Sirach 7

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Do no evil, and evil wil not befal you;	1 Male non fare e male non t'incoglierà;
2 shun wrong, and it wil avoid you.	2 sta lontano dall'iniquo, e i mali s'allontaneranno da te.
3 My child, do not sow in the furrows of wickedness, for fear you have to reap them seven times over.	3 Figliuolo, non seminare il male ne' solchi dell'ingiustizia, e non avrai da mieterne il settuplo.
4 Do not ask the Lord for the highest place, or the king for a seat of honour.	4 Non cercar dal Signore un principato, nè dal re un seggio d'onore.
5 Do not parade your uprightness before the Lord, or your wisdom before the king.	5 Non vantar la tua giustizia dinanzi al Signore, perch'egli conosce il cuore, e non fare il sapiente davanti al re.
6 Do not scheme to be appointed judge, for fear you should not be strong enough to stamp out injustice,for fear of being swayed by someone influential and so of risking the loss of your integrity.	6 Non cercar di diventare giudice, se non hai forza di sradicar le ingiustizie; perchè tu non abbia a temere in faccia al potente, e mettere inciampi alla tua equità.
7 Do not wrong the general body of citizens and so lower yourself in popular esteem.	7 Non peccar contro la cittadinanza, e non ti gettar sul popolo.
8 Do not be drawn to sin twice over, for you wil not go unpunished even once.	8 Non legare insieme due peccati; perchè neppur per un solo non resterai impunito.
9 Do not say, 'God will be impressed by my numerous offerings; when I sacrifice to God Most High, he isbound to accept.'	9 Non esser pusillanime in cuor tuo,
10 Do not be hesitant in prayer; do not neglect to give alms.	10 e non trascurar di pregare e far limosina.
11 Do not laugh at someone who is sad of heart, for he who brings low can lift up high.	11 Non dire: «Iddio guarderà alla moltitudine delle mie offerte, e quand'io offro i miei doni al Dio altissimo, gli accoglierà».
12 Do not make up lies against your brother, nor against a friend either.	12 Non deridere l'uomo nell'amarezza dell'anima [sua], perchè c'è chi umilia ed esalta, Dio che tutto vede.
13 Mind you tel no lies, for no good can come of it.	13 Non coltivar menzogne contro il tuo fratello, nè fare altrettanto verso un amico.
14 Do not talk too much at the gathering of elders, and do not repeat yourself at your prayers.	14 Non voler mai dire nessuna bugia: perchè l'abitudine del mentire non porta bene,
15 Do not shirk tiring jobs or farm work, ordained by the Most High.	15 Non esser ciarliero nella compagnia de' vecchi, e non ripeter le parole nelle tue preghiere.
16 Do not swell the ranks of sinners, remember that the retribution wil not delay.	16 Non odiare il lavoro faticoso, nè l'agricoltura creata dall'Altissimo.
17 Be very humble, since the recompense for the godless is fire and worms.	17 Non ti metter nel branco de' peccatori;
18 Do not barter a friend away for the sake of profit, nor a true brother for the gold of Ophir.	18 ricordati che l'ira [divina] non tarderà.
19 Do not turn against a wise and good wife; her gracious presence is worth more than gold.	19 Umilia profondamente l'anima tua, perchè castigo della carne dell'empio [sarà] il fuoco e il verme.
20 Do not il -treat a slave who is an honest worker, or a wage-earner who is devoted to you.	20 Non peccar contro l'amico che tarda [a darti] il danaro, nè disprezzar per l'oro un fratello carissimo.
21 Love an intel igent slave with al your heart, and do not deny such a slave his freedom.	21 Non ti separar da una donna savia e buona, che nel timor del Signore t'è toccata in sorte; perchè la pudica sua grazia [vai] più dell'oro.
22 Have you cattle? Look after them; if they are making you a profit, keep them.	22 Non maltrattare lo schiavo che con fedeltà lavora, nè il mercenario che ci mette l'anima sua.
23 Have you children? Educate them, from childhood make them bow the neck.	23 Il servo assennato ti sia caro come l'anima tua; non lo fraudar della sua libertà, nè lo lasciar nell'indigenza.
24 Have you daughters? Take care of their bodies, but do not be over-indulgent.	24 Hai bestiami? prendine cura, e se ti son utili, restin presso di te.
25 Marry a daughter off, and you have finished a great work; but give her to a man of sense.	25 Hai figliuoli? istruiscili, e piegali [al giogo] sin dalla loro infanzia.
26 Have you a wife to your liking? Do not turn her out; but if you do not love her, never trust her.	26 Hai figliuole? custodisci il loro corpo, e non mostrare ad esse [troppo] ridente il tuo volto.
27 With al your heart honour your father, never forget the birthpangs of your mother.	27 Marita la figliuola, e avrai fatto un grosso affare, ma dalla a un uomo sensato.
28 Remember that you owe your birth to them; how can you repay them for what they have done for you?	28 Hai una donna secondo il tuo cuore, non la mandar via; ma non ti affidare a una che ti sia odiosa.
29 With al your soul, fear the Lord and revere his priests.	29 Con tutto il tuo cuore onora tuo padre, e non dimenticar le doglie di tua madre.
30 With al your might love him who made you, and do not abandon his ministers.	30 Ricordati che senza di essi non saresti nato, e rendi loro a seconda di quanto t'han dato.
31 Fear the Lord and honour the priest and give him the portion enjoined on you: first-fruits, sacrifice ofreparation, shoulder-gift, sanctification sacrifice, first-fruits of the holy things.	31 Con tutta l'anima tua temi il Signore, e venera i suoi sacerdoti.
32 And also give generously to the poor, so that your blessing may lack nothing.	32 Con tutte le tue forze ama il tuo crcntore, e non abbandonare i suoi ministri.
33 Let your generosity extend to al the living, do not withhold it even from the dead.	33 Venera Iddio con tutta l'anima tua e rispetta i sacerdoti, e purificati con le spalle [delle vittime].
34 Do not turn your back on those who weep, but share the grief of the grief-stricken.	34 E dà ad essi la parte [loro], come t'è stato comandato, le primizie e [la vittima] d'espiazione, e della tua negligenza mondati con poco;
35 Do not shrink from visiting the sick; in this way you wil make yourself loved.	35 l'offerta delle tue spalle, e il sacrifizio di santificazione offrirai al Signore, e le primizie dovute ai santi.
36 In everything you do, remember your end, and you wil never sin.	36 Anche al povero stendi la tua mano, perchè sia completa la tua espiazione e la tua benedizione.
	37 Gradito è il dono a tutti i viventi; e [neppure] al morto non negar la [tua] grazia.
	38 Non mancar di porger conforto a quei chè piangono, e va' con gli afflitti.
	39 Non ti sia grave visitare il malato, perchè con tali cose t'assicurerai l'amore. In tutte le opere tue ricordati della tua fine, e non peccherai in eterno.
