Sirach 48

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.	1 Después surgió como un fuego el profeta Elías, su palabra quemaba como una antorcha.
2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.	2 El atrajo el hambre sobre ellos y con su celo los diezmó.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.	3 Por la palabra del Señor, cerró el cielo, y también hizo caer tres veces fuego de lo alto.
4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -	4 ¡Qué glorioso te hiciste, Elías, con tus prodigios! ¿Quién puede jactarse de ser igual a ti?
5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;	5 Tú despertaste a un hombre de la muerte y de la morada de los muertos, por la palabra de Altísimo.
6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;	6 Tú precipitaste a reyes en la ruina y arrojaste de su lecho a hombres insignes:
7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;	7 tú escuchaste un reproche en el Sinaí y en el Horeb una sentencia de condenación;
8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;	8 tú ungiste reyes para ejercer la venganza y profetas para ser tus sucesores
9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;	9 tú fuiste arrebatado en un torbellino de fuego por un carro con caballos de fuego.
10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.	10 De ti está escrito que en los castigos futuros aplacarás la ira antes que estalle, para hacer volver el corazón de los padres hacia los hijos y restablecer las tribus de Jacob.
11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.	11 ¡Felices los que te verán y los que se durmieron en el amor, porque también nosotros poseeremos la vida!
12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.	12 Cuando Elías fue llevado en un torbellino, Eliseo quedó lleno de su espíritu. Durante su vida ningún jefe lo hizo temblar, y nadie pudo someterlo.
13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.	13 Nada era demasiado difícil para él y hasta en la tumba profetizó su cuerpo.
14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.	14 En su vida, hizo prodigios y en su muerte, realizó obras admirables.
15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;	15 A pesar de todo esto, el pueblo no se convirtió ni se apartó de sus pecados. hasta que fue deportado lejos de su país, y dispersado por toda la tierra.
16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.	16 No quedó nada más que un pueblo muy pequeño, con un jefe de la casa de David. Algunos de ellos hicieron lo que agrada a Dios, pero otros multiplicaron sus pecados.
17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.	17 Ezequías fortificó su ciudad e hizo llegar el agua dentro de sus muros, con el hierro horadó la roca y construyó cisternas para las aguas.
18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.	18 En su tiempo, atacó Senaquerib y envió delante de él a Rabsaqués, que levantó la mano contra Sión y se jactó con arrogancia.
19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,	19 Temblaron entonces los corazones y las manos y sufrieron como mujeres en el parto,
20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;	20 pero invocaron al Señor misericordioso, tendiendo sus manos hacia él. El Santo los escuchó en seguida desde el cielo y los libró por medio de Isaías,
21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.	21 hirió el campamento de los asirios y su Angel los exterminó.
22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.	22 Porque Ezequías hizo lo que agrada al Señor y se mantuvo firme en el camino de David, su padre, como se lo ordenó el profeta Isaías, el grande y digno de fe en sus visiones.
23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.	23 En su tiempo, el sol retrocedió, para prolongar la vida del rey.
24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,	24 Con gran espíritu, vio el fin de los tiempos, consoló a los afligidos de Sión,
25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.	25 y anunció el porvenir hasta la eternidad y las cosas ocultas antes que sucedieran.
