Sirach 40

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 A hard lot has been created for human beings, a heavy yoke lies on the children of Adam from the daythey come out of their mother's womb, till the day they return to the mother of them al .	1 Uma grande inquietação foi imposta a todos os homens, e um pesado jugo acabrunha os filhos de Adão, desde o dia em que saem do seio materno, até o dia em que são sepultados no seio da mãe comum:
2 What fills them with foreboding and their hearts with fear is dread of the day of death.	2 seus pensamentos, os temores de seu coração, a apreensão do que esperam, e o dia em que tudo acaba, 3. desde o que se senta num trono magnífico, até o que se deita sobre a terra e a cinza;
3 From the one who sits on a glorious throne to the wretch in dust and ashes,
4 from the one who wears purple and a crown to the one dressed in sacking, al is fury and jealousy,turmoil and unrest, fear of death, rivalry, strife.	4 desde o que veste púrpura e ostenta coroa, até aquele que só se cobre de pano. Furor, ciúme, inquietação, agitação, temor da morte, cólera persistente e querelas.
5 And even at night while he rests on his bed his sleep only gives a new twist to his worries:	5 E na hora de repousar no leito, o sono da noite perturba-lhe as idéias.
6 scarcely has he lain down to rest, when in his sleep, as if in broad daylight, he is troubled withnightmares, like one who has escaped from a battle,	6 Ele repousa um pouco, tão pouco que é como se não repousasse; e no mesmo sono, como uma sentinela durante o dia,
7 and at the moment of rescue he wakes up, amazed that there was nothing to be afraid of!	7 é perturbado pelas visões de seu espírito, como um homem que foge do combate. No momento em que (se julga) em lugar seguro, ele se levanta e admira-se do seu vão temor.
8 For al creatures, human and animal -- and seven times more for sinners-	8 Assim acontece a toda criatura, desde os homens até os animais. Mas para os pecadores é sete vezes mais.
9 there is death and blood and strife and the sword, disasters, famine, affliction, plague.	9 Além do mais, a morte, o sangue, as querelas, a espada, as opressões, a fome, a ruína e os flagelos 10. foram todos criados para os maus, e foi por causa deles que veio o dilúvio.
10 These things were al created for the wicked, and the Flood came because of them.
11 Al that comes from the earth returns to the earth, and what comes from the water returns to the sea.	11 Tudo o que vem da terra voltará à terra, como todas as águas regressam ao mar.
12 Al bribery and injustice wil be blotted out, but good faith wil stand for ever.	12 Todo presente e todo bem mal adquirido perecerão; a boa fé, porém, subsistirá eternamente.
13 Il -gotten wealth will vanish like a torrent, like the single thunder-clap that heralds rain.	13 As riquezas dos injustos secarão como uma torrente; elas assemelham-se a uma trovoada que estala na chuva.
14 When he opens his hand, he rejoices, by the same token, sinners come to ruin.	14 O homem se regozija quando abre a mão, mas no fim os prevaricadores serão aniquilados.
15 The sprigs of the godless wil not make many branches, tainted roots find only hard rock.	15 A posteridade dos ímpios não multiplicará os ramos; as raízes impuras agitam-se no alto de um rochedo.
16 The reed that grows by every lake and river's edge is the first plant to be uprooted.	16 A vegetação que cresce à beira das águas, ao longo de um rio, será arrancada antes de todas as ervas dos campos.
17 Charity is a very paradise of blessing and almsgiving endures for ever.	17 A beneficência é como um paraíso abençoado, e a misericórdia permanecerá eternamente.
18 For a person of private means and one who works hard, life is pleasant, better off than either, one whofinds a treasure.	18 Doce é a vida do operário que se basta a si próprio; vivendo assim, encontrarás um tesouro.
19 Children and the founding of a city perpetuate a name: more esteemed than either, a perfect wife.	19 Os filhos e a fundação de uma cidade dão firmeza a um nome, mas é mais estimada que um e outro uma mulher sem mácula.
20 Wine and music cheer the heart; better than either, the love of wisdom.	20 O vinho e a música alegram o coração: sobre um e outro, porém, prevalece o amor da sabedoria.
21 Flute and harp add sweetness to a song; better than either, a melodious voice.	21 A flauta e a harpa emitem um som harmonioso; a língua suave, porém, supera uma e outra.
22 The eye longs for grace and beauty; better than either, the green of spring corn.	22 A graça e a beleza são atraentes para o olhar; mais do que uma e outra é a vegetação dos campos.
23 Friend or comrade -- it is always wel met; better than either, a wife and husband.	23 Um amigo ajuda a seu amigo no momento oportuno. Mais do que um e outro, uma mulher ajuda seu marido.
24 Brothers and al ies are good in times of trouble; better than either, almsgiving to the rescue.	24 Os irmãos são um socorro no tempo da tribulação. Mais do que eles, porém, a misericórdia liberta.
25 Gold and silver wil steady your feet; more esteemed than either, good advice.	25 O ouro e a prata são bases sólidas. Um bom conselho, porém, supera um e outra.
26 Money and strength make a confident heart; better than either, the fear of the Lord. With fear of theLord, nothing is lacking: no need to seek for other help.	26 As riquezas e as energias elevam o coração; o temor do Senhor, porém, sobrepuja umas e outras.
27 Fear of the Lord is a paradise of blessing, a better protection than the highest reputation.	27 Nada falta àquele que tem o temor ao Senhor; e com ele não há necessidade de outro auxílio.
28 My child, do not live by sponging off others, better be dead than be a sponger.	28 O temor ao Senhor é-lhe como um paraíso abençoado; ele está revestido de uma glória que supera toda glória.
29 A life spent in eyeing someone else's table cannot be accounted a life at al . Other people's fooddefiles the gul et; a wise, wel -brought-up person wil beware of doing this.	29 Meu filho, não leves nunca uma vida de mendigo, pois mais vale morrer que mendigar.
30 What a sponger says may sound very sweet but in his bel y there burns a fire.	30 Quando um homem olha para a mesa de outro, sua vida não é realmente vida, na obsessão do alimento, porque se nutre dos víveres de outrem;
