Sirach 30

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.	1 De filiis. Qui diligit filium suum, assi duat illi flagella, ut laetetur in novissimo suo.
2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.	2 Qui docet filium suum, fructum habebit in illo et in medio domesticorum in illo gloriabitur.
3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.	3 Qui docet filium suum, in zelum mittet inimicum et in medio amicorum gloriabitur in illo.
4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.	4 Mortuus est pater eius et quasi non est mortuus: similem enim reliquit sibi post se.
5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.	5 In vita sua vidit et laetatus est in illo, in obitu suo non est contristatus. Nec confusus est coram inimicis:
6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.	6 reliquit enim defensorem domus contra inimicos et amicis reddentem gratiam.
7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.	7 Qui blanditur filio, colligabit vulnera eius, et super omnem vocem turbabuntur viscera sua.
8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.	8 Equus indomitus evadit durus, et filius remissus evadet praeceps.
9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.	9 Lacta filium, et paventem te faciet; lude cum eo, et contristabit te.
10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.	10 Non corrideas illi, ne doleas, et in novissimo obstupescent dentes tui.
11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.	11 Non des illi potestatem in iuventute et ne despicias errata illius.
12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.	12 Curva cervicem eius in iuventute et tunde latera eius, dum infans est, ne forte induret et non credat tibi, et erit tibi ab illo dolor animae.
13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.	13 Doce filium tuum et operare in illo, ne in turpitudinem illius offendas.
14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.	14 Melior est pauper sanus et fortis viribus quam dives imbecillis et flagellatus in carne sua.
15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.	15 Salus carnis melior est omni auro et argento, et spiritus validus quam census immensus.
16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.	16 Non est census super censum salutis corporis, et non est oblectatio super cordis gaudium.
17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.	17 Melior est mors quam vita amara, et requies aeterna quam languor perseverans.
18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.	18 Bona effusa in ore clauso quasi appositiones epularum circumpositae sepulcro.
19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?	19 Quid proderit libatio idolo? Nec enim manducabit nec odorabitur:
20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!	20 sic qui effugatur a Domino portans mercedes iniquitatis,
21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.	21 videns oculis et ingemiscens sicut spado complectens virginem et suspirans.
22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.	22 Tristitiam non des animae tuae et non affligas temetipsum in consilio tuo.
23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.	23 Iucunditas cordis haec est vita hominis et thesaurus sine defectione sanctitatis, et exsultatio viri est longaevitas.
24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.	24 Indulge animae tuae et consolare cor tuum et tristitiam longe repelle a te.
25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.	25 Multos enim occidit tristitia, et non est utilitas in illa;
	26 zelus et iracundia minuunt dies, et ante tempus senectam adducet cogitatus.
	27 Splendidum cor et bonum in epulis est; epulae enim illius diligenter fiunt.
