Sirach 48

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 Después surgió el profeta Elías como fuego, su palabra abrasaba como antorcha.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 El atrajo sobre ellos el hambre, y con su celo los diezmó.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Por la palabra del Señor cerró los cielos, e hizo también caer fuego tres veces.
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 ¡Qué glorioso fuiste, Elías, en tus portentos! ¿quién puede jactarse de ser igual que tú?
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 Tú que despertaste a un cadáver de la muerte y del seol, por la palabra del Altísimo;
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 que hiciste caer a reyes en la ruina, y a hombres insignes fuera de su lecho;
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 oíste en el Sinaí la reprensión, y en el Horeb los decretos de castigo;
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 ungiste reyes para tomar venganza, y profetas para ser tus sucesores;
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 en torbellino de fuego fuiste arrebatado en carro de caballos ígneos;
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 fuiste designado en los reproches futuros, para calmar la ira antes que estallara, para hacer volver el corazón de los padres a los hijos, y restablecer las tribus de Jacob.
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 Felices aquellos que te vieron y que se durmieron en el amor, que nosotros también viviremos sin duda.
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Cuando Elías en el torbellino quedó envuelto, Eliseo se llenó de su espíritu. En sus días no fue zarandeado por príncipe, y no pudo dominarle nadie.
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Nada era imposible para él, hasta en el sueño de la muerte profetizó su cuerpo.
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 Durante su vida hizo prodigios, y después de su muerte fueron admirables sus obras.
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 Con todo esto, el pueblo no se arrepintió, ni de sus pecados se apartaron, hasta que fueron deportados de la tierra y esparcidos por el mundo entero.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 Sólo quedó un pueblo reducido, con un príncipe de la casa de David. Algunos de ellos hicieron lo agradable a Dios, pero otros multiplicaron los pecados.
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 Fortificó Ezequías su ciudad y metió el agua dentro de ella; con el hierro horadó la roca y construyó cisternas para el agua.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 En sus días, subió Senaquerib, que envió por delante a Rabsaqués; éste partió, levantó contra Sión la mano, y se engrió en su altanería.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Temblaron entonces corazones y manos, y sufrieron dolores cual mujeres en parto.
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 Invocaron al Señor misericordioso, tendiendo sus manos hacia él. Y el Santo, desde el cielo, les escuchó al instante, y los rescató por mano de Isaías.
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 Hirió el real de los asirios, y su Angel los exterminó.
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 Porque hizo Ezequías lo que agrada al Señor, y se mantuvo firme en los caminos de David su padre, como le ordenó el profeta Isaías, el grande y digno de fe en sus visiones.
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 En sus días el sol retrocedió, y él prolongó la vida del rey.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Con el poder del espíritu vio el fin de los tiempos, y consoló a los afligidos de Sión.
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 Hasta la eternidad reveló el porvenir y las cosas ocultas antes que sucedieran.
