraim, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Reuben.6 Reuben: on the frontier of Ephraim, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Reuben, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Judah.7 Judah: on the frontier of Reuben, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Judah, from the eastern limit to the western limit, is the portion which you mustset aside, twenty-five thousand cubits wide, and as long as each of the other portions from the eastern limit tothe western limit. The sanctuary wil be in the centre of it.8 On the frontier of Judah, from the eastern to the western boundary there shall be the tract which you shall set apart, twenty-five thousand cubits from north to south, and as wide as one of the tribal portions from the eastern to the western boundary. In the center of the tract shall be the sanctuary.
"The portion which you must set aside for Yahweh must be twenty-five thousand cubits long and tenthousand cubits wide.9 The tract that you set aside for the LORD shall be twenty-five thousand cubits across by twenty thousand north and south.
This sacred portion must belong to the priests, being, on the north side, twenty-five thousand cubits;on the west side ten thousand cubits wide, on the east side ten thousand cubits wide and on the south sidetwenty-five thousand cubits long; the sanctuary of Yahweh wil be in the centre of it.10 In this sacred tract the priests shall have twenty-five thousand cubits on the north, ten thousand on the west, ten thousand on the east, and twenty-five thousand on the south; and the sanctuary of the LORD shall be in its center.
This wil be for the consecrated priests, those of the sons of Zadok who maintained my liturgy and didnot go astray with the straying Israelites, as the Levites went astray.11 The consecrated priests, the Zadokites, who fulfilled my service and did not stray along with the Israelites as the Levites did,
And so their portion must be taken out of the especial y holy portion of the land, near the territory ofthe Levites.12 shall have within this tract of land their own most sacred domain, next to the territory of the Levites.
The territory of the Levites, like the territory of the priests, must be twenty-five thousand cubits longand ten thousand wide -- the whole length being twenty-five thousand and the width ten thousand.13 The Levites shall have a territory corresponding to that of the priests, twenty-five thousand cubits by ten thousand. The whole tract shall be twenty-five thousand cubits across and twenty thousand north and south.
It wil be il egal for them to sell or exchange any part of it, and the domain can never be alienated, since it is consecrated to Yahweh.14 They may not sell or exchange or alienate this, the best part of the land, for it is sacred to the LORD.
As regards the remainder, an area of five thousand cubits by twenty-five thousand, this must be forthe common use of the city, for houses and pastures. In the middle wil be the city.15 The remaining five thousand cubits along the twenty-five-thousand-cubit line are profane land, assigned to the City for dwellings and pasture; the City shall be at their center.
These wil be its dimensions: on the north side, four thousand five hundred cubits; on the south side, four thousand five hundred cubits; on the east side, four thousand five hundred cubits; on the west side, fourthousand five hundred cubits.16 These are the dimensions of the City: the north side, forty-five hundred cubits; the south side, forty-five hundred cubits; the east side, forty-five hundred cubits; and the west side, forty-five hundred cubits.
The pasture land of the city must extend two hundred and fifty cubits to the north, two hundred andfifty to the south, two hundred and fifty to the east, two hundred and fifty to the west.17 The pasture lands of the City shall extend north two hundred and fifty cubits, south two hundred and fifty cubits, east two hundred and fifty cubits, and west two hundred and fifty cubits.
One strip, contiguous to the sacred portion, must be left over, consisting of ten thousand cubits toeastward and ten thousand to westward, marching with the sacred portion; this wil bring in a revenue for feedingthe municipal workmen.18 There shall remain an area along the sacred tract, ten thousand cubits to the east and ten thousand to the west, whose produce shall provide food for the workers of the City.
And the municipal workmen, drawn from al the tribes of Israel, wil farm it.19 The workers in the City shall be taken from all the tribes of Israel.
The portion must have a total area of twenty-five thousand cubits by twenty-five thousand. You mustal ocate a square area from the sacred portion to constitute the city.20 The entire tract shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand cubits; as a perfect square you shall set apart the sacred tract together with the City property.
What is left over wil be for the prince, on either side of the sacred portion and of the property of thecity, marching with the twenty-five thousand cubits to eastward to the eastern frontier, and marching with thetwenty-five thousand cubits to westward to the western frontier -- running paral el with the other portions andbelonging to the prince. In the centre wil be the sacred portion and the sanctuary of the Temple.21 The remainder shall belong to the prince: the land on both sides of the sacred tract and the City property, extending along the twenty-five-thousand-cubit line eastward to the eastern boundary, and westward along the twenty-five-thousand-cubit line to the western boundary, a territory parallel with the tribal portions for the prince. The sacred tract and the sanctuary of the temple shall be in the middle.
Thus, apart from the property of the Levites and the property of the city which lie in the middle of theprince's portion, everything between the borders of Judah and the borders of Ben- jamin must belong to theprince.22 Thus, except for the property of the Levites and the City property, which lie in the midst of the prince's property, the territory between the portions of Judah and of Benjamin shall belong to the prince.
"As regards the rest of the tribes: One portion from the eastern limit to the western limit: Benjamin.23 These are the remaining tribes. Benjamin: from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Benjamin, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Simeon.24 Simeon: on the frontier of Benjamin, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Simeon, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Issachar.25 Issachar: on the frontier of Simeon, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Issachar, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Zebulun.26 Zebulun: on the frontier of Issachar, from the eastern to the western boundary.
One portion bordering Zebulun, from the eastern limit to the western limit: Gad.27 Gad: on the frontier of Zebulun, from the eastern to the western boundary.
On the southern border of Gad, on the south side, the border will run from Tamar to the Waters ofMeribah in Kadesh, to the Wadi and the Great Sea.28 Along the frontier of Gad shall be the southern boundary, which shall extend from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, and from there to the Wadi of Egypt, and on to the Great Sea.
This is how you must distribute the country to the tribes of Israel as their heritage, and these must betheir portions -- declares the Lord Yahweh.29 Such is the land which you shall apportion as inheritances among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, says the Lord GOD.
"Here are the exits from the city. On the north side, four thousand five hundred cubits are to bemeasured off.30 These are the exits of the City, the gates of which are named after the tribes of Israel. On the north side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits,
The gates of the city are to be named after the tribes of Israel. Three gates to the north: one the gateof Reuben; one the gate of Judah; one the gate of Levi.31 there shall be three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi.
On the east side, there will be four thousand five hundred cubits and three gates: one the gate ofJoseph; one the gate of Benjamin; one the gate of Dan.32 On the east side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits, there shall be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan.
On the south side, four thousand five hundred cubits are to be measured off, and there are to bethree gates: one the gate of Simeon; one the gate of Issachar; one the gate of Zebulun.33 On the south side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits, there shall be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun.
On the west side, there wil be four thousand five hundred cubits and three gates: one the gate ofGad; one the gate of Asher; one the gate of Naphtali.34 On the west side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits, there shall be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali.
Total perimeter: eighteen thousand cubits. "The name of the city in future must be: Yahweh-is-there."'35 The perimeter of the City is eighteen thousand cubits. The name of the City shall henceforth be "The LORD is here."
