Sirach 48

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 - E sorse Elia, un profeta simile a fuoco, la cui parola era ardente come una fiaccola.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 Egli fece venir la fame contro di loro, e quei che con la loro malvagità lo movevano a sdegno, furono ridotti a pochi, giacché non potevano sopportare i comandamenti di Dio.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Con la parola del Signore chiuse il cielo [perchè non piovesse], e tre volte dal cielo fece cadere il fuoco.
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 Cotanto fu magnificato Elia ne' suoi miracoli! E chi può gloriarsi così come te?
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 Tu che un morto traesti fuori dagli Inferi, e da' dominii della morte con la parola dell'Altissimo;
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 tu che i re precipitasti in rovina e agevolmente ne spezzasti la potenza, e personaggi illustri [rovesciati] dai loro letti [nella tomba];
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 tu che ascoltasti sul Sina il giudizio [del Signore], e sull'Horeb i decreti di vendetta;
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 tu che ungesti de' re per [compier] la vendetta, e profeti a tuoi successori;
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 tu che fosti rapito in un turbine di fuoco, sur un carro da' cavalli di fuoco;
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 tu che fosti designato ne' decreti de' tempi, per placare l'ira del Signore [prima che divampi], e riconciliare il cuor del padre verso il figliuolo, e ristabilire la tribù di Giacobbe.
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 Beati quelli che ti videro, e della tua amicizia s'onorarono!
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Perchè noi abbiamo soltanto la vita, e dopo morte non sarà tale il nostro nome.
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Elia fu ravvolto nel turbine, e in Eliseo si riversò pienamente lo spirito di lui. A' suoi giorni egli non ebbe paura di principe alcuno, e nessuno non lo vinse con la potenza.
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 Nessuna cosa fu al di sopra di lui: morto, il suo corpo profetò [ancora]!
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 Nel tempo di sua vita fece prodigi, e in morte operò meraviglie.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 Con tuttociò non si pentì il popolo, e non si ritrassero da' loro peccati; fino a che furon cacciati dalla propria patria, e dispersi per tutta la terra.
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 E restò pochissima gente, e un principe della casa di David.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 Alcuni d'essi fecero ciò che piaceva a Dio, altri invece commisero molti peccati.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Ezechia fortificò la sua città, e portò l'acqua nel mezzo di essa; e scavò la roccia col ferro, e costruì serbatoi per le acque.
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 suoi giorni sorse Sennacherib, e spedì Rabsace: e questi levò la sua mano contro di loro, e alzò la sua mano contro Sion, e s'insuperbì per la sua potenza.
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 Allora furon scossi i cuori e le mani loro, e provaron doglie come donne partorienti.
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 E invocarono il Signore misericordioso, e stendendo le loro mani le alzarono al ciclo. E il Signore Iddio santo ascoltò tosto [dal cielo] il loro grido,
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 non si ricordò de' loro peccati, nè gli abbandonò a' loro nemici, e li salvò per mano d'Isaia, profeta santo.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Mise in rotta il campo degli Assiri, e l'angelo del Signore gli stritolò.
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 Perchè Ezechia fece ciò che piaceva al Signore, e camminò con fermezza nella via di David suo padre, la quale gli raccomandò Isaia il profeta, grande e fedele al cospetto di Dio.
	26 tempo di lui tornò indietro il sole, ed egli prolungò la vita al re.
	27 Con potente spirito vide gli ultimi [templi], e consolò i piangenti in Sion.
	28 Annunziò le cose future sino alla fine de' secoli, e le cose nascoste prima che avvenissero.
