Sirach 37

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Any friend wil say, 'I am your friend too,' but some friends are friends only in name.	1 Ogni amico dice: «Anch’io sono amico», ma c’è chi è amico solo di nome.
2 Is it not a deadly sorrow when a comrade or a friend turns enemy?	2 Non è forse un dolore mortale un compagno e amico che diventa nemico?
3 O evil inclination, why were you created, to cover the earth with deceit?	3 O inclinazione al male, come ti sei insinuata per ricoprire la terra di inganni?
4 One kind of comrade congratulates a friend in prosperity but in time of trouble appears on the otherside.	4 C’è chi si rallegra con l’amico quando tutto va bene, ma al momento della tribolazione gli è ostile.
5 One kind of comrade genuinely feels for a friend and when it comes to a fight, springs to arms.	5 C’è chi si affligge con l’amico per amore del proprio ventre, ma di fronte alla battaglia prende lo scudo.
6 Do not forget the genuine friend, do not push him out of mind once you are rich.	6 Non dimenticarti dell’amico nell’animo tuo, non scordarti di lui nella tua prosperità.
7 Any adviser wil offer advice, but some are governed by self-interest.	7 Ogni consigliere esalta il consiglio che dà, ma c’è chi consiglia a proprio vantaggio.
8 Beware of someone who offers advice; first find out what he wants himself- since his advice coincideswith his own interest -- in case he has designs on you	8 Guàrdati da chi vuole darti consiglio e prima infórmati quali siano le sue necessità: egli infatti darà consigli a suo vantaggio; perché non abbia a gettare un laccio su di te
9 and tel s you, 'You are on the right road,' but stands wel clear to see what will happen to you.	9 e ti dica: «La tua via è buona», ma poi si tenga in disparte per vedere quel che ti succede.
10 Do not consult anyone who looks at you askance, conceal your plans from people jealous of you.	10 Non consigliarti con chi ti guarda di sbieco e nascondi le tue intenzioni a quanti ti invidiano.
11 Do not consult a woman about her rival, or a coward about war, a merchant about prices, or a buyerabout sel ing, anyone mean about gratitude, or anyone selfish about kindness, a lazy fel ow about any sort ofwork, or a casual worker about finishing a job, an idle servant about a major undertaking -- do not rely on thesefor any advice.	11 Non consigliarti con una donna sulla sua rivale e con un pauroso sulla guerra, con un mercante sul commercio e con un compratore sulla vendita, con un invidioso sulla riconoscenza e con uno spietato sulla bontà di cuore, con un pigro su una iniziativa qualsiasi e con un salariato sul raccolto, con uno schiavo pigro su un lavoro importante. Non dipendere da costoro per nessun consiglio.
12 But have constant recourse to some devout person, whom you know to be a keeper of thecommandments, whose soul matches your own, and who, if you go wrong, wil be sympathetic.	12 Frequenta invece un uomo giusto, di cui sai che osserva i comandamenti e ha un animo simile al tuo, perché se tu cadi, egli saprà compatirti.
13 Finally, stick to the advice your own heart gives you, no one can be truer to you than that;	13 Attieniti al consiglio del tuo cuore, perché nessuno ti è più fedele.
14 since a person's soul often gives a clearer warning than seven watchmen perched on a watchtower.	14 Infatti la coscienza di un uomo talvolta suole avvertire meglio di sette sentinelle collocate in alto per spiare.
15 And besides all this beg the Most High to guide your steps into the truth.	15 Per tutte queste cose invoca l’Altissimo, perché guidi la tua via secondo verità.
16 Reason should be the basis for every activity, reflection must come before any undertaking.	16 Principio di ogni opera è la parola, prima di ogni azione c’è la riflessione.
17 Thoughts are rooted in the heart, and this sends out four branches:	17 Radice di ogni mutamento è il cuore,
18 good and evil, life and death, and mistress of them always is the tongue.	18 da cui derivano quattro scelte: bene e male, vita e morte, ma su tutto domina sempre la lingua.
19 One kind of person is clever at teaching others, yet is no good whatever to himself;	19 C’è l’esperto che insegna a molti, ma è inutile a se stesso.
20 another, very eloquent, is detested and ends by starving to death,	20 C’è chi posa a saggio nei discorsi ed è odioso, e finisce col mancare di ogni cibo;
21 not having won the favour of the Lord, and being destitute of al wisdom.	21 il Signore non gli ha concesso alcun favore, perché è privo di ogni sapienza.
22 Another considers himself wise and proclaims his intel ectual conclusions as certainties.	22 C’è chi è saggio solo per se stesso e i frutti della sua intelligenza si notano sul suo corpo.
23 But the truly wise instructs his people and his intel ectual conclusions are certainties.	23 Un uomo saggio istruisce il suo popolo, i frutti della sua intelligenza sono degni di fede.
24 The wise is showered with blessings, and al who see him wil cal him happy.	24 Un uomo saggio è colmato di benedizioni, tutti quelli che lo vedono lo proclamano beato.
25 Human life lasts a number of days, but the days of Israel are beyond counting.	25 La vita dell’uomo ha i giorni contati, ma i giorni d’Israele sono senza numero.
26 The wise wil earn confidence among the people, his name wil live for ever.	26 Il saggio ottiene fiducia tra il suo popolo, e il suo nome vivrà per sempre.
27 During your life, my child, see what suits your constitution, do not give it what you find disagrees withit;	27 Figlio, per tutta la tua vita esamina te stesso, vedi quello che ti nuoce e non concedertelo.
28 for not everything is good for everybody, nor does everybody like everything.	28 Difatti non tutto conviene a tutti e non tutti approvano ogni cosa.
29 Do not be insatiable for any delicacy, do not be greedy for food,	29 Non essere ingordo per qualsiasi ghiottoneria e non ti gettare sulle vivande,
30 for over-eating leads to illness and excess leads to liver-attacks.	30 perché l’abuso dei cibi causa malattie e l’ingordigia provoca le coliche.
31 Many people have died from over-eating; control yourself, and so prolong your life.	31 Molti sono morti per ingordigia, chi invece si controlla vivrà a lungo.
