Sirach 48

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 Poi, come fuoco, sorse il profeta Elia, la parola del quale era ardente come fiaccola.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 Egli fece venire contro di essi la fame: quelli che per invidia lo perseguitavano furon ridotti a pochi, per non poter sopportare i precetti del Signore.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Per la parola del Signore chiuse il cielo, e dal cielo fece cadere tre volte il fuoco.
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 Così Elia si rese glorioso coi suoi miracoli. E chi può vantarsene come te,
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 che togliesti un morto dall'inferno e dal dominio della morte, colla parola del Signore Dio,
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 che abbattesti i re fino allo sterminio, ne fiaccasti senza fatica la potenza, (e facesti cadere) dal loro letto gli orgogliosi,
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 che ascoltasti sul Sinai il giudizio e sull'Oreb i decreti di vendetta,
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 che ungesti dei re esecutori di vendette e dei profeti dopo di te, come tuoi successori,
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 che fosti rapito in un turbine di fuoco su cocchio tirato da cavalli di fuoco,
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 che sei scritto nei decreti dei tempi, per placare lo sdegno del Signore, conciliare il cuore del padre col figlio e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe?
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 Beati quelli che ti videro ed ebbero la gloria di averti amico.
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Infatti noi vi viamo in questa vita solamente, dopo la morte non sarà tale il nostro nome.
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Or Elia disparve nel turbine, ed Eliseo ebbe la pienezza dello spirito di lui. In vita non ebbe paura di nessun principe, e nessuno potè vincerlo colla potenza.
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 Nessuna cosa ebbe potere su lui, ed anche morto il suo corpo profetò.
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 Da vivo fece straordinari prodigi, da morto fece cose maravigliose.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 Nonostante tutto questo il popolo non fece penitenza, non lasciarono i loro peccati, finché non furon cacciati dal loro paese e dispersi per tutta la terra.
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 E restò pochissima gente e un principe della casa di David.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 Alcuni di essi fecero ciò che piaceva a Dio, altri invece commisero molti peccati.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Ezechia fortificò la città, condusse l'acqua in mezzo di essa, tagliò a forza di ferro la rupe e costruì dei serbatoi per l'acqua.
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 Ai tempi di lui montò Sennacherib, mandò il Rabsace, alzò la mano contro di loro, steso la mano contro Sion, fatto superbo dalla sua potenza.
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 Allora ad essi tremarono i cuori, caddero le braccia, e provarono dolori come donne partorienti,
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 e invocarono il Signore misericordioso, e stesero le loro mani, le alzarono ai cielo, e il santo Signore Iddio ascoltò subito la loro voce.
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 Non si ricordò più dei loro peccati, non li abbandonò ai loro nemici, ma li purificò per mezzo del santo profeta Isaia.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Egli percosse il campo degli Assiri e l'angelo del Signore li sterminò;
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 perchè Ezechia fece ciò che piaceva a Dio, e procedè coraggiosamente nelle vie di David suo padre, secondo le raccomandazioni d'Isaia, gran profeta e fedele nel cospetto di Dio.
	26 Al tempo di lui il sole tornò indietro, ed egli prolungò la vita del re.
	27 Egli con grande spirito vide gli ultimi tempi e con solò chi piangeva in Sion; fino alla fine dei tempi mostrò l'avvenire e le cose nascoste prima che avvenissero.
