Sirach 30

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.	1 Chi ama suo figlio usa spesso la sferza, perché ne gioisca quando è grande.
2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.	2 Chi disciplina suo figlio avrà poi gioia, ne sarà fiero in mezzo ai conoscenti.
3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.	3 Chi istruisce suo figlio fa ingelosire il nemico, di lui sarà lieto di fronte agli amici.
4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.	4 Suo padre è spirato, ma non è morto, ha lasciato dietro a sé uno che gli somiglia.
5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.	5 In vita, lo ha visto e se n'è rallegrato, quando muore, non deve rammaricarsi.
6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.	6 Per i nemici, ha lasciato chi lo vendica, per gli amici, chi ricambia i favori.
7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.	7 Chi vezzeggia il figlio ne fascerà le ferite, ad ogni grido, le sue viscere tremeranno.
8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.	8 Un cavallo senza freno diventa ostinato, un figlio troppo libero diventa testardo.
9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.	9 Còccola tuo figlio e ti darà brutte sorprese, gioca con lui e ti farà soffrire.
10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.	10 Con lui non ridere, per non dover piangere e battere i denti quando è grande.
11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.	11 Non dargli libertà quando è giovane, e non sorvolare sui suoi errori.
12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.	12 Fagli piegare il collo in gioventù, batti i suoi fianchi quando è ragazzo, perché non diventi caparbio e ti disobbedisca e non abbia da lui dispiaceri.
13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.	13 Disciplina tuo figlio e òccupati di lui, perché tu non inciampi per la sua depravazione.
14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.	14 Meglio il povero sano e forte nel corpo che il ricco tribolato nella salute.
15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.	15 Sanità e vigore son meglio di tutto l'oro, una buona salute val più che smisurata ricchezza.
16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.	16 Non c'è miglior ricchezza che la salute del corpo, né migliore allegrezza che la gioia del cuore.
17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.	17 E' meglio la morte che una vita amara, il riposo eterno che una malattia cronica.
18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.	18 Vivande versate sulla bocca chiusa son come cibi posti sopra il sepolcro.
19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?	19 Che giova all'idolo un'offerta di frutta? Non può mangiarla né odorarla, così è chi è perseguitato dal Signore.
20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!	20 Egli guarda con gli occhi e geme, come geme l'eunuco che abbraccia una vergine.
21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.	21 Non darti in balìa della tristezza e non affliggerti con la riflessione.
22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.	22 La gioia del cuore è vita per l'uomo, la contentezza gli moltiplica i giorni.
23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.	23 Distrai te stesso e consola il tuo cuore, tieni lontano da te la tristezza, perché la tristezza ha rovinato molti, non c'è in essa utilità alcuna.
24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.	24 L'invidia e la rabbia abbreviano i giorni, la preoccupazione porta a precoce vecchiaia.
25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.	25 Un cuore sereno ha buon appetito, gusta quanto mangia.
