Sirach 48

1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 E sorse il profeta Elia come un fuoco, e le parole di lui erano come ardente facella.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 Egli fece venir contro di essi la fame, e quelli, che per invidia il perseguitavano, si ridussero a pochi; perocché non potevan coloro sopportare i comandamenti del Signore.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Egli colla parola del Signore chiuse il cielo, e tre volte fece dal cielo cadere il fuoco:
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 Cosi Elia si rendè glorioso co' suoi miracoli. E chi è, che possa gloriarsene al pari di te.
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 Tu in virtù della parola di Dio Signore traesti un morto dall'inferno, e dalla giurisdizione della morte.
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 Tu abbattesti i regi, e con facilità, conquidesti la possanza di essi, e i gloriosi (facesti cadere) da' loro letti.
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 Tu ascoltasti sul Sina il giudizio, e sull'Horeb i decreti di vendetta.
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 Tu ungi dei regi, che faccian vendetta, e lasci dopo di te de' profeti tuoi successori.
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 Tu fosti rapito in un turbine di fuoco sopra un cocchio tirato da cavalli di fuoco.
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 Tu sei scritto ne' decreti dei tempi, come quegli, che placherai l'ira del Signore, riunirai il cuore del padre col figlio, e rimetterai in piedi le tribù di Giacobbe.
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 Beati quei, che ti videro, ed ebber la gloria di averti per amico;
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Perocché noi questa sola vita viviamo, e dopo la morte tal non sarà il nostro nome
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Or Elia fu involto nel turbino, ed Eliseo ebbe la pienezza del suo spinto; egli ne' suoi tempi non temè alcun principe, e nissun lo vinse colla potenza:
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 Né parola alcuna lo vinse, e il corpo morto di lui profetò.
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 Nel tempo di sua vita operò prodigj, e fece cose mirabili nella sua morte.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 Ma per tutto qnesto il popolo non si pentì, e non lasciarono i loro peccati fino a tanto, che furono cacciati dal loro paese, e dispersi per tutta la terra:
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 E restò pochissima gente, e un prìncipe della casa di David.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 Alcuni di essi fecero quello, che Dio voleva; altri poi fecer molti peccati.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Ezechia fortificò la città, e condusse acqua nel contro di essa, e scavò un masso a forza di ferro, e vi fece una cisterna per l'acqua.
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 A tempo di lui venne Sennacherib, e spedi Rabsace, ed egli alzò la mano contro i Giudei, e la mano stese contro Sionne, di venuto superbo per le sue forze.
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 Allora furon commossi i loro cuori, e cadder loro le braccia, e dolori provarono come di donna, che partorisce.
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 E invocarono il Signore misericordioso, e steser le mani, e le alzarono verso il cielo, e il Signore Dio santo udì tosto le voci loro.
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 Né si ricordò più de' loro peccati, e non li dette in balìa de' loro nemici, ma li purificò per mezzo di Isaia profeta santo.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Egli dissipò il campo degli Assirj, e l'Angelo del Signore gli sterminò:
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 Perché Ezechia fece quello, che Dio voleva, e camminò nelle vie di David suo padre, come aveva a lui raccomandato Isaia profeta grande, e fedele nel cospetto del Signore.
	26 A tempo di lui il sole tornò in dietro, ed egli prolungò la vita al re.
	27 Egli con grande spirito vide gli ultimi tempi, e consolò i piangenti di Sion.
	28 Egli dimostrò le cose, che hanno da essere sino all'eternità, e le cose nascoste prima, che succedessero.
