Sirach 48

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 Allora sorse Elia, un profeta come il fuoco, la cui parola ardeva come una fiamma.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 Egli portò su di essi la carestia, col suo zelo li ha ridotti di numero.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Con la parola del Signore ha chiuso il cielo e così fece scendere per tre volte il fuoco.
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 Hai avuto tanta gloria, o Elia, per i tuoi miracoli! Chi può vantarsi al pari di te?
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 Hai fatto sorgere un cadavere dalla morte e dagl'inferi, con la parola dell'Altissimo.
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 Hai fatto scendere dei re nella perdizione e uomini gloriosi dal loro letto.
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 Hai sentito al Sinai il rimprovero, e all'Oreb il giudizio di condanna.
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 Hai unto dei re per la vendetta e profeti che ti fossero successori.
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 Sei stato preso in un turbine di fuoco, con un carro di cavalli infuocati.
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 Di te è scritto che verrà il tuo tempo, per calmare l'ira prima del furore, per volgere il cuore del padre verso il figlio e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe.
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 Beati quelli che ti hanno visto e sono morti nell'amore, perché è certo che noi vivremo.
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Quando Elia fu coperto da un turbine Eliseo fu ripieno del suo spirito; nei suoi giorni non tremò per nessun principe, nessuno l'ha potuto sottomettere.
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Niente era per lui difficile, anche sepolto, il suo cadavere profetizzò.
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 Nella sua vita fece prodigi e dopo morte operò meraviglie.
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 Con tutto ciò il popolo non si è convertito, non hanno rinunciato ai loro peccati, fino a quando sono stati scacciati dalla loro terra e sono stati dispersi in ogni nazione.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 E' stato lasciato un piccolo popolo e un principe nella casa di Davide. Alcuni di loro hanno fatto ciò che piace a Dio, altri hanno invece moltiplicato i loro peccati.
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 Ezechia ha fortificato la sua città e ha portato l'acqua nel suo interno, ha scavato col ferro la roccia, ha costruito dei pozzi per l'acqua.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 Nei suoi giorni salì Sennacherib, che poi inviò Rabsake; sollevò la mano sopra Sion, e si vantò nella sua superbia.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Allora tremarono loro i cuori e le mani, hanno avuto le doglie come partorienti;
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 hanno invocato il Signore misericordioso stendendo a lui le loro mani; il Santo dal cielo li ha subito esauditi, li ha riscattati per mano d'Isaia.
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 Ha colpito l'accampamento degli Assiri, il suo angelo li ha spazzati via,
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 perché Ezechia ha fatto quanto piace al Signore, ha perseverato nelle vie di Davide suo padre, come gli aveva indicato il profeta Isaia, grande e verace nella sua visione.
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 Nei suoi giorni fu trattenuto il sole, egli prolungò la vita del re.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Con la potenza dell'ispirazione ha visto le cose ultime e ha consolato gli afflitti di Sion.
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 Ha mostrato il futuro sino alla fine, le cose nascoste prima che accadessero.
