Sirach 48

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 Allora sorse Elia profeta, come un fuoco; la sua parola bruciava come fiaccola.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 Egli fece venire su di loro la carestia e con zelo li ridusse a pochi.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Per la parola del Signore chiuse il cielo e così fece scendere per tre volte il fuoco.
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 Come ti rendesti glorioso, Elia, con i tuoi prodigi! E chi può vantarsi di esserti uguale?
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 Tu hai fatto sorgere un defunto dalla morte e dagl’inferi, per la parola dell’Altissimo;
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 tu hai fatto precipitare re nella perdizione, e uomini gloriosi dal loro letto.
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 Tu sul Sinai hai ascoltato parole di rimprovero, sull’Oreb sentenze di condanna.
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 Hai unto re per la vendetta e profeti come tuoi successori.
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 Tu sei stato assunto in un turbine di fuoco, su un carro di cavalli di fuoco;
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 tu sei stato designato a rimproverare i tempi futuri, per placare l’ira prima che divampi, per ricondurre il cuore del padre verso il figlio e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe.
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 Beati coloro che ti hanno visto e si sono addormentati nell’amore, perché è certo che anche noi vivremo.
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Appena Elia fu avvolto dal turbine, Eliseo fu ripieno del suo spirito; nei suoi giorni non tremò davanti a nessun principe e nessuno riuscì a dominarlo.
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Nulla fu troppo grande per lui, e nel sepolcro il suo corpo profetizzò.
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 Nella sua vita compì prodigi, e dopo la morte meravigliose furono le sue opere.
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 Con tutto ciò il popolo non si convertì e non rinnegò i suoi peccati, finché non fu deportato dal proprio paese e disperso su tutta la terra. Rimase soltanto un piccolissimo popolo e un principe della casa di Davide.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 Alcuni di loro fecero ciò che è gradito a Dio, ma altri moltiplicarono i peccati.
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 Ezechia fortificò la sua città e portò l’acqua nel suo interno; con il ferro scavò un canale nella roccia e costruì cisterne per l’acqua.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 Nei suoi giorni Sennàcherib fece una spedizione e mandò Rapsache; alzò la sua mano contro Sion e si vantò spavaldamente nella sua superbia.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Allora si agitarono loro i cuori e le mani, soffrirono come le partorienti.
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 Invocarono il Signore misericordioso, tendendo le loro mani verso di lui. Il Santo li ascoltò subito dal cielo e li liberò per mezzo di Isaia.
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 Egli colpì l’accampamento degli Assiri, e il suo angelo li sterminò,
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 perché Ezechia aveva fatto quanto è gradito al Signore e aveva seguito con fermezza le vie di Davide, suo padre, come gli aveva indicato il profeta Isaia, grande e degno di fede nella sua visione.
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 Nei suoi giorni il sole retrocedette ed egli prolungò la vita del re.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Con grande ispirazione vide gli ultimi tempi e consolò gli afflitti di Sion.
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 Egli manifestò il futuro sino alla fine dei tempi, le cose nascoste prima che accadessero.
