Sirach 37

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Any friend wil say, 'I am your friend too,' but some friends are friends only in name.	1 Ogni amico dirà: « Io ho stretto teco amicizia ». Ma ci son degli amici di nome soltanto. Non c'è in questo uno strazio che s'avvicina alla morte?
2 Is it not a deadly sorrow when a comrade or a friend turns enemy?	2 Il compagno, l'amico si cambiano in nemici.
3 O evil inclination, why were you created, to cover the earth with deceit?	3 O presunzione scelleratissima, donde sei uscita a ricoprir la terra di tal malvagità e perfidia?
4 One kind of comrade congratulates a friend in prosperity but in time of trouble appears on the otherside.	4 Un amico gode coll'amico nell'allegria, e sarà contro di lui nel tempo della tribolazione.
5 One kind of comrade genuinely feels for a friend and when it comes to a fight, springs to arms.	5 Un amico s'affligge coll'amico a causa del suo ventre, e imbraccia lo scudo contro il nemico.
6 Do not forget the genuine friend, do not push him out of mind once you are rich.	6 Non t'esca mai dal cuore il tuo amico, e non lo dimenticare in mezzo alle tue ricchezze.
7 Any adviser wil offer advice, but some are governed by self-interest.	7 Non prender consiglio da chi t'insidia, nascondi i tuoi disegni a chi t'invidia.
8 Beware of someone who offers advice; first find out what he wants himself- since his advice coincideswith his own interest -- in case he has designs on you	8 Ogni consigliere dà il suo consiglio, ma v'è chi lo dà a suo tornaconto.
9 and tel s you, 'You are on the right road,' but stands wel clear to see what will happen to you.	9 Guardati dal consigliere: prima rifletti se ha bisogno di qualche cosa, perchè anche lui vi penserà dentro di sè;
10 Do not consult anyone who looks at you askance, conceal your plans from people jealous of you.	10 che forse ti ficcherà un piuolo in terra, e ti dirà:
11 Do not consult a woman about her rival, or a coward about war, a merchant about prices, or a buyerabout sel ing, anyone mean about gratitude, or anyone selfish about kindness, a lazy fel ow about any sort ofwork, or a casual worker about finishing a job, an idle servant about a major undertaking -- do not rely on thesefor any advice.	11 « La tua strada è buona » e ti starà di faccia a vedere quel che avvenga.
12 But have constant recourse to some devout person, whom you know to be a keeper of thecommandments, whose soul matches your own, and who, if you go wrong, wil be sympathetic.	12 Tratta di santità coll'uomo senza religione, di giustizia coll'iniquo, colla donna tratta della sua emula, col pauroso di guerra, col mercante tratta di trasporti, con chi vuol comprare di vendita, coll'invidioso di ringraziamenti,
13 Finally, stick to the advice your own heart gives you, no one can be truer to you than that;	13 coll'empio di pietà, col disonesto di onestà, col lavoratore di campagna di qualunque lavoro,
14 since a person's soul often gives a clearer warning than seven watchmen perched on a watchtower.	14 col mercenario annuale del lavoro dell'annata, col servo pigro di grande lavoro. Non dar retta a costoro, qualunque consiglio diano;
15 And besides all this beg the Most High to guide your steps into the truth.	15 ma frequenta l'uomo pio, chiunque tu avrai conosciuto timorato di Dio,
16 Reason should be the basis for every activity, reflection must come before any undertaking.	16 e che ha un'anima conforme alla tua, e che, se tu vacillassi nelle tenebre, abbia compassione di te. 1
17 Thoughts are rooted in the heart, and this sends out four branches:	17 Formati dentro di te un cuore di buon consiglio, perchè non puoi averne un altro migliore di quello.
18 good and evil, life and death, and mistress of them always is the tongue.	18 L'anima d'un uomo santo qualche volta fa conoscere il vero meglio di sette sentinelle che stanno alle vedette in luogo elevato.
19 One kind of person is clever at teaching others, yet is no good whatever to himself;	19 Ma in tutte queste cose prega l'Altissimo, affinchè Egli guidi i tuoi passi nella verità.
20 another, very eloquent, is detested and ends by starving to death,	20 La parola di verità preceda ogni tua opera, e il consiglio sicuro ogni tua azione.
21 not having won the favour of the Lord, and being destitute of al wisdom.	21 La parola cattiva altera il cuore, dal quale nascono quattro cose: il bene e il male, la vita e la morte, cose che son sempre in potere della lingua. Vi sono degli uomini abili a istruire molti e buoni a nulla per l'anima propria.
22 Another considers himself wise and proclaims his intel ectual conclusions as certainties.	22 L'uomo prudente istruisce molti e dà consolazione alla sua anima.
23 But the truly wise instructs his people and his intel ectual conclusions are certainties.	23 Chi affetta sapienza si rende odioso, e in ogni cosa resterà a mani vuote.
24 The wise is showered with blessings, and al who see him wil cal him happy.	24 Il Signore non gli ha dato la grazia, perchè è privo d'ogni sapienza.
25 Human life lasts a number of days, but the days of Israel are beyond counting.	25 E' sapiente chi è sapiente per l'anima propria, e i frutti della sua prudenza son degni di lode.
26 The wise wil earn confidence among the people, his name wil live for ever.	26 L'uomo sapiente istruisce il suo popolo, e i frutti del suo sapere sono duraturi.
27 During your life, my child, see what suits your constitution, do not give it what you find disagrees withit;	27 L'uomo sapiente sarà ricolmo di benedizioni, e chiunque lo vede gli darà lode.
28 for not everything is good for everybody, nor does everybody like everything.	28 La vita dell'uomo ha i giorni contati, ma i giorni d'Israele sono senza numero.
29 Do not be insatiable for any delicacy, do not be greedy for food,	29 Il sapiente acquisterà onore in mezzo al popolo, e il suo nome vivrà in eterno.
30 for over-eating leads to illness and excess leads to liver-attacks.	30 Figlio, nel tuo vitto metti a prova te stesso, se una cosa è nociva, non le dar potere su di te,
31 Many people have died from over-eating; control yourself, and so prolong your life.	31 perchè non tutto giova a tutti, e non a tutte le persone piace ogni cosa.
	32 Guardati dall'avidità nei banchetti e non ti gettare sopra tutte le vivande.
	33 Perchè dal molto mangiare verranno le malattie, e l'avidità conduce al la colica.
	34 Molti son morti per l'intemperanza; chi è sobrio prolungherà la sua vita.
