Sirach 30

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.	1 Chi ama il suo figliuolo, adopra sovente con esso la sferza, affin di averne consolazione nel fine, e perché quegli non abbia a picchiare alle porte de' vicini.
2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.	2 Chi istruisce il proprio figliuolo, ne ritrarrà onore, e di lui si glorierà colla gente di sua famiglia.
3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.	3 Chi istruisce il proprio figliuolo, muoverà ad invidia il suo nemico; e si glorierà di lui co' suoi amici.
4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.	4 Il padre di lui si morì, e quasi non morì; perocché ha lasciato dopo di se uno, che lo somiglia.
5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.	5 Egli vivendo lo, vide, e ne ebbe consolazione, e nella morte sua non si attristò, e non ebbe ad arrossire in faccia de' nemici;
6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.	6 Perocché egli ha lasciato alla casa un difensore contro i nemici, ed uno, che sarà grato verso gli amici.
7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.	7 Per amor delle anime de' figliuoli ei fascerà le loro piaghe, e ad ogni voce si scuotcran le sue viscere.
8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.	8 Un cavallo non domato diventa intrattabile, e un figliuolo abbandonato a se stesso diventa pervicace.
9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.	9 Piaggia il figliuolo, e ti darà delle angosce; scherza con lui, e ti arrecherà grandi dolori.
10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.	10 Non gli ridere in bocca, affinchè tu non abbi da ultimo a piangere, e a digrignare i denti.
11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.	11 Non lo lasciar fare a modo suo nella gioventù, e non far le viste di non vedere quel, ch'egli pensa.
12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.	12 Piega a lui il collo nella giovinezza, e battigli i fianchi mentr'egli è fanciullo, affinchè non si induri, e ti nieghi ubbidienza, io che sarà dolore all'anima tua.
13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.	13 Istruisci il tuo figliuolo, e affaticati intorno a lui per non incorrere ne' suoi disonori.
14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.	14 Val più un povero sano, e robusta di forze, che un ricco spossato, e fiaccato dalle malattie.
15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.	15 La salute dell'anima consistente nella santità della giustizia, vai più di tutto l'oro, e l'argento, e un corpo ben disposto più vale, che le immense ricchezze.
16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.	16 Non v'ha tesoro, che superi il tesoro della sanità del corpo, né piacer maggiore, che il gaudio del cuore.
17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.	17 E preferibile la morte alla vita amara, e il riposo eterno agli ostinati languori.
18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.	18 I beni riposti per uno, che ha chiusa la bocca, sono come le molte vivande disposte attorno ad un sepolcro,
19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?	19 Che giovano all'idolo le libagioni. Perocché egli non mangerà, e non sentirà, odore:
20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!	20 Cosi succede a chi è perseguitato dal Signore, e porta la mercede di sua iniquità:
21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.	21 Vede cogli occhi suoi, e geme com'un eunuco, che abbraccia una vergine, e da un sospiro.
22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.	22 Non lasciar l'anima tua in preda alla tristezza, e non affligger te stesso co' tuoi pensieri.
23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.	23 La giocondità del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, e tesoro inesausto di santità; e la letizia allunga i giorni dell'uomo.
24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.	24 Abbi compassione dell'anima tua per piacere a Dio, e sii continente, e riunisci il cuor tuo nella santità, e manda lungi da te la tristezza.
25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.	25 Perocché la tristezza ne ha uccisi molti, ed ella non è buona a nulla.
	26 L'invidia, e l'ira abbreviano i giorni, e i sopraccapi menano la vecchiaia prima del tempo.
	27 Un cuore ilare, e benigno è in banchetti, e i suoi banchetti son preparati con diligenza.
