Sirach 7

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Do no evil, and evil wil not befal you;	1 No hagas mal, y el mal no te dominará,
2 shun wrong, and it wil avoid you.	2 sepárate del injusto, y él se alejará de ti.
3 My child, do not sow in the furrows of wickedness, for fear you have to reap them seven times over.	3 No siempres, hijo, en surcos de injusticia, no sea que coseches siete veces más.
4 Do not ask the Lord for the highest place, or the king for a seat of honour.	4 No pidas al Señor la preeminencia, ni al rey silla de gloria.
5 Do not parade your uprightness before the Lord, or your wisdom before the king.	5 No te hagas el justo delante del Señor, ante el rey no te las des de sabio.
6 Do not scheme to be appointed judge, for fear you should not be strong enough to stamp out injustice,for fear of being swayed by someone influential and so of risking the loss of your integrity.	6 No te empeñes en llegar a ser juez, no sea que no puedas extirpar la injusticia, o te dejes influir del poderoso, y pongas un tropiezo en tu entereza.
7 Do not wrong the general body of citizens and so lower yourself in popular esteem.	7 No peques contra la asamblea de la ciudad, ni te rebajes a ti mismo ante el pueblo.
8 Do not be drawn to sin twice over, for you wil not go unpunished even once.	8 En el pecado no te enredes dos veces, pues ni una sola quedarás impune.
9 Do not say, 'God will be impressed by my numerous offerings; when I sacrifice to God Most High, he isbound to accept.'	9 No digas: «Pondrá él sus ojos en la abundancia de mis dones, cuando se los presente al Dios Altísimo, los aceptará».
10 Do not be hesitant in prayer; do not neglect to give alms.	10 No seas en tu plegaria pusilánime, y hacer limosna no descuides.
11 Do not laugh at someone who is sad of heart, for he who brings low can lift up high.	11 No te burles del hombre que vive en aflicción, porque el que humilla, también exalta.
12 Do not make up lies against your brother, nor against a friend either.	12 No trames mentira contra tu hermano ni hagas otro tanto con tu amigo.
13 Mind you tel no lies, for no good can come of it.	13 Propónte no decir mentira alguna, que persistir en ello no lleva a nada bueno.
14 Do not talk too much at the gathering of elders, and do not repeat yourself at your prayers.	14 No seas hablador en la reunión de los ancianos, en tu plegaria no repitas palabras.
15 Do not shirk tiring jobs or farm work, ordained by the Most High.	15 No rehúyas el trabajo penoso, ni la labor del campo que creó el Altísimo.
16 Do not swell the ranks of sinners, remember that the retribution wil not delay.	16 No te incluyas en el grupo de los pecadores, recuerda que la Cólera no se hará esperar.
17 Be very humble, since the recompense for the godless is fire and worms.	17 Humilla hondamente tu alma, que el castigo del impío es fuego y gusanos.
18 Do not barter a friend away for the sake of profit, nor a true brother for the gold of Ophir.	18 No cambies un amigo por dinero, ni un hermano de veras por el oro de Ofir.
19 Do not turn against a wise and good wife; her gracious presence is worth more than gold.	19 No faltes a la mujer sabia y buena, que su gracia vale más que el oro.
20 Do not il -treat a slave who is an honest worker, or a wage-earner who is devoted to you.	20 No maltrates al criado que trabaja fielmente, ni al jornalero que pone su empeño.
21 Love an intel igent slave with al your heart, and do not deny such a slave his freedom.	21 Al criado prudente ame tu alma, y no le prives de la libertad.
22 Have you cattle? Look after them; if they are making you a profit, keep them.	22 ¿Tienes rebaños? Pásales revista; y si te dan ganancia, consérvalos.
23 Have you children? Educate them, from childhood make them bow the neck.	23 ¿Tienes hijos? Adoctrínalos, doblega su cerviz desde su juventud.
24 Have you daughters? Take care of their bodies, but do not be over-indulgent.	24 ¿Tienes hijas? Cuídate de ellas, y no pongas ante ellas cara muy risueña.
25 Marry a daughter off, and you have finished a great work; but give her to a man of sense.	25 Casa a tu hija y habrás hecho una gran cosa, pero dásela a un hombre prudente.
26 Have you a wife to your liking? Do not turn her out; but if you do not love her, never trust her.	26 ¿Tienes una mujer que te gusta? No la despidas, pero si la aborreces, no te confíes a ella.
27 With al your heart honour your father, never forget the birthpangs of your mother.	27 Con todo tu corazón honra a tu padre, y no olvides los dolores de tu madre.
28 Remember that you owe your birth to them; how can you repay them for what they have done for you?	28 Recuerda que por ellos has nacido, ¿cómo les pagarás lo que contigo han hecho?
29 With al your soul, fear the Lord and revere his priests.	29 Con toda tu alma reverencia al Señor, y venera a sus sacerdotes.
30 With al your might love him who made you, and do not abandon his ministers.	30 Con todas tus fuerzas ama al que te hizo, y a sus ministros no abandones.
31 Fear the Lord and honour the priest and give him the portion enjoined on you: first-fruits, sacrifice ofreparation, shoulder-gift, sanctification sacrifice, first-fruits of the holy things.	31 Teme al Señor y honra el sacerdote, dale su porción como te está prescrito: primicias, sacrificios de reparación, pierna de las ofrendas, oblación de santidad y primicias de las cosas sagradas.
32 And also give generously to the poor, so that your blessing may lack nothing.	32 También al pobre tiéndele tu mano, para que tu bendición sea perfecta.
33 Let your generosity extend to al the living, do not withhold it even from the dead.	33 La gracia de tu dádiva llegue a todo viviente, ni siquiera a los muertos les rehúses tu gracia.
34 Do not turn your back on those who weep, but share the grief of the grief-stricken.	34 No te rezagues ante los que lloran, y con los afligidos muéstrate afligido.
35 Do not shrink from visiting the sick; in this way you wil make yourself loved.	35 No descuides visitar al enfermo, que por obras de éstas ganarás amor.
36 In everything you do, remember your end, and you wil never sin.	36 En todas tus acciones ten presente tu fin, y jamás cometerás pecado.
