Sirach 7

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 Do no evil, and evil wil not befal you;	1 Noli facere mala, et mala non te apprehendent;
2 shun wrong, and it wil avoid you.	2 discede ab iniquitate, et deficiet abs te.
3 My child, do not sow in the furrows of wickedness, for fear you have to reap them seven times over.	3 Fili, non semines in sulcis iniustitiae et non metes ea in septuplum.
4 Do not ask the Lord for the highest place, or the king for a seat of honour.	4 Noli quaerere a Domino ducatum neque a rege cathedram honoris.
5 Do not parade your uprightness before the Lord, or your wisdom before the king.	5 Non te iustifices ante Deum, quoniam agnitor cordis ipse est; et penes regem noli velle videri sapiens.
6 Do not scheme to be appointed judge, for fear you should not be strong enough to stamp out injustice,for fear of being swayed by someone influential and so of risking the loss of your integrity.	6 Noli quaerere fieri iudex, nisi valeas virtute irrumpere iniquitates; ne forte extimescas faciem potentis et ponas scandalum in aequitate tua.
7 Do not wrong the general body of citizens and so lower yourself in popular esteem.	7 Non pecces in multitudinem civitatis nec te immittas in populum.
8 Do not be drawn to sin twice over, for you wil not go unpunished even once.	8 Neque alliges duplicia peccata; nec enim in uno eris immunis.
9 Do not say, 'God will be impressed by my numerous offerings; when I sacrifice to God Most High, he isbound to accept.'	9 Noli esse pusillanimis in oratione tua;
10 Do not be hesitant in prayer; do not neglect to give alms.	10 exorare et facere eleemosynam ne despicias.
11 Do not laugh at someone who is sad of heart, for he who brings low can lift up high.	11 Ne dicas: “ In multitudine munerum meorum respiciet Deus et, offerente me Deo altissimo, munera mea suscipiet ”.
12 Do not make up lies against your brother, nor against a friend either.	12 Non irrideas hominem in amaritudine animae; est enim, qui humiliat et exaltat, circumspector Deus.
13 Mind you tel no lies, for no good can come of it.	13 Noli arare mendacium adversus fratrem tuum neque in amicum similiter facias.
14 Do not talk too much at the gathering of elders, and do not repeat yourself at your prayers.	14 Noli velle mentiri omne mendacium, assiduitas enim illius non est bona.
15 Do not shirk tiring jobs or farm work, ordained by the Most High.	15 Noli verbosus esse in multitudine presbyterorum et non iteres verbum in oratione tua.
16 Do not swell the ranks of sinners, remember that the retribution wil not delay.	16 Non oderis laboriosa opera et rusticationem creatam ab Altissimo.
17 Be very humble, since the recompense for the godless is fire and worms.	17 Non te reputes in multitudine indisciplinatorum;
18 Do not barter a friend away for the sake of profit, nor a true brother for the gold of Ophir.	18 memento irae, quoniam non tardabit.
19 Do not turn against a wise and good wife; her gracious presence is worth more than gold.	19 Humilia valde spiritum tuum, quoniam vindicta carnis impii ignis et vermis.
20 Do not il -treat a slave who is an honest worker, or a wage-earner who is devoted to you.	20 Noli commutare amicum cum pecunia neque fratrem carissimum cum auro Ophir.
21 Love an intel igent slave with al your heart, and do not deny such a slave his freedom.	21 Noli discedere a muliere sensata et bona, quam sortitus es in timore Domini; gratia enim verecundiae illius super aurum.
22 Have you cattle? Look after them; if they are making you a profit, keep them.	22 Non laedas servum operantem in veritate neque mercennarium dantem animam suam.
23 Have you children? Educate them, from childhood make them bow the neck.	23 Servus sensatus sit tibi dilectus quasi anima tua; non defraudes illum libertate neque inopem derelinquas illum.
24 Have you daughters? Take care of their bodies, but do not be over-indulgent.	24 Pecora tibi sunt? Attende illis, et, si sunt utilia, perseverent apud te.
25 Marry a daughter off, and you have finished a great work; but give her to a man of sense.	25 Filii tibi sunt? Erudi illos et curva a pueritia cervicem illorum.
26 Have you a wife to your liking? Do not turn her out; but if you do not love her, never trust her.	26 Filiae tibi sunt? Serva corpus illarum et non ostendas hilarem faciem tuam ad illas.
27 With al your heart honour your father, never forget the birthpangs of your mother.	27 Trade filiam, et grande opus feceris, et homini sensato da illam.
28 Remember that you owe your birth to them; how can you repay them for what they have done for you?	28 Mulier si est tibi secundum animam tuam, non proicias illam, sed odibili non credas teipsum. In toto corde tuo
29 With al your soul, fear the Lord and revere his priests.	29 honora patrem tuum et gemitus matris tuae ne obliviscaris.
30 With al your might love him who made you, and do not abandon his ministers.	30 Memento quoniam, nisi per illos, natus non fuisses; et quid retribues illis, quomodo et illi tibi?
31 Fear the Lord and honour the priest and give him the portion enjoined on you: first-fruits, sacrifice ofreparation, shoulder-gift, sanctification sacrifice, first-fruits of the holy things.	31 In tota anima tua time Dominum et sacerdotes illius sanctifica.
32 And also give generously to the poor, so that your blessing may lack nothing.	32 In omni virtute tua dilige eum, qui te fecit, et ministros eius ne derelinquas.
33 Let your generosity extend to al the living, do not withhold it even from the dead.	33 Honora Deum ex tota anima tua et honorifica sacerdotes.
34 Do not turn your back on those who weep, but share the grief of the grief-stricken.	34 Da illis partem, sicut mandatum est tibi, primitiarum et purgationis et de neglegentia
35 Do not shrink from visiting the sick; in this way you wil make yourself loved.	35 et armum in oblationem et sacrificium sanctificationis et primitias sanctorum.
36 In everything you do, remember your end, and you wil never sin.	36 Et pauperi porrige manum tuam, ut perficiatur propitiatio et benedictio tua.
	37 Gratia dati in conspectu omnis viventis, sed et mortuo non prohibeas gratiam.
	38 Non desis plorantibus in consolatione et cum lugentibus luge.
	39 Non te pigeat visitare infirmum, ex his enim in dilectione firmaberis.
	40 In omnibus operibus tuis memorare novissima tua et in aeternum non peccabis.
