NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Any friend wil say, 'I am your friend too,' but some friends are friends only in name.	1 Tous tes amis diront: “Moi aussi, je t’aime bien”, mais l’ami peut ne l’être que de nom.
2 Is it not a deadly sorrow when a comrade or a friend turns enemy?	2 N’est-ce pas tristesse mortelle quand un compagnon ou un ami se change en ennemi?
3 O evil inclination, why were you created, to cover the earth with deceit?	3 Ô mauvais désirs, d’où êtes-vous sortis pour couvrir la terre de tromperies?
4 One kind of comrade congratulates a friend in prosperity but in time of trouble appears on the otherside.	4 Voyez ce compagnon qui profite de la bonne fortune de son ami: que vienne le malheur, il se tourne contre lui.
5 One kind of comrade genuinely feels for a friend and when it comes to a fight, springs to arms.	5 Voyez ce compagnon qui souffre pour son ami tant qu’il y a profit pour son ventre: que vienne le danger, il ne pense qu’à se mettre à l’abri.
6 Do not forget the genuine friend, do not push him out of mind once you are rich.	6 Que ton cœur n’oublie pas ton ami, ne le laisse pas tomber si tu deviens riche.
7 Any adviser wil offer advice, but some are governed by self-interest.	7 Tout conseiller fait valoir son avis, mais plus d’un conseille dans son propre intérêt.
8 Beware of someone who offers advice; first find out what he wants himself- since his advice coincideswith his own interest -- in case he has designs on you	8 Fais attention à qui te conseille: demande-toi d’abord de quoi il a besoin, car il parlera selon son intérêt. Peut-être cherche-t-il à te rouler.
9 and tel s you, 'You are on the right road,' but stands wel clear to see what will happen to you.	9 “Ta décision est bonne” dira-t-il, puis il suivra l’affaire pour voir ce qui t’arrive.
10 Do not consult anyone who looks at you askance, conceal your plans from people jealous of you.	10 Ne consulte pas celui qui n’a pas confiance en toi, cache tes intentions à ceux qui sont jaloux de toi.
11 Do not consult a woman about her rival, or a coward about war, a merchant about prices, or a buyerabout sel ing, anyone mean about gratitude, or anyone selfish about kindness, a lazy fel ow about any sort ofwork, or a casual worker about finishing a job, an idle servant about a major undertaking -- do not rely on thesefor any advice.	11 Ne consulte jamais une femme sur sa rivale, un lâche à propos de la guerre, un négociant pour un taux d’échange, un acheteur si tu vends, un jaloux s’il s’agit de reconnaissance, un égoïste s’il s’agit de bienfaisance, un paresseux pour quelque chose à faire, un ouvrier à la journée pour la fin du travail, un domestique fainéant pour une grosse besogne.
12 But have constant recourse to some devout person, whom you know to be a keeper of thecommandments, whose soul matches your own, and who, if you go wrong, wil be sympathetic.	12 Mais cherche la compagnie d’un vrai croyant que tu sais respectueux des commandements, dont l’âme est proche de la tienne, et qui partagera ta souffrance si tu échoues.
13 Finally, stick to the advice your own heart gives you, no one can be truer to you than that;	13 Puis tiens-toi fermement à la décision qui naîtra de toi, car personne ne mérite davantage ta confiance.
14 since a person's soul often gives a clearer warning than seven watchmen perched on a watchtower.	14 Notre propre intuition voit parfois plus clair que les sept sentinelles qui veillent sur la hauteur.
15 And besides all this beg the Most High to guide your steps into the truth.	15 Mais par-dessus tout prie le Très-Haut pour qu’il te mette dans le vrai..
16 Reason should be the basis for every activity, reflection must come before any undertaking.	16 Avant d’entreprendre, il faut penser; avant toute action il y a un projet.
17 Thoughts are rooted in the heart, and this sends out four branches:	17 La décision peut s’orienter suivant quatre chemins:
18 good and evil, life and death, and mistress of them always is the tongue.	18 le bien ou le mal, la vie ou la mort. C’est ta décision qui fait le choix.
19 One kind of person is clever at teaching others, yet is no good whatever to himself;	19 Tel homme est bon pour instruire les autres, qui pour lui-même ne vaut rien.
20 another, very eloquent, is detested and ends by starving to death,	20 Le beau parleur se fait détester: on le laissera mourir de faim.
21 not having won the favour of the Lord, and being destitute of al wisdom.	21 Il n’a pas reçu la grâce qui vient du Seigneur: il est dépourvu de sagesse.
22 Another considers himself wise and proclaims his intel ectual conclusions as certainties.	22 Mais d’autres ont en eux la sagesse; on peut leur faire confiance quand ils déversent les fruits de leur intelligence.
23 But the truly wise instructs his people and his intel ectual conclusions are certainties.	23 L’homme sage instruit son propre peuple: on peut se fier aux fruits de son intelligence.
24 The wise is showered with blessings, and al who see him wil cal him happy.	24 L’homme sage est comblé de bénédictions, tous ceux qui le voient disent ses louanges.
25 Human life lasts a number of days, but the days of Israel are beyond counting.	25 Chacun ne vit qu’un certain nombre de jours, mais les jours d’Israël passeront toute mesure.
26 The wise wil earn confidence among the people, his name wil live for ever.	26 Le sage jouira de la confiance de son peuple, son nom vivra à jamais.
27 During your life, my child, see what suits your constitution, do not give it what you find disagrees withit;	27 Mon enfant, vois toi-même ce qui te réussit: vois ce qui est mauvais pour toi et sache t’en priver.
28 for not everything is good for everybody, nor does everybody like everything.	28 Car tout ne convient pas à tous, et tout le monde ne s’accommode pas des mêmes choses.
29 Do not be insatiable for any delicacy, do not be greedy for food,	29 N’abuse pas de tout ce qui te plaît, ne te jette pas sur la nourriture,
30 for over-eating leads to illness and excess leads to liver-attacks.	30 car trop manger rend malade, et la goinfrerie provoque l’indigestion.
31 Many people have died from over-eating; control yourself, and so prolong your life.	31 Beaucoup de gens sont morts de leurs excès, alors qu’en se modérant ils auraient prolongé leur vie.
