Sirach 30

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.	1 Chi ama il suo figliolo lo castiga sovente per averne in futuro consolazione e perchè egli non abbia a picchiare alle porte dei vicini.
2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.	2 Chi istruisce il suo figliolo ne avrà lode e se ne glorierà in mezzo alla gente di sua famiglia.
3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.	3 Chi istruisce il suo figliolo muoverà ad invidia il nemico, e si glorierà di lui coi suoi amici.
4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.	4 Se suo padre muore, sarà come non fosse morto, perchè lascia dietro di sè uno simile a lui.
5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.	5 Lo vide in vita e ne ebbe consolazione, nella sua morte non ebbe tristezza, e non restò confuso dinanzi ai nemici.
6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.	6 Egli ha lasciato per i nemici un difensore della casa, e per gli amici chi saprà essere grato.
7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.	7 Chi accarezza il figlio ne dovrà fasciar le piaghe, e ad ogni grido sentirà straziarsi le viscere.
8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.	8 Il cavallo non domato diventa intrattabile, e il figlio abbandonato a se stesso diventa un rompicollo.
9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.	9 Fa' moine al figliolo e ti darà angosce, scherza con lui e ti farà triste.
10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.	10 Non ridere con lui, per non avere a piangere, per non avere da ultimo allegati i denti.
11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.	11 Non lo lasciar fare a modo suo nella gioventù, e non chiuder gli occhi davanti ai suoi capricci.
12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.	12 Fagli piegare il collo in gioventù, battigli i fianchi mentre è ancora fanciullo, in modo che non diventi caparbio e di subbidiente, con gran dolore dell'anima tua.
13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.	13 Istruisci il tuo figliolo e affaticati intorno a lui, per non cadere nella sua vergogna.
14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.	14 Val più un povero sano e robusto, che un ricco debole e finito dalle malattie.
15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.	15 La sanità dell'anima che consiste nella santità della giustizia, vai più dell'oro e dell'argento e un corpo robusto vai più d'immense ricchezze.
16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.	16 Non c'è ricchezza maggiore della sanità del corpo, nè piacere maggiore della gioia del cuore.
17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.	17 E' preferibile la morte ad una vita amara, e l'eterno riposo alla sofferenza continua.
18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.	18 Beni riposti in bocca chiusa sono come apparecchiate vivande poste in torno ad un sepolcro.
19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?	19 Che giovano le libazioni all'idolo? Non può nè mangiare, nè sentire l'odore.
20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!	20 Così avviene a chi è perseguitato dal Signore e porta la mercede della sua iniquità.
21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.	21 Vedendo cogli occhi geme, e sospira come un eunuco che abbraccia una vergine.
22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.	22 Non t'abbandonare alla tristezza, e non t'affliggere coi tuoi pensieri.
23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.	23 La giocondità del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, è un tesoro inesauribile di sanità, l'allegrezza dell'uomo dà la lunga vita.
24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.	24 Abbi pietà della tua anima, per piacere a Dio sii continente, raccogli il tuo cuore nella santità di Dio e caccia lungi da te la tristezza.
25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.	25 Perchè la tristezza ne ha fatti morir molti, e non serve a nulla.
	26 L'invidia e l'ira abbreviano la vita, e i pensieri fan diventar vecchi avanti tempo.
	27 Il cuore sereno e buono è in banchetti e i suoi banchetti son preparati con diligenza.
